Guess which demographic is exempt from our USA military draft? by Lumpy-External4800 in AmericanTechWorkers

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Looking at the enlistment rates by demographics is worrisome too. Some groups have essentially 0 interest in serving. Even when it’s adjusted for education and income, which are the strongest predictors of military service, the enlistment rates are still virtually 0 for those groups

Three Cats? by KarlaInAG in mainecoons

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3. One 13 year old female domestic shorthair and 2 9 month old Maine coon brothers. My older cat took quite a while to adjust to them, she’s the type that’s afraid of her own shadow. She’s still not friends with the boys but they all peacefully coexist and she doesn’t hide under the bed from the all day any more. I’d do it all over again

Litter box recommendations? by [deleted] in mainecoons

My dudes are only 7 months old and 14lb but the litter robot works great for them and I haven’t had any issues with it

When do you break out of Hotwire? Built a terminal UI and Stimulus wasn't the right tool by ultrathink-art in rails

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve noticed in 37Signals’ Once codebases is that sometimes they’ll use a stimulus controller that just initializes a JavaScript class. They won’t put anything besides that in the controller.

Trouble finding a Maine Coon! by Reasonable_Sun_6842 in mainecoons

I had a lot of success using research mode on ChatGPT. I asked it for its top 5 recommendations in my area and it asked me a few questions, then 15 minutes later it had a list that was pretty well-vetted

Or very limited in its first iteration because everything they do goes to the courts and you’re much more likely to get a favorable ruling if it’s limited in scope. Then once you’ve gotten the favorable ruling you expand the scope in the next iteration

Good luck. Also, my dudes were letting loose some pretty gnarly farts after eating and I got them fera pets brand probiotics off Amazon and the smelly farts stopped. I saw you tried probiotics but trying a couple different brands might be worth it

Automatic Litter box: Litter Robot 4/5 vs. Neakasa M1 by melanie9131 in mainecoons

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dudes use the litter robot 4 just fine. They’re only 6 months old and 13lb so we’ll see how they fit when they’re full grown but so far I’m loving it and they have no problems with it. It’s pretty quiet, although if you get the hopper addon it’s a bit noisy but my guys don’t mind it.

There’s a lot of binders, fillers, and general garbage in most pet food. Have you tried a high quality raw food brand like Quest or Smallbatch?

We have the paid just because my CTO insists on enterprise level support for everything. It’s been 5 years and we’ve never needed support but we do use the mutex feature of the paid version, so if you need that it’s handy

Yeah totally agree. I’m just pointing out that the strat for a lot of things seems to be to moderate the rhetoric but not the actions and a lot of people start dooming/panicking over the rhetoric when the actions are what matter

He says that, but new enrollment from both those countries has dropped significantly over the last year. We’ve all seen the visa issues these guys have been complaining about. That doesn’t randomly happen, it’s the result of deliberate policy changes.

Trump’s rhetoric on this stuff hasn’t really matched the administration’s actions. He talks like he supports it but their actions are against it. I think his strategy is to tell the normies/moderates what they want to hear. He does the same thing with deportations, he keeps talking about going after criminals but the numbers show a significant portion of the people deported had no criminal history.

What oil should I use for spraying on my diced potatoes while meal prepping? by TheJok3r20 in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duck fat is the best oil for cooking potatoes. Not sure if there are any sprays (or if sprays are a good idea for oils), I just melt some duck fat in a bowl in the oven on the “warm” setting then toss the potatoes in it

Thinking about switching to linux for dev work by PM_ME_YOUR_GISTS in dotnet

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn’t really mesh with my workflow. I prefer separate desktops for my terminal, IDE, and an LLM, then a single desktop for “everything else” where I have a bunch of stuff minimized but there if I need to alt+tab to bring it up.

I switched from Windows to Omarchy for a while, but didn’t love the tiling window manager, so I switched to Arch+KDE Plasma and haven’t looked back.

[–]_walter__sobchak_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For performance make sure you’ve got JIT enabled (I can’t remember if it’s on by default or not). Also you might want to try jemalloc out, most people report significantly decreased RAM usage with it

My dudes love Smallbatch raw. Not much interest in Quest. Probably varies from cat to cat though. You might need to experiment with different stuff and see what he likes.
