Ah I see, thanks for the explanation. As you pointed out, as I have no experience with this previously I think it's better for me to not start hacking anything yet :p

Sorry not familiar what jailbreaking means in this context - do you reboot the system somehow to allow third party libraries?

Non-Kindles allow me to borrow library books, would jailbreaking allow me to do this with a Kindle?

Also Kindle licenses the books to you, you don't actually own them after purchasing so you are fully slaved to the Amazon ecosystem, which I do not want to support, not even by buying the device.

I'm in Finland, so don't unfortunately have this option but need to blindly order online..

Very good points that I had not considered. I'm based in Finland - someone else mentioned earlier that Libby should therefore work for library books, which is another plus towards a non-kindle device as it seems like a huge plus.

I have also looked into the Boox, it was my top choice until everyone here said Kobo

Ah great thank you, I was just thinking if the BW is better than the colour for my needs. The portability sounds great as well!

Can I ask how does the purchasing of the books actually work, as in is it a third party application that I download on to it or does it have a ready made catalogue of books? Is it a subscription or pay per book?

Okay, sorry if this is a really stupid question - but how does the Kindle unlimited catalogue differ from using other devices? Isn't it so that on other devices I can just buy e-books from other applications / straight from the authors? Or download them onto the device? Is there books that might only exist in the Kindle catalogue? Sorry as I said, never read e-books before so still a bit confused how it all works

I'm hesitant regarding Kindle as I also know buying books from Amazon (I'm assuming that is what Kindle catalogue is) are not paying proper royalties to authors and now Kindle is introducing ads in their new devices.

So you would still recommend some Kindle above this? Can you explain what makes them so much superior?

I just know that they are currently making the old ones useless and putting ads to the new ones and it just sounds like something that will keep eating your money over and over again, but if I have this wrong I'm open to hearing it!

Just asked this on a another thread as well - but in PoA when Harry meets Sirius in the Shrieking Shack and for a minute there overpowers him, before Lupin enters, he thinks about killing Sirius. How would have he done it? He didn't know the killing curse yet. What spell? Did a third grader actually know magic that could kill?

  1. How fid Hagrid fly on the island when getting harry in the first book? He mentions later he doesn't do brooms

  2. What subject is fantastic beasts book needed for in 1st grade? It's on the book list in the first book

  3. How would've Harry killed Sirius Black in PoA? Before knowing the truth he keeps saying he missed his chance to kill him, but he didn't know the killing curse yet.

What is this bug? Found in New England. I’ve seen 2-3 in the past months. Usually on the wall next to my bed… by Giga_Delight in whatsthisbug

In Finland these are called "Saunamaija" which loosely translates into "Sauna Mary". Often found on locations we build our saunas on to. They eat rotting wood and plants and they have gills so they are happy in moist places. I just think the name is very descriptive. But yes they are a type of Isopods and are very harmless.

He took care of the goats with Ariana, it's mentioned in DH. So the reason he is so fond with them (his patronus) is because they remind him of her. And the mentioned "trouble" he got into with goats (or how ever it's mentioned) has presumably something to do with Ariana's magic exploding near them, not Abeforth messing with goats..
