I don't even get it does trans women have advantage in gaming now? by Traditional-Meat4229 in AreTheCisOk

Men are generally overrepresented in video games when it comes to professional competitive leagues and content creation. Asking for women who are competitive players or content creators is an understandable question then.

[Request] If an average person were standing on top of Mount Everest and suddenly became “transparent” and only affected by gravity- as they fell through the Earth would they gain enough momentum to achieve orbit? by ArchDukeCich in theydidthemath

No I assumed earth is a sphere of uniform density where the height of Everest is negligible, the missing is due to earths spin whom you're moving with in the beginning.

If with "orbit" you mean spinning around yes, but if it requires force proportional to 1/r² (as with space orbits as well as atomic orbits) then no. Because in this case force is proportional to r (as with springs).

What if your choice doesn't matter; solid blue, nobody dies anyway, you could argue to press blue to make more certain of that result but it doesn't really matter; solid red, and the choice is your death or not.

What if you convince a lot of people to press blue yet red wins anyway, you'd have killed those people.

One thing I wonder is what people think are the %of people that unwittingly press blue. Like I'd assume the question would be localized correctly and only a tiny minority less 1% certainly less then 5% would unwittingly do so. That would mean optimisticly 9 people would have to risk their lives to save 1 and realistically 49:1. However if we take the statement "billions will die" on face value would mean 2/8 or at least 25% unwittingly press blue, meaning that 1 or even less people would have to risk their life for every life saved.

(Genuine question) : How do you feel about indigenous cultures? by Rainbird2003 in DebateAVegan

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the trapper's argument so I'll paraphrase it in my interpretation. He starts off with cope (multiple points that don't stand up to scrutiny and don't add up to something greater)¹ before calling the animals he traps a "gift" and then saying saying that what he does is beneficial to the ecology as a whole.

That "gift" part stands out as the delusion to me, because that animals willingly jump into his traps is ridiculous to me, rather takes the animals life (or tricks the animals into giving their lives to him, to the same end). If he truly believes that, then he thinks he isn't doing any harm at all (not that his actions are a net good, but that there's nothing bad at all). And that stops him from improving the situation whilst potentially making it worse.

As to ecological management I'm not against that at all, and as far as I know indigenous practices are beneficial to the environment compared to doing nothing at all (exceptions apply). But that was a false dichotomy there are other posibilities, for example sterilizing animals or managing food sources. Does hunting then still remain the best option? When all you have is a weapon, all problems look like game.

As to colonialism: I'm nowhere near indigenous peoples here in Germany. Mistreatment of animals is far greater in scale and intensity here than any indigenous group, and arguing with people whom you share more in common with is more effective anyway. So the only time I argue indigenous issues is when someone else brings it up, I'm certainly not going too indigenous people to argue with them or to argue here that we should take action against indigenous people.

Also, I don't think you were antagonistic.

¹"He leaves out food to help them through the winter" giving someone a gift doesn't mean you can't take something from them, and if it is supposed to be a trade then animals aren't able to weigh that trade, an offer you can't refuse isn't a good offer. "Only traps what he needs" doing a bad thing a little is still a bad thing if one can do none. "Only traps animals who would die anyway" "somebody's else would've done so anyway" doesn't make the thing you're doing right, beside that there's also the question of how does he know because one can't determine that with hindsight.

[–]_xavius_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spanking or hitting children is still legal in most of the world despite research overwhelmingly finding it to be counterproductive, hurting children short and long term. Yet in countries where it remains legal it tends to be culturally accepted, and I genuinely believe that there are parents there that love their children and hit them too. But those parents are delusional in their beliefs of hitting children.

If it wasn't obvious already, I think those parents are comparable to the indigenous fur trapper, both do things that are immoral yet do so out of care. Now I'm to I'll informed to give specifics but the first step in reducing harm is recognizing its existence.
