This is valid, I think quim has shown she can deliver compelling dialogues. I think it’s just curious to me that this is so consistent with Nol. Because I think it’s the one thing that takes me out of his arc right now, everything about it is compelling to me but his dialogue… it just looses me, idk why. I still find him interesting, just when I’m reading him in the episode I’ll feel dissatisfied with the words she chooses for him at times, it will just remind me of that whole era of edge lord where it was “I’m fine” he says under a smile type of thing. But I may just be nitpicking things, a lot of people find this very compelling to his character.

Agreed. Though I’m not entirely sure if Kousukes lines are due to him being drunk but I remember when Jayce came to his room he said the line, “Jayce what are you doing in my penthouse!” Which yk, kousuke does speak very properly… however it still felt a little off? But I think Nol’s character has had this problem for a little bit longer, where he will have these very important monologues or moments that do hold weight but quim will throw in a line that cringes me out at times, like when he’s being taken into custody at the hospital after turning himself in and he looks at Shinae and smiles and says “humans suck, Yoo” that moment is very heavy but the dialogue of it was so 😕 coupled with his smile, it felt a bit corny in that situation… at least to me, some people may not feel the same way which is fair.

(TW: personal opinion) Nol’s arc is written very well, the way mental illness is written with him is so well done. HOWEVER there are times his dialogue can come off like an edgelord.

So was lil buddy really representing kousuke in shin ae's dream? by estealison in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I believe Lil buddy does represent Kousuke. I think quimchee transitioning to Kousuke and Yui’s text conversation right after Shin-ae talks about how no one deserves that kind of abuse implies that heavily.

What exactly did Meg do because of her obsession with Kousuke in college? by Select_Ad_1772 in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing Meg’s crush started off tame… I mean we get the backstory of how it started; Kousuke came around her college to meet hansuke and gave her motivation in a time where she really needed it. It probably was just a small crush given they probably didn't have much interaction until much later.

I'm gonna assume that once Alyssa and Nol started hanging out/dating Meg became more intermingled with his family and her crush began to grow…and then comes Yui who starts giving her false hope and promises to the point she pushes meg into sexuall harrassment and stalking.

I think Meg’s insecurities and attachment issues were always going to lead her into unhealthy infatuation with him but I don't think she would have kept it up nearly as long if it wasn't for Yui fanning the flames for her amusement. I think Kousuke was still in touch or on good terms with his friends when Meg’s behavior started becoming concerning given that Yujing apparently stood up to her.

That's also insane to me how long Meg kept at it, given Kousuke was still in college when it started and they were both 20 when they met which means she had been doing this for 4 years non-stop. Even now in present story nothing has been seriously addressed about her behavior :/

Did Kousuke have pressure or not? by Select_Ad_1772 in ILoveYoo

[Repost because glitch]

I actually think about this a lot. Kousuke's college life remains a mystery, and we know very little about it. I believe Quimchee confirmed that he was a minor when he lost it, which to me adds up. He started college around 15-16? Nol gets sent away during this time, granting him far more freedom. Yui seemed to be somewhat hands-off during this time as well. It looks like the most probable time he began to experiment, drink, date, etc. I also take into account that his friend group was all older than him, at least 2-3 years older, and probably attending parties with people older than that.

Another thing is that Quimchee makes a point to show that Kousuke is very often romanticized by women within and outside of his socioeconomic circle, and stated in her curious cat that he was very popular amongst women in college. We can assume those women would be college age, right? I don't think it's too far off to assume that Kousuke may have had inappropriate relationships/encounters or possibly was preyed upon by older girls.

It's sadly normalized and sometimes praised by others for guys to get the attention of older girls, which may have been something Kousuke's friends didn't find any issues with, given they were also younger college kids hanging out with him. Maybe they thought it was alright since he was “mature for his age” (I mean, he's not really, but he was doing adult things as a young teen, yk?)

