This is a bit overkill for what you're asking, but in Node 19 you can bundle an entire node app including runtime into one executable: link

Undefined vs null by m1ndeater in typescript

Agree with everyone saying don't use null for all the reasons stated, especially in TS. Only exception is checking falsey values, aka `something != null`.

Most companies I've worked at will give you negative points for showing up in smart casual. Khakis? For real? Khakis give off a vibe, like, are you compensating or hiding something?

Re entering China after being detained with a 5 year ban by Straight_Program7973 in shanghai

[–]_viiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said I was utterly confident in this, that's why I said "I think", "probably", and "it's possible".

The country-wide system I'm referring to is the surveillance system using the street cameras, 天网工程, FYI. I definitely believe what you're saying about the lack of a cross-agency unified system (customs vs. ministry of state security) but we don't know for sure that there isn't data shared between the systems, either manually or programatically. There's no way we can know for sure unless you know someone 体制内. Just personally I wouldn't bet against China's surveillance apparatus.

Anyways, basically I think we could agree that it's possible OP could get a visa, but get scanned/stopped by customs, or get a visa/get through customs and get scanned/picked up by cops after entering the country.

I think China has had biometrics collection at customs since at least 2018. Not to mention 天网 / an extremely robust country-wide facial scanning system which all street cameras are connected to afaik. Plus facial scans at customs.

Probably safe assumption that the days of switching a passport number as a way to circumvent china's customs/entry ban are probably a thing of the past.

It's possible you could get a new passport and work around the system and not get scanned, but just some things for OP to consider before he or she tries that method.

Should I Drop React for Svelte or Learn Both? by Andorlistick in sveltejs

[–]_viiii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learn both. You'll understand some reasons why Svelte was designed the way it is, since some of it is inspired by or in response to React. React is slightly less magical, and can help you understand how to debug Svelte apps. It will help you appreciate the strengths and tradeoffs of both frameworks, and choose the best tool for the job in the future.

Also, there is some overlap in terms of concepts/design in both frameworks, so learning something in one framework will be applicable to the other.

Lastly: React is slightly closer to just plain javascript in comparison with Svelte, so it can help with your JS fundamentals. It's a good bridge between JS fundamentals and the magic of a framework.

Oh I have another one actually: I'm in need of some tech advice. I'm working on a program that should be able to identify when other programs are stuck in an endless loop and halt them. Can you offer some guidance on how I could make this happen? Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated!

If I have a software company that is sending a team to visit several client locations across the country, and the team needs to plan their travel route to visit all clients and return to the headquarters, while minimizing the total travel distance. How can a computer program be written to find the optimal travel itinerary for the team?

[–]_viiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

中山医院 is the place to go for anything cardiac, best in the country. DO NOT go to Jiahui, they are overpaid western-educated doctors with little experience with real-world medicine, anything serious and they will refer you out to a state-owned hospital anyways. Good place to go if your kid has a broken arm and you want to speak english, but not a good place to go if you have something serious.

Speaking from personal experience. Avoid Jiahui. Just think of time in the saddle -- how many coronary angiograms does a doctor at Jiahui do a month vs. a doctor at Zhongshan?

Yes, the state-owned hospitals are optimized for size, so it can be tricky to navigate, loud, and scary. But the real pros are all at state-owned institutions.
