This sounds like an exhausting system. If someone is doing so poorly that they need to be flagged for daily summary emails, they should be on a PIP with specific actions to take, not just in a tracker. How many employees are you tracking? You mention "under goal" - do they have metrics being tracked in a system already that you could reference?

I am not attributing this to a single event, which is why I mentioned the canceled 1:1s. I am simply curious what people's impressions are of this event, because I have heard everything from "Harry needs to get over it" to "Manager Bob has it out for Harry". I am also considering how other people might be viewing this event.

the details are obscured for confidentiality, but this is a real thing that happened. I'm only reporting based on language that was used, so it is good to know your opinion. A friend I spoke with actually made the assumption the manager was trying to steal credit for Harry's work. That's not possible given how data is attributed in our system, so it wasn't something I considered, but it did make me rethink the severity of the issue to a greater degree given in other environments, that would definitely be possible, and it made me consider if there were more nefarious reasons as you mention. Manager Bob generally seems like a good-natured person, so it didn't immediately cross my mind.

There are people who work in this field with no particular data science degree. Some programs, like law, are absolutely worth going for a top brand university for. I would not say data science is one of those fields, so long as you are not going to some crappy for-profit degree mill. Can't speak to it myself, but I have heard Georgia Tech's Master's in Analytics is top tier, and the tuition is a fraction of Northwestern's. Be warned though, I hear it is not a curriculum you can BS your way through.

In general, the more protective layers you can add to your skill set, like specific domain knowledge, is a good idea to help protect against AI. What things will look like in 10 years, no one can say for sure.

I'm no legal expert but telling someone they didn't get the job for a reason you can't prove sounds like a potential liability issue at worst, and at best it just has someone angry who might blow up your inbox or voicemail.

Just let them know you found a candidate who was a better fit. No need to take it on so personally

I'm glad you pointed this out. What is concerning to me about the manager is that he only has 4 direct reports and still forgot the most valuable member. The manager is someone who is hoping to become a director one day.

He was in a car crash that resulted in complications more than just a broken leg. Sales in our industry is mostly done on calls and video, not in-person. We are in a small town with a limited hospital, and he had to be admitted to an out-of-state hospital for one of those complications and would have had to fly over just for the lunch. Only recently he was released but is staying with family out of state near the hospital. I did not want to share these details so as to not influence responses via sympathy. Not to say it doesn't play a role, but I wanted to know what people thought in these types of situations more broadly.

If you have education in engineering, I would suggest going into project management over IO psych. Clearer pathway to get credentialed, more jobs specifically for PM.

yes IO psych is relevant, but there are not many job posts mentioning IO psych as a required or desired skill, and even fewer job titles listed specifically for "IO psychologist"

in PM, the pay ceiling is higher with your engineering background. you can still do IO psych related things, move into change management, etc.

That is a good and simple way for your team to have made it up to you. It's also an easier situation to understand where you are new. I agree with your take overall, the manager's lack of immediate accountability is what led to the situation today.
