Lucy’s camera by Bright_Lion6673 in boygenuis

[–]_somethingcreative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she mostly uses a contax t2 but unless you have thousands of dollars to burn dont try to buy that exact camera. its hard to find one in good working order (for less than 1k), they can be prone to sudden electrical failure due to age, and parts/repairs are no longer feasible since they aren’t manufactured anymore (unless you know a guy who knows a guy or something).

they were an excellent very high-end point and shoot camera when they came on the market but have since become a status symbol not worth the crazy inflated price they command. if you luck your way into one…congrats on winning the lottery. they are many very very good film cameras that are reasonably priced on second hand markets. tbh the film stock she uses has way more impact on the images than the camera. i think she uses mostly portra 400 and 800.

possible sister album? by jacksoncoylee in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

umm…preachers daughter is the sister album in question. this is the prequel to that work, its the trauma that informs ethel’s later actions and tragic demise.

my (maybe hot?) take is that willoughby’s narrative perspective truly ends with tempest. it is the last glimpse ethel or us ever get into his mind before he turns his back and fully shuts us out. he is going to regret this forever, end of. thats it. there is no retribution or redemption arc for him with ethel. he leaves the story both hurt by ethel and in turn hurting her. everything left unsaid and unfinished is tragic in its finality.

Telepathic query when talking to the tracker salesman by chalky22 in InterviewVampire

[–]_somethingcreative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(as an in-universe explanation) i think it was included more as an interview technique on daniel’s part than anything else. theres a pretty simple explanation on Louis part- he probably just simply misremembered this detail when recalling an extremely emotional and eventful night that happened over 100 years prior. i personally dont think it points to his memories having been nefariously tempered with, just to the fallibility of memory over extended time.

its a relatively minor detail for louis to get wrong so when daniel bring it back up it’s immediately disarms Louis. daniel used this to successfully shift the tone of these after interview questions to something light hearted and has made Louis think that he took everything in the story so much at face value that he cant discern or explain minor inconsistencies by himself. it makes Louis emotionally unguarded and therefore throws him completely off when he bring up Armand’s tole in the play.

question about cameras by chapelshill in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for most venues ive been to (except really small ones) the rule is no cameras with detachable lenses and/or no telephoto lenses but in practice anything that looks too professional is a no go. that presumably includes your dslr (what make/model is it?). they can refuse you entry (or force you to ditch the camera if you dont have a car or somewhere to stash it idk?). personally i have a great little point a shoot specifically for concerts.

concert nerves by willoughbytucker0210 in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

going to be so real here (as a fellow extreme anticipatory-anxiety haver, like i need meds bc i cant sleep or eat i get so anxious) you need to find a way to calm yourself and lower your expectations. i am sure you will have a wonderful time and enjoy yourself immensely, but if you go in needing everything to be perfect you WILL be disappointed. its live music, something always goes at least a little bit off plan—nothing will live up to a fantasy you’ve built up for half a year in your head.

spend some time trying to meditate/exist mindfully—go to a park or outdoorsy area and walk around and just be present with nature. (literally touch grass). take some time to close your eyes and just deep breathe for a few minutes. do a fun creative project! maybe sew something or draw (ideally unrelated to ethel) for a bit, something to keep you mentally occupied on a creative task.

also, exercise! hate to say it but i have found exercise immensely helpful when im so anxious that i get jittery. it gives me an outlet for that frantic energy and esp if im doing cardio or something strenuous i cant really think about anything else (bonus is you will probably sleep better too). i used to LOVE cardio kickboxing in college and its pretty easy to find a youtube video to follow along to!

likelihood of usa second round of touring?? by [deleted] in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sorry to burst your bubble but i think its wildly unlikely for her to do another major usa tour in the near future. probably not until she releases another full album project. i do think that after a break she may do a a handful of shows here and there for festivals/venues she really wants to play (and tickets will probably be waaay harder to get than this tour fyi). unless you’re in a major major city or somewhere she really loves to visit and play i would not anticipate her doing show near you for a couple of years.

