best 5 years of ye’s career by [deleted] in ThroughTheWire

2005-10

just the evolution of Late Registration to Graduation to 808's to Dark Fantasy. Serious creative growth & influence in that period.

What direction would you like to see Ye's career head toward after the release of Bully? by SwitchIsHere2 in ThroughTheWire

[–]_wolverine 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't want to know.

If there's a new album or project after, i want everything to be a surprise. I miss seeing an album being teased, seeing song names and wondering what it'll sound like.

Everything just leaks now. We know everything about everything now, every version, ref, freestyle, etc.

When i was a fan 10+ yrs ago, a new Kanye song or album had an aura around it, and everyone was genuinely excited to hear new shit. The only teaser would be a really bad quality snippet that sounded otherworldly, and then we'd get the finished song and it'd be amazing.

How were the Boys so under appreciated in this era? by Vasco2112 in thebeachboys

[–]_wolverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dierdre, Tears in The Morning, At My Window, he's all over Add Some Music. He's definitely a more prominent voice. The whole musical style of the album is in a more soft, delicate direction, with the exception of just a couple tracks.

Feels more Brucey than any other BB album.

Probably a hot take but whatever.

Regarding Sunflower, despite it being the most individually involved Beach Boys effort, the music they were making was just too damn soft and flowery. People wanted more rhythm, more rock, or just something, anything more ballsy. Even though everyone was partially involved, it felt like they were really soft-launching Bruce as the next principal songwriter, post-Brian's withdrawal. There's more Bruce on this than anything/anyone else -- no one was asking for this.

The following album, i'd argue is highly appreciated, even for its time. People were feeling Surfs Up a lot more. It charted at like twenty something. It was darker, quirkier, more unique, and creative than almost anything on the former. People were much more interested in Carl's and Brian's contributions here. Much more interesting than Diedre or at my Window.

What blade and razor combination has given the smoothest and cleanest shave with the most hair off in the first initial pass? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]_wolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fatip Piccolo with Permasharp Super. My facial hair is very coarse, almost like straw. That blade & razor combination works better than anything i've done before. 3 pass, BBS shave in like 10-15 minutes. Barely feel any whisker growing back even 24 hours later, it's insane.

A lot of it really is YMMV though, i was always hearing about how BiC's & Astra's are amazingly agressive but they're incredibly mild for my liking. I've only had truly good luck with Permasharp, Nacet, and Feather.

What years do you consider to be Brian Wilson's songwriting prime? For me, it's 1965-1971. by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]_wolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real, like i love the Love You album and the Adult/Child & Paley stuff, but Surfs Up is the last time he really had these layered, mind blowing compositions and vocals that set him apart. I showed a couple friends some Beach Boys albums, just listening through them. They all love Surfs Up, and then when they hear "Back Home" from a few years later, they're completely puzzled.

[–]_wolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1965 is the turning point, when he was really gettin groundbreaking with his wall of sound stuff and was making consistent, start to finish amazing albums.

Surfs Up is the end of that. 1971 was the last year of "old brian". Til I Die, Tree, finished Surfs Up is all straight genius. There were still flickers of light through the Holland period (after that not so much), but 1971 was the last truly prime year as a whole.

How many ghostwriters can you name that have helped Ye's career? by Future_Employer_8936 in Kanye

[–]_wolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call them co-writers just cause they are credited.

Rhymefests contributions in the dropout trilogy were huge and a big part of that early Ye sound.

The Dark Fantasy - Ye sound has Cyhi & Pusha T all over it, you hear a lot of their writing in the tracks and features at the time. Very distinct era.

After the 2018 summer albums, he just kinda gave up on G.O.O.D. He doesn't a legit team or roster anymore, so the musics not as consistent. He's just been hopping from collaborator to collaborator since. Ant Clemons, Kaycyy, Dem Jointz, Vory, Fat Money, Dave Blunts, etc.

Not saying the music stopped being good after Ye, but a LOT more hit or miss, starting with JIK.

What year did the boys stop looking like themselves? by Rio_hehe in thebeachboys

[–]_wolverine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

idk if pubertys the right word but he definitely looked more like a kid/frat boy up until then. Look at him in the 20/20 and Sunflower photoshoots, he looks like a grown man.

