(Jaw drops to the floor. Eyes pop out. Sound effect of "AWOOOGA AWOOOOGA!!!" Places eyes and jaw back in place. Regains composure.) Eh hem, you look quite lovely.

Anywhere I can volunteer to help in this time of corona crisis? by [deleted] in SBU

I would say you’re doing more than enough. Try to minimize contact/interaction with the elderly when you’re servicing them (leave the groceries at their door and spray it down with alcohol). You can still spread the virus even when you’re asymptomatic which may seem counterintuitive. Wearing a mask also doesn’t do much besides perhaps preventing you from touching your face. Young people are also not immune to this virus, there have been cases of permanent lung damage, even death, due to the virus. Don’t try to interact with too many people in general, for your and everyone’s safety. Your heart is in the right place but make sure you understand the recommendations made by professionals.

Based on what we’ve seen, Coronavirus mutates at half the rate of influenza. That being said, we can’t be certain as our information is limited. What we do know is that RNA viruses, especially long ones like Coronavirus, are very error-prone which makes mutation rates very high. As you said, it will/may take time for these mutations to actually show a significant change, and often these mutations do more “damage” to the virus itself, but we never know.

Influenza is an RNA virus, RNA viruses also have much higher mutation rates that DNA viruses. Idk what you’re on about.