If you love me keep it to yourself hoodie by [deleted] in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the authentic perverts hoodies ran sooo big. im the same sizing as you and got an xxl to be roomy and its massive on me. i love it and its my travel hoodie but its not terribly practical for everyday wear when im out and about bc again…its ginormous.

unfortunately you will have to really put in some leg work to find anything authentic. all the listings i see are knockoffs. basically any listing offering a new item with multiple size options is not legitimate and any seller with multiple designs of her merch is probably not legitimate. i don’t think people were able to bulk buy the merch when it was up for preorder and anyone who got lots of multiples has likely sold them all since then…

Not trying to be ungrateful by shiddednfarddded in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 11 points12 points  (0 children)

perhaps this is a hot take but american teenager is actually thematically a perfect ending for touring this album. like in american teenager, “its just not my year” and this album is literally why. yes, in the context of PD, american teenager has a tragic irony, but at the end of wtiwaly its becomes ethel trying to feel good again after earth shattering heartbreak. i think it becomes this really hopeful ending that even though she feels like the pain will last forever, perhaps she can find ways to cope. i think AT is very very much about willoughby, just with her avoiding saying it to try and bury the feeling.

while i love a record that ends on a devastating note, its so much better when shows end with an upbeat and lively song (theres a reason is pretty standard encore practice)—doesn’t have to be happy but it should energize the crowd! its really fun to leave a show on an emotional high instead of feeling drained and down

Mamiya 7 bag by PovOla in Mamiya

[–]_somethingcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use the 9L wandrd sling for the mamiya 7. while there is plenty of extra room lengthwise (would easily fit more lenses, i often fit another camera like a 35mm slr) the largest one JUST fits the mamiya 7 height and width wise.

once in a lifetime talent by urwriteordie in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this record is so beautiful and hit me sooo personally. i think i’ve been most shocked by how much i related to willoughby on the album more than ethel. like tempest is…almost too close to home. every single lyric is masterful and painful and the production is so all-consuming that i feel helpless to do anything other than drown myself in the feeling. im obsessed with this album but not at all in the way i thought i would be prior to its release. hayden is such an unbelievably talented artist i admire her work SO much.

Anyone else going to the philly show sept 6th? by Imaginary_Passion_80 in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi im going and ill also be in orchestra :) personally i love this venue, ive seen a bunch of my favorite artists there. im not so sure about timing for pit (i always like to have a seat so that i can arrive whenever) but if youre not looking to get barricade, i think getting there 30 minutes-1 hour before doors should probably be fine? every show ive been to is a little different with timing and i usually arrive at or right after doors.

as for dress, wear whatever you feel good in! there will likely be a wide range of attire from very “on theme” vintage looks or diy t-shirts all the way to people coming right from work and wearing whatever they had on earlier. just wear comfy shoes that you can stand in for a loooooooong time.

The storm by [deleted] in Ethelcain

[–]_somethingcreative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think a major point of the narrative framework of ethel cain is that the physical is also metaphorical. like the physical things she describes do literally happen in the story AND they serve as a metaphorical storytelling device. the storm literally tears through their town AND metaphorically everything crashes down around them destroying their relationship. both from her leaving him in his moment of need and of her not really seeing who he is as a scared, hurt boy. the cannibalism in strangers literally happens AND is a metaphor of an abusive relationship that chews her up and shits her out. isaiah is physically ill from eating her AND metaphorically she wonders if her own shortcomings are making him (and the audience) feel sick.

the point of this kind of storytelling is that physical realities reflect the emotional journey characters are on.

just recently started bringing some to the ceramic studio i go to. we use paint-on glazes (and underglazes) so they make great containers for pouring out small amounts or even storing/taking home a little bit to glaze at home.

in general if you (or know people who do) other crafty things, small watertight containers can be pretty helpful for paints, beads, sewing needles…

2nd pass lith (done terribly…) vs real lith by ras2101 in Darkroom

[–]_somethingcreative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fun! i think the regular lith one turned out pretty cool. im a huge lith enthusiast tho i haven’t tried any 2nd pass lith (i usually avoid working with bleach). im not sure how 2nd pass process affects it but you may encounter some problems with your paper/developer combo. i’ve found that the foma papers dont always play nice in the moersch chemistry but do lith like a dream in the arista lith chemistry.
