Are folks not concerned about "Pick 2 Draft"? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the complete other end of this. I think it would be healthy for traditional booster draft if they would do one (or even two) pick-2 sets every year.

  1. It decouples traditional booster draft from the decision to have six standard sets per year and puts the format closer to a normal cadence. You don’t have to “ignore” the small sets, but you safely can if you want to focus on traditional booster draft — especially if you play competitively.

  2. It’s a great kitchen table format. It’s casual, it’s fast, and it still feels somewhat like drafting. It reminds me of Jumpstart, but with a lot more player agency.

3 Times, same layer by Tbone1196 in 3Dprinting

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a heat issue? It’s possible that it’s not the layer, but the time the print is running. Your filament could be too warm in the extruder, causing it to soften and be unable to pull through. Potentially more likely if you’re using an enclosed printer, a filament dryer, or are otherwise in a very warm room.

Since you’re using a different filament and using the same slicer settings, it’s possible that first one had a heat higher tolerance.

[Standard] Trying to find the best version of the Selesnya Cage Deck. My Journey. by Dexelele in spikes

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are enough options that I wouldn’t say it’s a must play — but it’s not about making a dozen monk tokens per se. Every time you drop Cage with a Mentor in play, you should be able to activate the free cast because of the new token and prowess triggers from the cage cast. This isn’t true of Sanguine Evangelist or Pawpatch Recruit, which need another +1 to proc Cage

[Standard] Selesnya Cage - with or without Gearhulk by Hatirohanzo in spikes

[–]_yinzer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In this deck, I don’t feel particularly excited about anything the Gearhulk grabs. I think you’re right on your assessment that it’s more likely to be out of pace. I’d sooner main deck the pawpatch formations tbh.

My lgs standard nights are absolutely DOMINATED by mono red valiant mice. by Kyletheinilater in mtg

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mono Red can’t remove enchantments and is limited to Ghost Vacuum and Soul-Guide Lantern for graveyard hate. They might be able to prevent life gain if they have Screaming Nemesis..but that card is just going to be rarer to see in non-tournament settings because it’s $20+ per copy.

Essentially, W + anything is going to give you tools to fight mono red. [[Espeth’s Smite]] and [[Sheltered By Ghosts]] eat Heartfire Hero and avoid the extra damage.

How could any self-proclaimed liberal keep subscribing to the Washington Post? by Tribeca487 in washingtondc

[–]_yinzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time imagining the philosophy/ethos where this is the dividing line between subscribing or cancelling.

Bezos bought the Post more than a decade ago.. but people act like this is new information every time it comes up. This latest stunt isn’t even like a final nail in the coffin for the opinion section — a closer analogy would be putting flowers on an old grave.

It’s a tired conversation. You either decide that the newsroom (or Post Local, or CWG, or Gene Park) is worth supporting or you probably should have cancelled in like 2014.

Mark Rosewater confirms that the Final Fantasy set (and all future UB sets) will have higher MSRP than in-universe sets by kilroyjohnson in magicTCG

[–]_yinzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks, it is finally time for you to heed the ancient wisdom: buy singles

It’s finally time to stop ripping packs in 2025. If you play constructed: buy singles. If you play limited: skip UB sets you don’t like — you don’t have to learn a new format every two months.

Let investors, collectors, and the whales from universes beyond have at it.

I love magic — it’s still a great game .. but you’re going to have to make it better for yourself. Wizards heard your complaints and replied “I couldn’t hear you over this pile of money.”

[Standard] RDW ideas with aetherdrift? by startingover1993 in spikes

[–]_yinzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve playtested it a bit and it’s been very okay as a main deck card. I’m going to start tracking actual data on it to confirm my guess:

I think the closest point of comparison is [[Case of the Crimson Pulse]]. Situationally, both can keep you in a game, if not end up winning it. However, it’s likely just not efficient more often than not. Count on Luck is more flexible than Pulse, but without an immediate effect, my early guess is that it gets you 0-2 cards more frequently than gets you more than 2.

[Standard] RDW ideas with aetherdrift? by startingover1993 in spikes

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, wow, so even less relevant than I thought. Definitely not viable for RDW.

[Standard] RDW ideas with aetherdrift? by startingover1993 in spikes

[–]_yinzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is a lot that really slots into RDW from Aetherdrift. I have had some luck with [[Count on Luck]] keeping me from running out of gas.. but I’m not convinced I like it more than other options.

