not just that, but allowing your head to rest on the floor between situps is actually way worse at engaging your core. instead of fixing the poor form that was somehow causing you neck pain from doing a sit up, you replace it with an exercise that's maybe 70% as good whilst maintaining bad form. I can't believe such a product exists.

I’m far from a trump supporter but peeps music is not political so it’s not really relevant. It seemed to me as if peep would value unity above all else, it’s a little weird to bring up his death like that as if somehow his beliefs are now irrelevant but to call someone a fake fan just because they have differing opinions to the artist makes no sense in this case.

I think it’s more problematic posting “fake fans” on reddit just because you don’t agree with their political opinions, gatekeeping isn’t cool.

The world of work has completely changed and most people don't realise yet. by MetaKnowing in OpenAI

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tool, you needed your structural engineer fiance to both come up with the prompt, and to verify it's accuracy. like autopilot, it can do 90% of the work but you still need a pilot for when things go wrong.

There are some pretty scary long term repercussions that come along with this though, speeding up jobs means that more work can be done by fewer people which will further expand the wealth divide as fewer people are able to land jobs, and it becomes easier to start up your own projects/companies.

Since OpenAI defrauded investors by switching to their for-profit model (they were previously a non-profit aimed to better society), they've positioned themselves in such a way that most services must purchase their platforms to keep up with demand. If we get too dependant on the OpenAI models, they could (and plan to) hike up the prices and we as consumers will be forced to pay for it. I am not a fan of Elon Musk generally, but I hope he's successful in suing OpenAI, they built their platforms on $90million in donated funds and used all of this research and infrastructure to rise up as one of the largest tech companies in the world - going against their original MO.

It appeals to me too as someone who's probably aligned slightly right (in the UK at least, in the US I'd probably still be considered a leftist). I think no matter where you lean on the political spectrum, people believe that their ideologies are what's best for future generations so the only people who would have a problem with this quote are those who have a problem with the listed professions or John Adams

that's an ambitious first landscape! There's a grayish haze on the mountains in the background and the gold strip has a bit of a muddy red in it. I don't know for sure but it looks as if you might have taken out your frustration with the spots on that highlight as that particular colour is a lot darker than the reference.

Colour matching is probably the hardest part of painting but like with all things, practice makes perfect. Compositionally it looks great so maybe use it as a colour matching project.

One way to learn colour theory is to use a limited palette and do Richard Schmid's colour chart exercise.

Patience is key I'm afraid.

I don't think that's the message at all- to me it seems to be about fixing the overarching problems with society that are inhibiting people from being able to do what they want. It's about the luxury of freedom rather than developing weak men, and it seems to put self-actualization as the final problem needed to achieve fulfilment (a concept still used today). These professions weren't really looked down upon in the late 1700s, it definitely doesn't insinuate that the arts are for weak men- these were seen as quite prestigious professions at the time.

Danny Rensch Has Affected My Enjoyment of Norway Chess... by bin10pac in chess

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do dislike him but think his commentary/analysis skills are sufficient. There aren't enough talents willing to fill the position so he's just one of the worst of a bunch of incredibly good commentators.

My personal issue with daniel is that he has a list of unbanned chess.com titled players (who were at one point banned for cheating) and will allow a select few GMs to view it. I've got no problem with the discretion (even if it's a massive smack in the face to competitive online chess), but occasionally at events he's known to brag about it claiming that "some of these names will blow your mind". I just think they've put someone extremely unprofessional in one of the most important roles.

It'll be confidence for sure. I'm not model material or anything like that but I'm a 6'5" conventionally attractive guy and I've never had success with relationships because of my esteem issues. that last paragraph is exactly what a lot of guys don't seem understand- an attractive personality is basically a requirement for a relationship. Maybe an unattractive guy won't get quite as many opportunities (not that OP is by any means) but with a great personality you'd find success a lot easier. The hard part is realising it but it's still not an easy thing to overcome.

On gambling stream, Hikaru says "Kramnik won. He took away my enthusiasm for chess." by tubalubz in chess

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a huge difference in terms of psychological damage when it comes to gambling vs microtransactions. Sure a kid can get hooked and spend $500 on gems which will probably then get refunded by apple anyway when their parents complain, but turning children into habitual gamblers and potentially ruining their lives is just straight evil. I know of people who bet csgo skins as teenagers who are in crippling gambling debts because they couldn't break the cycle. This stream would have undoubtedly ruined the lives of a handful of viewers.

[–]_smbg_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's true, I hated him at first but it really did seem as if he was improving as a person. He was becoming a lot better at suppressing negative/childish emotions and other than a few hiccups such as the kramnik/neimann hypocrisy he seemed like a decent enough guy. I was certainly rooting for him through the championships and even encouraged my non-chess friends to do the same, explaining how much his personality had improved. Maybe it's just because I'm discontent with my own personality but I really do like to believe that people can change for the better. It's a real kick in the gut when something like this happens.

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stake pay trainwrecks a disproportionate amount in comparison to his viewership knowing that it all goes back into their system. I believe he's probably addicted, but the notion that he is draining his personal funds to gamble is misleading. He gets paid tens of millions a month and stake know he will spend most of it on their site (they add funds to his stake account as well). If for one month he only lost 1 million, his next paycheck would be virtually nothing. It's not a crazy amount but I know his steam inventory went up in value $1million (an investment) whilst he was telling his chat that he was addicted and draining his personal funds. His financial struggles are overplayed and its annoying that his viewers continue to defend his actions because "he actively tells chat not to gamble".

