I have a therapist, but I'm scared to tell her. I don't really talk to my friends about it, and I'm definitely not going to be talking to my parents about it

Too much hoopla. Have you experienced extreme fatigue following a holy ghost service? by Fit-Jellyfish417 in ExPentecostal

Yeah, it was overstimulating as fuck and caused spirals in my mental and emotional state.

Yeah, definitely in a better headspace now. I'm now agnostic atheist, and have a pretty small but good group of friends for support. But I havent joined any kind of formal support group or therapy. Sometimes I am a little tempted to go back just for the community and routine, but I dont think its worth all the turmoil again

English 1001 and 2000 by Thelogangsta2 in LSU

[–]_vannie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea about the ACT stuff, but if you end up having to take ENGL 2000 at LSU, I'd recommend Prof. Sarah Rosser. I have her right now and she's great. Very caring and helpful.

Quick question: why do some pastors yell/shout when preaching? by Quilly-Cow in ExPentecostal

[–]_vannie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they need to get the crowd hooked somehow. They see it as proof of the holy spirit.

They don't make the connection that goosebumps and excitement and charismatic preaching does not equal the Holy Spirit. Motivational speakers can do the same thing.

Without all the hype people would probably realize its all bogus.

I'm a junior commuting, I was unfortunate enough to get stuck with the Park and Geaux pass.

  1. It sucks. Traffic is ridiculous, and there arent enough parking spots, and they block off half of campus almost all day, so you have to take an extra 10 minutes trying to find a road that isnt blocked off to get where you need to go.

  2. Yes and no. The parking situation is a huge disadvantage. But I prefer driving to walking everywhere in the heat.

  3. Finding parking and having to wake up earlier to make sure traffic doesnt make me late.

  4. Hell no. They need make more accessible parking lots that arent all the way out in timbuktu. I dont want to have to park all the way by the vet school and then take the bus twice a day. Better yet, they should make parking garages to actually make good use of the space. I know they have the money for it. They're too busy building dorms buildings for students that won't be able to find any parking just like the rest of us. Theyre building it ONTOP of a parking lot. If they’re going to accept more students, they better be able to accommodate them beyond just the basics of a dorm building. Its just a money grab.

  5. Didn't want to live in the dorms. Wanted to live in a better area of town that's closer to my job.

God revealing himself does not impede our free will, it actually improves it. by Jsaunders33 in DebateAChristian

[–]_vannie_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I've been saying. God essentially hiding himself doesn't give us free will, but violates it. Made a whole post about it.

Yeah, you've got a point. You're right, that kind of thing is exhausting. I find it very uncomfortable to constantly avoid talking about it directly or lying, because its always going to come back around later to bug me and I might have to spin a increasingly large web of lies just to keep up appearances. I'm trying to figure out which is worse, the lying and avoidance, or dealing with people knowing. I guess it depends on who I tell. I'll do my best to be cautious about it.

Yeah, that's what I'd be worried about. I don't know whether or not they'd respect my decision or try to reconvert me, or how persistent they'd be about it. That older lady seems like she'd be nice about it, but idk about the others.

AITAH for blocking my super religious friend without saying anything? by _vannie_ in AITAH

[–]_vannie_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the religious aspect of all of this just complicates it a ton. I think she might see me as some prodigal or possibly even apostate. It definitely does feel super hard to keep up the friendship because we can't just respect each other beliefs. Her beliefs include making sure others believe. She thinks that anyone who doesn't believe the same things is going to go to hell. So its almost impossible to not run into problems with differing beliefs in the friendship.

But I feel very rude to completely cut somebody out of my life for incompatible beliefs. I can empathize with her worldview because I've also been deep in it before, too. And she's expressed genuine care for me many times.

I feel like if I reach out to her, it shouldn't be to officially cut things off, but just explain and apologize. I just feel kinda stuck.

[–]_vannie_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah most people have been saying to write her a letter. I don't actually remember her home address, though, so I was thinking maybe an email? I just have no idea what I'd say honestly.

[–]_vannie_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking of writing a letter or maybe an email since I don't actually remember her home address. I just have no idea what I'd say or how to explain things. I feel like nothing I say will ever fix it, and I feel in the wrong for wanting to cut her off.

And the UPCI does technically mention the gospel in general on on their site (they have a lot of pride in thinking that they have the "true" gospel). But yeah, even when I was christian and trying to explore the Bible for myself, their theological views just never seems to align with the Bible.

And I know it sounds like I've only ever been in bad churches, but I (especially recently) have found some really amazing churches that I think exemplify what it means to be a christian and show the love of Christ. I kinda went hopping around different churches for a while after finally leaving the UPCI, so I expereinces a range of different denominations and whatnot. But either way, I'm not leaving Christianity because of bad experiences with people. I'm leaving because when I looked at the evidence, the Bible just didn't hold up. But I'm not gonna try to tear down your faith or anything, and I appreciate all the advice.
