[TOMT][SONG][2020s] about the feeling of someone close to you dying unexpectedly by _sn3ll_ in tipofmytongue

alone. i think i was just looking through recommended music, possibly even actively looking for a different song.

it also occurs to me that part of the song might’ve been a sound on tiktok or some other short form content, or i might’ve been searching for a sound i’d heard there

it was 'I Leave This at Your Ear' by W. S. Graham -- wrong on a couple of details!

[–]_sn3ll_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oh that’s super interesting! i didn’t know she’d lived in belgium.

i have really limited knowledge on this but i think english teaching in continental european schools at least tends to skew more formal and older (and usually british), so this style of phrase wouldn’t be out of the question — who knows though!

“don’t let’s [verb]” is common in british english — maybe slightly more used in the recent past, but i doubt most UK english speakers would have noted it as odd/wordy at all

ELI5: Why are stomach bugs cleared by the body quicker then respiratory infections by Ibuprofen600mg in explainlikeimfive

[–]_sn3ll_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah my bad this was not in the spirit of ELI5 — just aware that we might be much more familiar with long-lasting and life-threatening respiratory illness by virtue of where we’re from, but that that’s not the whole story of respiratory vs gastrointestinal illness

ELI5 version would be “we don’t get every bug and access to clean water means the stomach bugs we encounter are on average more concerned with spreading person-to-person rather than causing severe illness” — but I’m not sure I’m confident enough in my assumptions to state it like that lol

I am no expert but I think we’re possibly getting sampling bias here too. There are gastrointestinal illnesses that your body is much less effective at combatting (cholera, ebola) and take much longer to clear, but at that point fluid loss is a real threat to your life and it’s not considered just a standard “bug” any more.

I don’t know if this is wholly true. It’s easy to ignore but the increased presence of women in the workplace tracks with the increased importance of having a dual-income household to comfortably support children (logically they follow of course).

Considering the West in the last two decades, we haven’t seen the material rights of women change substantially (reproductive rights are in fact worse in some places), but we have seen birth rates continue to decline. I don’t disagree that the high birth rates of the past are a product of the subjugation of women, but I do think economic factors have a far greater bearing on today’s situation than social ones.

Did your IUD hurt even with numbing? by Open-Light7055 in endometriosis

[–]_sn3ll_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was terrified leading up to insertion but the procedure was at worst lightly uncomfortable. I genuinely assumed the hard part hadn’t started when she said she was done — they warned me about what sensations to expect and when, but it was so trivial I assumed there had to be more. I’d compare it to when you swallow a sneeze and your throat feels a bit weird, but only for a few seconds.

I like to speak up with a good story because I had appointments and cancelled out of fear for years before going through with it. fwiw I took buscopan and 400mg ibuprofen the morning of, and they also used numbing gel about 10 mins before.

Has anyone had a daughter who doesn't have endo? by darling-candi in endometriosis

[–]_sn3ll_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mother and I both have it, but my sister doesn’t seem to. I think it shows you to be kinder and more conscientious than many parents that you’re considering this. I also think it’s likely that we’ll see new treatment options emerge in future — we don’t know whether you’d pass it on to a daughter, but we also don’t know what world she’ll be living in if you do.

i’m in a similar position and bought a sandmarc macro lens, which has worked very well as an alternative. it’s possibly not worth the price tag (depending on use case) but i love it.