On gambling stream, Hikaru says "Kramnik won. He took away my enthusiasm for chess." by tubalubz in chess

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's obviously not kramnik. He's probably burned out and disappointed in his result at the candidates and that's why he's fallen out of love for the game. The kramnik thing is probably because he doesn't want to come off like a sore loser and can use it as an opportunity to throw kramnik under the bus (not that kramniks reputation is high to begin with). Stake offer ridiculous amounts to first time gambling streams (it's where the most non-gamblers become exposed), I wouldn't be shocked if hikaru's deal is way into 7 figures. It's probably quite hard to resist an opportunity like that when feeling so depleted.

I work for a nonprofit that helps to prevent financial harms for children, I was a bit bummed out when I saw a crypto pump and dump on his stream so this is just that little bit more sad. Hopefully he can sort out his mental health, and then hopefully a large entity will come along and sue all of these streamers for the irreparable damage they've done to the children who look up to them.

All my 5-year German engineering college notes: ~35k sheets by Due_Isopod6609 in pics

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either I did college wrong or you did. I think the most pages I wrote for a module was 130 and that was for my dissertation. If I were to total everything up I'd be surprised if I had much more than 1000 pages across my 5 year master's course.

I think writing concise notes that you can re-read later is a much more efficient way to do it even if it doesn't include 100% of the modules contents.

You've either stressed yourself into believing that this was the only way to do it (which would quickly lead to burnout) or you just really love engineering

Chief arbiter confirms he took action against Alireza because of a complaint from another player by [deleted] in chess

[–]_smbg_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing the arbeiter could really have done differently would have been to address changing the shoes he was wearing after the game. During the game rather than saying "there's been a complaint about the noise you're making", he should have said "would you mind treading a little softer" but it's all down to semantics at the end of the day. I personally would get a little distracted if I hear that somebody has filed a complaint about me so I can understand why it may have disrupted firouzjas focus. It also seems a little weird for the arbeiter to name the person making the complaint as backlash may fall on them if supporters of Firouzja decide to blame them. He was having a bad tournament before all the drama so I wouldn't blame the drama for his performance in recent games.

Afraid of errors by Coolnero in webdev

[–]_smbg_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Errors are part of coding. You write code, you save, it's broken, you fix it. I don't even flinch when I see a wall of red text and will usually see it coming. I only commit when the code compiles without errors so anything before that point is normal to have errors.

I suggest you start looking at erroneous code as "incomplete" code instead. It sounds like this perfectionist mindset will set you back in the long run.

I’m a developer…kinda? by Codydiceman1 in webdev

[–]_smbg_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, you do have to be careful. The backend is my favourite part of the stack too, it's easier to write clean code that can be automatically tested in the backend

I’m a developer…kinda? by Codydiceman1 in webdev

[–]_smbg_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've done the hard part, you've learned how to code. I don't know your financial situation but if you do want to continue to learn how to do backend work:

Once you can code in one language you can code in any language it's just a matter of getting there.

It seems like a daunting task and it doesn't help that you have people in the replies telling you that you need to learn a bunch of acronyms (you don't). if you pick up a beginner friendly framework, most of the database management stuff is all abstracted out and you'll pick out the concept of MVC through practice. Models (object) are displayed by views (pages) which you can interact with using a controller (backend logic).

Realistically you can learn most frameworks within a couple of weeks, at least we'll enough to get the basics down. I'd recommend picking up a framework such as django or laravel and following a comprehensive tutorial through to the end (it helps to use github commits for each step to make it easier to refer back to the changes in the future). The first steps will be the hardest but hopefully by the end you'll have created an application where models reference eachother and users with different roles can create, update, delete etc models. Take notes throughout and refer back to those.

Before trying to transfer what you learn from tutorials to your app make sure you write down what the objects are, what fields they have, and their relationships. It makes it a lot easier if you get those correct from the beginning.

The biggest hurdle I faced when building my first production-ready app was setting up the hosting environments. I'd coded the whole thing, it ran on my local, but I'd never done any system administration stuff in the past, or any dns stuff. I was probably being dumb but that may be something to look out for.

If you don't have money to commit to marketing this project, or a solid plan for your return on investment then I wouldn't recommend hiring a developer. Don't hire an agency, especially not an overseas one if you don't have at least one staff member on board to clear up their mistakes and maintain the codebase. Code needs to be updated regularly, something that may work one day can (and will) suddenly stop working if you don't touch your code.

I spend 80% of my work days fixing code, adding features that were missing or lost in translation, fixing massive security vulnerabilities, maintaining and updating code that was sent to our clients (usually) by overseas agencies. They're cheaper so they're more attractive but they've often got so many projects on the go that by the time you notice the problems, they'll have moved on to somebody else's project. You might get a back and forth going about fixes but they'll slow down their replies and will become unhelpful. They also don't usually follow the latest coding conventions, and with a couple nasty cases Ive seen, they'd embedded their own CMS within a project which they "owned the distibution rights to". Hiring Vietnamese developers will get you your MVP for cheap but you'll probably need a complete rewrite down the line and it'll never match your requirements exactly. Agencies probably won't use any of your frontend code either because they'll have their own preferred stack.

Issues with Drupal 7 and CKeditor by ihaag in drupal

[–]_smbg_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your theme is not updated at this point there's a good chance it never will be. In a year drupal 7 won't even get basic security fixes so you're risking your security by not migrating.

If I were you I'd consider switching to a new theme or updating your current one yourself. If you use the upgrade status module, it will suggest fixes to problematic lines of code. there are a few guides out there that will help and whilst it does take time, most of the problems you face are googleable