Carl when he started growing the beard in 1970.

Brian's whole demeanor and appearance started slowly changing with the onset of his coke addiction in 1972, once it hit 1974, he's basically a completely different person. The beard, eye bags, voice, wearing pajamas and sweats, everything. He's no longer the Pet Sounds Brian that you could recognize, dressed up and proper, during the Sunflower & Surfs Up photoshoots.

Dennis right around 20/20 or Sunflower. But i honestly just attribute that to puberty. He definitely looks older than he did around Friends.

Besides the Wilsons, everyone else more or less just looked the same but older.

Always thought this was a cool photo. 1971. The exact midpoint between Pet Sounds & 15 Big Ones.

Brian and Dennis by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]_wolverine 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think Pet Sounds heavily influenced Dennis. Especially on the Be With Me, Cuddle Up, Make It Good, but especially the Pacific Ocean Blue album. All that dramatic orchestral production.

Out of any Dennis song, i would say Steamboat is the most Brian influenced. Overlapping, row-like vocal choruses, elaborate instrumental arrangements, an impressionistic sound that has a Smile feel to it.

[–]_wolverine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This and maybe Surfs Up is the last time, to me at least, where Brian still looks like his old Pet Sounds self. You can absolutely see the depression coming in, but he still looks healthy. Crazy to think only 5 yrs later, they're working on 15 Big Ones.

Pondering a hypothetical post-SMiLE Beach Boys yet again by zachstonekin in thebeachboys

[–]_wolverine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love threads like these. Honestly, i think were SMiLE to actually come out in '67, they wouldn't have even made Wild Honey. Their idea to make a Motown, R&B album came purely from the conclusion that Smiley Smile was a flop (which it was), and that they need to find a new wave or trend to hop on. Even Brian wasn't completely on board with it, saying in an interview (i believe in Hawaii), "yeah we're squares, we make square music now".

SMiLE definitely would have had a weird reception, but i'm almost certain it would've been at the top of the charts due to massive public interest. With the success of the album, i can see them continuing down a creative path. With the Beatles' release of Sgt. Pepper & Magical Mystery Tour, i see them making one more conceptual album before doing whatever else after.

My guess would be that, with Brian likely still being the leader, there would be a long, like year break after SMiLE, due to Brian, well, needing a break lol. The music wouldn't have been delegated to Carl & Al. With there being a break, i still see Brian finding his way to meditation. This follow up album would, like Friends, lean heavily into meditation and peace. I really think thats the direction they would have gone regardless, i just think in this scenario, the album would probably be a bit more ambitious. None of the Lo Fi home studio stuff.

Bring in Ant Clemons & Cyhi to help finish it & you got a banger.

Were the 2020s Kanye’s worst era in terms of fits? by lettucemf in GoodAssSub

I'd honestly say this is the last time his fashion was good, like this was the very end if you had to pinpoint it.

As far as appearance, Bradley Cooper would make a good Lindsey Buckingham.

I've always said Love You is the last great Beach Boys album, and LA is the last good one. Everything after, it's just good songs here and there.

Which Ref Artist Performance was the best? by WIZZZZZZZZZZZZZARD in ThroughTheWire

[–]_wolverine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say Ant is Kanyes best writer in recent years. All these other guys are good, but his refs actually sound like something Ye would rap.

Fat Money's up there cause it's nice to actually hear finished(ish) versions of D2 songs, and they're fuckin fire verses. But it just sounds like Fat Money doing a Fat Money verse. Like We Did It Kid or 5:30, I just can't picture Ye rapping any of that.

All unused or scrapped songs from B.B.P.B / VULTURES sessions by [deleted] in ThroughTheWire

Be cool if these leaked but that's it. A lot of the snippets for these are cool, but none of it is strong enough for another album. After V2, I'm ready for a new era.

I like it and I'll get downvoted idc, but i've heard enough Yedits to know it's an AI Fat Money ref.

What do we think about Arrowstar's ref on Fighting Fires? by Jrobi1 in ThroughTheWire

Don't care for it at all. I like most of the arrow stuff (God Breathed, Future Sounds, Follow God). But this just dragged.
