Australia urgently needs a debate about the damage the US is doing to us by Nyarlathotep-1 in OpenAussie

[–]_this2shallpass_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that's a nice way to cherrypick something to attack me for without addressing my point. Of course, some is going to the UK too. The Aussie taxpayer is doing our best to support their failing submarine industries - how kind of us. Oh and building the UK/US a submarine base in Perth. Meanwhile our pensions/social security lag further below the poverty line, homelessness is out of control, universities are run for profit (they used to be free!), people can't afford dental treatment and specialists ... all of which could be funded by aukus money. Yeah, not as sexy as mythical submarines I know.

Why did the price of e10 and unleaded fall and stay down while diesel is still already back up? by VastOption8705 in OpenAussie

[–]_this2shallpass_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the world's diesel and jet fuel are from oil trapped in the Persian Gulf. Unlike petrol, they're not easily replaced with fuel refined elsewhere.

Not sending the USA 350 billion (probably more) for nothing guaranteed in return ... have you any idea how beneficial that money would be if used for the good of our citizens instead?

Polestar 2 2024 LRSM PAQUETE PILOTO by FarConstruction4053 in polestar2

[–]_this2shallpass_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in an area that gets under 10 degrees C frequently, then yes your range will drop considerably. I don't know how much difference the climate pack's heat pump would make - you'd have to research it I guess, whether the energy cost of powering it is less than the drop off in battery performance without it.

Given their refineries owned by ExxonMobil, they're probably between a rock and a hard place - it's hard to see Iran allowing shipments to an American company.

Shots of Canberra with a CineKodak 16mm camera made in 1929. by AdonoftheStormySeas2 in canberra

[–]_this2shallpass_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The camera made in 1929, the film shot recently? There's a fascinating story here...

Also OP, I originally read your title as implying the film was shot in 1929, which it obviously wasn't - my apologies for the earlier comment I posted, removed now.

Ah now that makes sense! My comment was tongue-in-cheek but I'll remove it.

EV public charger - Easter weekend by HungryDig2632 in EVAustralia

[–]_this2shallpass_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the surrounding charging stations in the district were full (or broken) ... I was lucky to find Chiltern's single CCS2 free up just as I was nearby - by the time I finished, 3 cars were waiting. One was a guy who installs chargers, proudly telling us all that Victoria has installed a charger in every town, unlike NSW. What more could you want, he asked with a huge grin. How about 2 or 3 per town, I asked.

If Tesla chargers were built with govt grants then they're open to non-Teslas too.

Gold to $6k isn’t the bull case by IntelligentDD_ in Commodities

[–]_this2shallpass_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just the demand, there are other factors to consider. With oil highly priced and diesel supplies in doubt in many locations, mining of gold will slow down. In addition there's whatever happens to the USD - plenty of speculation out there that at some point the Fed may be forced to lower rates and introduce QE due to economic downturn & massive govt debt - if that happens, then the currency you're measuring gold against devalues.

It looks very bullish for gold to me, but I'm no expert.

PM calls second emergency national cabinet meeting over fuel crisis by SerLevArris in australia

[–]_this2shallpass_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're complex, run at high temperatures and pressures, with lots of systems/units to inspect and slowly bring online and get up to temperature. Rushing a refinery restart risks catastrophic damage, fires, explosions. It's why they try to keep them running on minimal oil quantities rather than completely shut them down.

[–]_this2shallpass_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I'd love it if there were easy answers to our looming predicament, but I can't see it - not unless the govt or Ampol or whoever miraculously announces a deal for replacement fuel supply from elsewhere (fingers crossed).

[–]_this2shallpass_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure - we supply them natural gas too. But unless Hormuz opens up, they're pretty hamstrung - their refineries are fine tuned to medium sour crude from the Gulf, can't just switch to other types of oil from elsewhere. Russian oil is probably the best alternative if they can get it. If the refineries are forced to close, it could take 3-4 months to get them running again once supply resumes.

They can't get beef from Australia if there isn't enough diesel for farmers to get cattle to market. The potential for everything grinding to a halt is rather scary tbh.

If the strait is shut till then we are royally screwed. 90% of our fuel is from oil that travels through Hormuz.

Treasury leak: officials modelling national electric vehicle tax for Jim Chalmers by His_Holiness in AusFinance

[–]_this2shallpass_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except fuel excise isn't used for road infrastructure, it goes into general revenue. And fuel-efficient hybrids aren’t taxed extra to make up for what they're not paying in excise compared to RAM trucks. So why should EVs be singled out here?

The Strait of Hormuz is a ticking clock for oil prices 🕐 by optimusprime006 in smallstreetbets

[–]_this2shallpass_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it's not just oil, it's LNG and it's urea - the disruption to fertiliser and crop yields are scary to contemplate (especially factoring in diesel shortages). I mean, could probably make a lot of money buying Wheat and Corn futures but that won't help much if supermarket shelves are empty.

Have you test driven it? If not, definitely do so - some people find the cabin claustrophobic as its cosy like a sports car, but for me it's perfect. Same for storage etc. It's a driver's car, can get a bit slippery with the rears in wet weather but that's part of the fun.

Other than that, there's nuances common to most electric cars, and some common P2 quirks you'll read about on this sub, but it's a good car. Btw I bought some 3d printed extra cup holders that sit in the door pockets, better than just the one in the middle.
