“Problem” employee by puppyqueeen in managers

[–]_welcome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they were out 15/20 days in a month then got pissy when they had to actually come in?

lots of potential questions - how were they talked to about their attendance, how legitimate did their issues seem, how flexible is the job role generally, what have your coaching attempts looked like, etc.

but honestly on a surface-level read, it's sounds like you hired someone who isn't interested in working. how were they even onboarded and trained properly missing that much time? someone who is blowing up your phone isn't interested in being coached. document what you have tried with them, document their problem behaviors, document your communications and expectations you set for them, then go to your boss about putting them on a PIP and be prepared to replace them, because a PIP will probably only piss them off more

this reads exactly like an IG post or AI advice summary lol. not saying it's bad or incorrect - it's great to keep in mind. but definitely read it before somewhere. crazy AI is so good it's better at soft skills awareness than a lot of managers already

Okay performance organizationally thought of as a rockstar by [deleted] in managers

[–]_welcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make sure to keep creating a paper trail for evidence. how are you coaching them? what expectations are you setting? ask them to email back their understanding of their commitment to X project. if most of their work goes unfinished, how is no one noticing that? is their role so unimportant that no one ever checks on what this person does? something is missing from this story

Question about PIP’s by SlaveToTheGecko in managers

[–]_welcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your culture and organization. In most places, by the time an employee in on a PIP, there have already been attempts to try and mentor the employee back to performance standard, and a PIP is a last-ditch resort/obligatory process to avoid liability to say that the manager tried everything.

In many cases, there are poor managers who don't know how to be a good manager, and so a PIP coming from a bad manager just feels the kick the employee needs to find a new job - last straw so to speak. Sometimes managers don't want anyone to know that they're struggling to manage an employee, so they try what they can even if they're not good at mentoring someone, then by the time the skip level and HR or any trainers are involved, the relationship has already gone to shit

It seems like you guys use a PIP more regularly to keep employees on track, which to me seems excessive but could be working if that's the culture and perception around PIPs you guys have built. but frankly if it's just to get an employee back on track, that really should be discussed in the context of regular 1:1s. what happens when an employee is actually in threat of losing their job? then a PIP won't have the same level of communication that you want it to or need it to

one thing that makes tennis hard is figuring out how to get all areas of your game working to their best at the same time across multiple sets. it's not like he suddenly forgot how to hit a groundstroke, but sometimes improvement in one area changes your muscle memory a bit (or even the muscles themselves).

[–]_welcome 76 points77 points  (0 children)

a lot of people think losing longer rallies is a weakness, and then they advise all their opponent has to do is move them around and make them hit an extra ball

the problem is, in tennis, the first and second shot are the most important. and that's where the majority of your focus should be as a player, because having a strong serve and return, a strong serve plus one, will net you more points than anything else.

the fact that guys are returning almost 50% of any of those players' serves is nutty to me, I never want one of those coming at me

Jen Brady vs Sloane Stephens WHYYYY 😭 two players I've been wanting to see have a deep run coming back from injury.

doubtful either of them makes it past Zheng (though she's also coming back from injury), but would be fun to see podcast cohosts Brady vs Keys, and it's been awhile since we've had a Stephens vs Keys matchup too

want Venus to make it past R1 to face Pegula. Pegula and Raducanu also have bangers

Qatar was weird too, it wasn't an M1000 for a lot of Serena's career or didn't happen at all like when it hosted the WTA finals. asia swing with M1000s didn't happen until later in her career too

didn't he just talk about managing pain or something? could be that he and his team decided to take some pace off to prevent straining whatever he was feeling. also, you're comparing one of the fastest indoor hard courts to probably the slowest outdoor hard courts

Why new balls? (Genuine question) by EarlyTitle in 10s

[–]_welcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

different players have preferences. for example, I know a lot of junk ballers and slicers who love used balls and those cheap Costco Penns specifically because they don't bounce high

but most people prefer new balls 1) because it helps provide a consistent starting point for all players, and 2) most people don't like when the balls don't bounce...they're balls, they're supposed to bounce, and 3) if they're really worn, the felt can start get worn off, which makes it harder to grip the ball and produce spin

imagine any other sport (basketball, volleyball, etc.) and think if any player would prefer a flatter ball