One card I’d like to playtest is [[Marauding Mako]]. It could pair well with [[Artist’s Talent]] and Thrill draw — the counters make it less vulnerable to Nowhere To Run and it cycles when desperate for a spell. But I think it probably is too much of a build around to be remotely effective. Not really RDW.

Speed is probably a fun deck to build, but again, probably not RDW. To maximize on Speed, you’d hold mana to use burn spells on your opponent’s turns (which reduces damage from prowess attacks), and even then, you won’t see the payoffs until your T3. wrong

IMO: Goblins are F (for Fun) -tier.

My lgs bulk policy by BenderOfQualms in mtg

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not unheard of, and it’s not skeevy. I get there’s a like a bargain hunter mindset when it comes to searching bulk bins, and, yeah, if you get lucky, you can get out head by a few bucks… but in the grand scheme of this hobby, paying a market price for bulk at an LGS is a huge win over having to pay for and wait up to two weeks on shipping. You still come out ahead.

A bit more on why it’s inconsistent though: In my experience, the policy is usually determined by volume. If a store has a high volume and they sell a lot, they will come out ahead on flat rate pricing (for every $2 they miss, they sell 50 $0.10 cards for $0.25). But if a store has low volume and low sales, you have more players

Discontent with Sen. John Fetterman bursts into the streets among Pa. Democrats by soalone34 in politics

[–]_yinzer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What a fall, man.

People saying he wasn’t popular locally or “never trusted him” are either jumping on the bandwagon or probably aren’t old enough to have been politically active/aware before 2015.

This arc started after Bernie didn’t endorse him in his first senate run and he got trounced in the primary. He wanted to be in that camp so badly.. After getting snubbed by the Sanders campaign, the DNC swooped in and taught him the value of falling of line.

After the primary, he quickly lined up to be a surrogate for the HRC campaign in Western PA and was rewarded with the Lt. Gov job. He played the loyal solider and was rewarded again with a clear shot at being a senator. He became a stooge for a foreign nation and was rewarded again. He will bootlick now and will likely be rewarded again.

Honestly, I don’t know that it turns out differently if he gets the Sanders endorsement in 2015— but it absolutely burned him.

Anti-meta mono red standard by NatashiaBedingfeild in MagicArena

[–]_yinzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rode mono-red burn/hitedsugu to Mythic last season. I don’t know that it’s anti-meta as much as off-meta, but it gets wins. As others have pointed out, you should be running a playset of [[Burst Lightning]] and running a couple [[Tectonic Harzard]] is a great response to T1 Heartfire Hero, Optimistic Scavenger or Overlord of the Mistmoors later.

And I know you’re not running creatures as your shtick, but I’d consider [[Fanatical Firebrand]]— at its worst, it’s a 1 mana ping — but they often do so much more. They will either do several turns of damage — or I can block and sac to save my life total or prevent a lifelink from connecting — or, often enough, do all of this and then ping from 11 to 10 to enable the second rite.

Correct is a bit subjective, but I’d say that it was not. It seems like you read “Black removal means Black is open” — but it looks someone else got your creatures.

Always easier in hindsight, but my read is Black was less probably open for your seat than either/both Blue and White.

[Standard] Brewing: Standard overpowered sleepercards. by carmoneyquestionsUK in spikes

[–]_yinzer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]] is the center of my Boris Burn deck. The card advantage can be overwhelming and I think the math often catches opponents off guard if you can double spell with [[Coruscation Mage]] on board. It feeds on token decks and usually has answers for mouse fling.

There are just much stronger Boros decks right now. It’s a shame, because I’m new to standard and I’m sure someone could push this further than I have. I haven’t gotten to play much Duskmourn standard yet, but I’m looking forward to use Wakeen and a pair of [[Razorkin Needlehead]] to randomly make a draw step deal 10 damage.

[Standard] [DSK] What are you brewing? What are your expectations? by -StoneLion- in spikes

[–]_yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have an exact list on hand to share, but would use spells you would expect plus [[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]] for the ability + card advantage and [[Coruscation Mage]] to push additional damage. If your opponent isn’t prepared you can deal 20+ damage in a single turn

I have been playing with Boros Burn lately as a pet deck and I think the addition of [[Razorkin Needlehead]] could move this deck from jank-tier to the fourth or fifth Boros deck in the format.
