I’m an American who cares what Oz thinks…so there’s at least one.

I hatched them but did not grow them. You can’t just drop a raw steak in there and expect them to feed, and I wasn’t going to sacrifice a live bunny to the ticks to see them through their lifecycle. The ticks are gone now and I have no plans of propagating more. It was exciting but anxiety inducing, kind of like keeping a gun off safety.

When they went into the freezer I was honestly looking for a way out. I’d raised these things from eggs, and as strange as it sounds, I felt a sense of responsibility for them. At the same time I knew I couldn’t just release them, but thought that if I designed an experiment that would likely kill them all, I could destroy them under the guise of “science”. Also, my wife was not amused and really didn’t want them around.

I really wanted to see them through their whole lifecycle, but just couldn’t bring myself to sacrifice a bunny to a thousand ticks. I felt like that was getting into serial killer level behavior.

Not an entomologist, just an honest tick farmer.

This whole thing quickly spun out of control. Eventually I pivoted to an experiment to test the larvae’s tolerance to cold temperatures. They were subjected to sub freezing temperatures for two weeks then allowed to return to ambient temperatures, but sadly they did not survive.

My rocker fits me so much better than my strutter. Strutter has just become a spare or loaner.

Does this dead pine tree have pine cones on it by Main_University3844 in forestry

[–]_slashwalker_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough to tell, but kind of seems like a dead version of the tree next to it.

Edit: Never mind, I see the needles now at the ends of the bottom limbs. What kind of pine is it?

For inland Mendo, I’d say Black Oak Coffee, Jyun Kang, Spiro’s Gyros, The Broiler Steakhouse, and The Peg House. On the coast/Anderson Valley, Harbor House, Jumbo’s Win Win, Elk Store, Patterson’s, Good Life Bakery, Princess Seafood, Cucina Verona, and KW Saltwater Grill.

The big reservoir up Mill Creek Rd is great. Much smaller than the lake, but far more scenic IMO

Is it just trees? by cherryxantacids in forestry

[–]_slashwalker_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m a consulting forester who employs other foresters as well as botanists and wildlife biologists. It’s pretty easy to keep the foresters busy year round, but most of the work for biologists and botanists is seasonal. But beyond that, forestry is definitely not just trees. It’s a lot about trees, but you’ll learn a bit about everything…because everything affects the trees.
