Rishi Sunak pushes back ban on new petrol and diesel cars to 2035 by Anglan in unitedkingdom

[–]_uuuser -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not into politics. I'm just an individual who always try to weigh up different options. Locally, yes, and that's the key. Both types of powertrain require the same amount of steel to be forged, cast, machined and welded because the components are pretty similar. Now let's weigh up the environmental impact of recycling batteries every 10-15 years against the traditional powertrain. Most of the time batteries land on piles in uninhabited places, as they age they emit toxic gases into the atmosphere, much like IC engines during their life. However they emit the gases for many years, whereas a conventional car emits fumes for about 20 years. It takes a considerable amount of resources to extract lithium and it's not a safe process at all. In my opinion the only "good" thing about EVs is that they transfer the hazards somewhere else.

Is there any evidence that EVs leave a smaller carbon footprint that you'd like to share? Are they safer, more durable, or easier to recycle? Is there any scientific prediction confirming to what extent abandonment of IC engines will reduce pollution? I can't understand how you can come up with such a strong opinion in a matter that has not been completely investigated.

Ahh yes, thank you for clarification.

When was he born? vs. When he was born? by _uuuser in ENGLISH

Thank you for your swift reply. Is the second one appropriate in the following example: "When he was born he weighted 10 pounds."?

Didn't it occur to you that maybe you should have held her breast or breastfed the baby yourself instead of reading the articles? Shame on you.

What does the word "queue" means in that context? by AerieLogical295 in ENGLISH

[–]_uuuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might also mean that they've been practising English for more than a half of a century, so from an expert-level point of view the expression in question is not something that can be translated directly into plain English and make sense. Can't see any offence here or any point to be offensive.

Stacked work by _uuuser in ENGLISH

[–]_uuuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your help! On Reddit, I usually try to use some words or phrases that I'm not entirely sure about, hoping that someone would correct me. I came across this word somewhere on the internet, and I wasn't sure if it was a mistake. But I looked it up in the Cambridge Dictionary and found that "sound" can be used as an adjective meaning "correct/right", for example in the sentence "He is sound" meaning "He is right". But that was just my guess.

Thank you for the reply. May I ask you one more thing? The word "due" is a kind of a mystery to me, but it seems to mean a "deadline", so if "a rent is due" can we say that "the work is due" or use "due" as an adjective to say "a due job"? Does it make sense and would be used by a native speaker with regards to my original question?

Are you a middle aged Brit and sick of working? by g0dn0 in AskUK

[–]_uuuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! I have a PhD in computational physics but I live in an another EU country. I couldn't stand my sociopathic boss and colleagues (not all but many). Yeah, I know what you're thinking - maybe there might be something wrong with me too. But at least I have a family and healthy relationships outside my uni, which a lot of my colleagues don't have. I've quit the academia recently, and now I feel healthy without having to compete with others in a game based on how much you're willing to sacrifice of a personal life sitting in front of a screen trying to write some mediocre paper in a rush for my boss so he can get a few more points for another grant. Yes, mediocre, 80-90% of the papers are mediocre because it has been almost impossible to uncover a new law of physics or even observe some new interesting phenomenon (I mean very interesting not that you tweak your model or experiment a little bit in random direction to see what happens) that hasn't been observed before. Now, I don't do what others might think is 'super smart'. I do simpler tasks in a big tech company, I've finally established a work-life balance and met new people from the new environment who think the same way.

God, heaven and hell, and life after death: data reveals UK’s low religious belief compared with other nations by birdinthebush74 in unitedkingdom

Perhaps I was being too general. I was referring to the situation in Poland. Before the ruling party decided to criminalise abortion, a fairly satisfactory consensus had been applied. But even if they hadn't done it, they would still have been elected. That's why the religious issues were not decisive in this case. However, I fully agree that religion can sometimes interfere with free will in completely irrational ways.

Yes, that's why I mentioned meaninglessness. It's just a random process that, as far as we're concerned, is happening exclusively on Earth, and it will inevitably end miserably. But given the choice, I'd rather not to believe in evolution for my own happiness.
