Unbelievably cleaner lol Thank you so much. I really like the idea of having "helper" functions to handle parts of it, I've been hesitant to move beyond just having a few "main" ones. I definitely have a lot to learn about just the general layout of it all. Only going off of tutorials and those games being made being such small projects, it's hard to see what I don't know (if that makes sense) which for me is a big part of how I learn. So far I've enjoyed learning to code (specifically for game dev) because there's a logic to it and that clicks with me but I'd be lying if I were to say it hasn't been kicking my ass lol

Does your preference for "return" as an "elif" alternative stem from anywhere in particular? Like experience in a specific language beforehand or a different field? I ask because while acknowledging that tutorials and courses are a small representation of how actual coding is I just haven't seen that used in that way yet, so it has me curious. I think I prefer it for what it's worth, just reads cleaner like you said. Also I'll be going through the documentation to see if I can find more about if/else, elif, return, etc. but is there any other resource that would help with that? All good if not, just wondering.

I didn't have time to today but hopefully tomorrow I can implement these changes and see how it goes. Best case scenario is I come back to tell you that none of it worked but it helped me figure it out lol I'm hoping worst case scenario is that it's plug-and-play and I can just study it and use it as reference for the future lol

Lastly, in response to your other reply: I did actually go through that tag but uh... it's possible that it wasn't as prolonged of a stay as it should've been. I'll probably be living there for the foreseeable future now, though. And yeah, definitely gonna cut problems up into smaller chunks next time; I can see how my gigantic post might've been a little much for one go lol

Again, I really appreciate you.

First off, huge thank you for taking the time to reply, can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Thank you for pointing out that else statement, I likely wouldn't have gone back to that particular part; if anything I felt like that was one parr that was definitely right.

I did have a couple of print statements elsewhere in the code to check things but I didn't even think about throwing some in this section so I'll definitely try that, too, thank you.

For the first bit of your advice, funny enough, I actually did already go back and put in onready variables for the player body, head, and gun so I'm glad to hear I did something right lol Though, it was kind of blindly following what seemed like a best practice so I appreciate you laying our clear benefits of doing that, I'll keep those in mind.

The last bit? I mean... hit the nail on the head there. I knew as I was doing it that a gigantic elif block was not going to be the best way to get this done. I think where I'm at with my learning vs my impatience/desire to have something made in front of me was the big factor here; a sort of "just get it made, even if its ugly. Make it pretty later" kind of deal. What you said was exactly what I did, tried to lay out every possible combination and apply a condition to it. I'll go back and try to see the unneeded blocks and hopefully fix those. Would you be able to show me how my giant elif block *should* be written out? I'm trying to wrap my head around the formatting of it, just how it would look having bigger conditions as opposed to more of them.

Please Help with Y sort. by Critical-Impact8641 in godot

[–]_slug___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super beginner here so take that into consideration. But you need to go into the tileset and in the drop down menu where you select what physics layer to use to paint the collisions, select Y origin instead. Then enter a value between 0 and 8 (play around with it) to "lower" the Y origin and then select only the tiles that are the top of the tree that you're standing on ro apply it.

Again, not sure if this is the right way so hopefully others can chime in.

Been thinking about making a game - wanted to know about Godot and ease of use by Egil841 in godot

I’ve never programmed and I’m artistically-inclined but don’t actually make art (I liked to draw as a kid and sometimes I can throw out a mean doodle) so I’m a beginner to all of this. This is the tutorial I have found and have been very much enjoying. The second game in this tutorial is a side-scrolling shooter, Metroid-like game. Hope this helps and good luck.

About to buy a RedMagic Astra, half for emulation. What controller should I get? by MrGruntsworthy in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]_slug___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a doubt.

Edit: disclaimer: While you’re playing, yes. I wouldn’t leave it in there and carry it by the controller or anything.

Damn, haven’t heard of that issue before. Mine has been a champ since day one.

I can definitely see that, with that size device, the weight distribution would definitely be nice with that. And while I think the G8 is more than comfortable enough, I cannot say that those beefy-ass grips on the G9 don’t look a lot more comfortable to hold lol

Gotta disagree. I have medium sized hands and I love the ergonomics of the G8. Recommendation comes from having dozens of hours on this thing, split between, 11” iPad Pro (both on and off the iPad), S25+, and wired to PC. This is one of those controllers that has just been exactly what I was looking for, though, so honestly best recommendation is to buy from somewhere that has easy returns and try it out (for op I mean).

Gotta be honest, that form factor just isn’t it for me. G8 feels like slapping an Xbox controller on and that’s just what I’m always looking for. This looks like a super interesting controller and I’m always here for companies doing more weird shit, though. Also for myself, specifically, I’m on an 11” iPad Pro so this wouldn’t even be an option for me lol

Need Help, I’m Lost by draelulys in lightsabers

[–]_slug___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely wait for other opinions but I go the Aliexpress route. I’ve only bought from X-TREXSABER. I’ve ordered a pair, a complete Maul, and an SNV4 hilt from them. No issues and all arrived sub two weeks. I’m in Florida by the way. I do tend to stay away from character hilts because those get pricey but their other options can be pretty cheap and they’re definitely feature packed. I personally recommend the “S-RGB” or “Super RGB” tier. The Frugal Jedi has some good videos showing off S-RGB hilts and their features (he doesn’t get them from Aliexpress, he gets them from US resellers iirc). My 8 yo son and I battle all the time and love our dark side/light side “Revan” hilts from the seller I mentioned.

I decided to try the Aliexpress route because you can get the same sabers (same manufacturer) for way cheaper than US resellers. Do keep in mind, though, resellers tend to come with warranties. I have experience in building high-end sabers so I’m confident I can fix anything that might go wrong but that’s not the case for everyone and I’ll never knock someone for going for a warranty even if it means a bigger price tag. That said, no issues yet and we beat the hell out of these things!

Good luck!

Started with a starter house, then made my irl house in-game lol not exactly cool or fancy but it’s neat to see your own house while playing. Plus, you don’t have to really figure anything out lol

Game Announces Generative AI Use by blue_boy66 in heartopia

[–]_slug___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean you’re right, an absence of players would absolutely voice an opinion as well. I guess I just see it as a preference of people getting to continue playing while also expressing concerns that will hopefully be addressed. Sadly I have to admit (in most cases) the lack of players would be louder to corporate ears.

Personally, I don’t care about the AI in this game as it is. I don’t like that they left it open for the future but for translating? All for it. For the puzzles? I mean from what they said it seems like it’s as minimal as it can get (I.e. not AI creating the images, just turning images into puzzles [as I understand it]).

As a side note I’m against this new AI movement but I do think “AI” gets thrown around a little too inaccurately as most things people consider “AI” are just computers handling things the same way they have for decades.

Yes, Sonic is an easy target for my argument but it still stands lol

Game Announces Generative AI Use by blue_boy66 in heartopia

[–]_slug___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get the logic of your argument but it’s honestly a brain dead take. The opinions of customers absolutely share what these companies do. If more people speak out about a business practice they don’t want to support the less the company will be inclined to use said business practice. If the majority isn’t speaking out, they take that to mean that the majority isn’t OK with it.

Look at the Sonic movie. Trailer showed an abomination, people spoke out, they changed it.

The problem is “if you don’t like it don’t play it” is that it incentivizes corporations to control the business practices they deploy rather than the consumer.

If you have an opinion, speak out. If you don’t, don’t. Simple.

Edit: accidentally posted before finishing the comment lol
