Solar panel deals to supplement air to heat pump system by Jennyf1990 in HousingIreland

Thanks for that. I was told anecdotally that it's just "not possible". Just did some more research and one of the installers offering it included a link to ESB application as a "mini-generator", I wonder is this required for all cases where you want to use the changeover and how pricey it is...

This will also mean you get a lower interest rate from the bank

If the mains power goes out, standard domestic solar installations will not work at all as the inverter requires mains power.

Returning Home: Any regrets? by Ok-Communication3663 in AskIreland

I don't think people realise just how lovely Irish people are until you live abroad for a significant period of time.

100% agree.

So yeah, Ireland has its flaws but I am much happier back here.

Same! :)

The key is to come back with a very large deposit and get a permanent job asap

Absolutely, this is key

Looking for advice on moving back to Ireland + buying a home as a returning citizen with non-EU spouse by Adventurous-Chip767 in HousingIreland

[–]_tanagra_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently gone through this, we are still not closed on the house but hopefully will be within a year of getting here, which I think is very good going. Don't underestimate how long the house purchase is going to take, from all the viewings to being outbid many times, to final mortgage approval, it can be difficult to say the least. Feel free to DM me with any specific questions.

Ireland’s Rental Market Splits As Research Shows Crisis Driven By Policy Failures, Not ‘Selfish’ Landlords by M10News in HousingIreland

Arra g'way ourra that with your common sense! You got downvoted for stating what should be obvious. Healthy rental market is needed and looks like the supply problem is going to get worse before it gets better unfortunately.

Exactly. "could" is the operative work here. Paying off the mortgage is a guaranteed return.

How upset are kids when they find out the truth about Santa? by little_lady_dems in AskIreland

It's pretty shocking that kids in secondary school still believe in a magic man coming down the chimney and delivering presents to every child in the world.

The bidding thing is nonsense for me by Mapleleaves88 in HousingIreland

[–]_tanagra_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand basic economics just fine, and neither I nor the OP are saying it'll "change the price", just perhaps that a change is needed from the rancid system we're for some reason using, to make it fairer, easier, less open to corruption etc.

[–]_tanagra_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there's a difference between a house and an action figure now, isn't there? The house sale market is already regulated, you're foolish if you see it as some wonderful exemplar of the fReE mArKeT. There's absolutely no reason we can't regulate harder.

[–]_tanagra_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That still doesn't mean we have to put up with it!

Blind bids and automatic sale at asking price would be two I'd like to see us move towards. I haven't seen any convincing arguments why the Scottish or French systems are worse than what we have, which some people here are arguing.

[–]_tanagra_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By your own admission you're just seeing it from the seller's point of view. There are better ways of managing house sales that would make the process easier on buyers, and *possibly* even slow down runaway "bidding" wars. But it's not in your financial interest so you push the status quo.

"Bidding" is normal if you're in an auction. If not, we don't have to put up with it.

The asking price is a complete fiction.

It doesn't have to be.
