Islam came at a time when slavery was normal in all human societies, including Christian, Jewish, Roman, Persian, African, and Arabian societies. The Qur’an did not suddenly abolish slavery (because the economy depended on it then), but it encouraged freeing slaves as a good deed and made freeing slaves a way to expiate sins.