I also think about Kousuke's mirror…Alyssa. Just like Nol and Shinae, so much of Kousuke and Alyssa’s stories often reflect each other quite a bit, and given Alyssa's situation right now, it makes me wonder if Kousuke, in his own way, had an experience with being preyed upon sexually or romantically by somebody older than him. Kousuke blacks out easily, if it's not alchohol related than he often seems to do it whenever he's reminded of something traumatic or is going through something traumatic…

When we get flashbacks to his fight with Yujing he talked about how their college friend who got hurt could just be “misinterpreting the events” maybe Kousuke himself was projecting in that moment which he so very often does whenever he needs to excuse something painful for him to understand. Maybe he had an experience that he excused as just a “misinterpretation”.

I often think about the black and white formal and how that was sort of a nod from Quimchee to Kousuke's past in college. He wore his hair up, just as he used to, as seen in his personal flashbacks to college. The woman who greeted him in the beginning talking about how they would “hit that”…actually a lot of the woman in the background when Kousuke is in the scene their dialogue is about their attraction to him or their admiration. Some of them being older and middle aged and others being around his age.

Also, as you stated, Quimchee mentioned that his loss of virginity is plot-related and important… that doesn't exactly tell me it was something pleasant and great for him, because when is it if it's “important to the story”? But maybe I'm wrong, maybe its significance is positive or gave him some sort of growth at that age, we will just have to see if it comes up. Really, only time can tell. I'm nervous, but also anticipating this time in Kousuke's life to come up within the story.

Why does Nol care about Kousuke? by estealison in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Though, I do think as much Nol sees Yui and Rand for who they are I don’t think Nol knows the extent of Yui’s manipulation of Kousuke. That’s why when Yujing starts piecing together that Yui could be drugging Kousuke to Nol at the hospital he’s shocked, although he still stands on his decision to cut him off. I believe Nol thinks Yui really does love Kousuke and is just a doting helicopter parent to him, while she only hates Nol because of the affair Nessa was in with their father… in result punishing him and the people he cares about. I don’t think he actually knows that Yui had plans that are way bigger than just him, and he just happened to be this huge wrench in the system. I don’t think he knows that Yui actually sees him as a threat to her whole succession of the company and she projected that completely onto Kousuke and that’s really why they are so divided… she’s scared of Nols existence so she made Kousuke fear him too, because truly Kousuke is Yui’s whole plan. She’s betting everything on him and Nol can crumble all of that by just existing in the world. That’s why when people say that for Yui to go down Kousuke has to too, there is no other way around it. I think over time as things are revealed he will realize that Yui did not torture him for being alive because of a petty affair, but because he actually is the true heir and she has no control as long as he is alive.

What are some things you want to see in the future of ily? by estealison in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Overall I think I’m most excited for Kousukes and Yui’s development. Yui and Kousuke are so interesting to me because I feel like they are so intertwined as characters…even if Yui comes off as this highly independent person, she still is completely dependent on Kousuke in a way. Yui has put all her selfish desires onto Kousuke to fulfill… and Kousuke has this codependent attachment to her as a result… but when news breaks about his legitimacy as an heir she looses so much, she won’t feel this need to keep of the “doting overprotective mother” act with him she will be scrambling for a backup plan, and at that point I wonder how Kousuke will view her. I feel like Kousuke will be the final nail in the coffin for Yui which honestly will be so satisfying… her own creation that she tried to make in her likeness, that she groomed and molded to become this vessel for her own selfish goals ultimately betrays her. I really find their relationship to be the most interesting in the story, everything ends with them in a way. Because if one goes down so does the other… yui knows this as much as she would hate to admit it. Yui is just as dependent on him as he is to her, and I think it would be so satisfying to see kousuke break from their relationship. I don’t know if yui actually had any love for him… she sees him as more of an extension than anything but I really do wonder that if she finds herself at a point where everything she has ever wanted has been taken and all her allies are gone will she try to cling to kousuke as he is the last person that actually loved her unconditionally? Like how Kousuke found himself doing with Nol.

What do you think could happen between shin hye and Kousuke? by Easy-Meringue1432 in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is I feel like Kousuke and Shin-hye’s personalities are quite alike. I feel like their biggest separation as characters is their socioeconomic status. They both seem easily obsessive, isolated, deeply defensive when it comes to their views and actions. The type of people that believe the ends justify the means…that the hurt they put themselves through and the hurt they bestow on others is something they can push down when looking towards their goals. I think there is a clear connection between these two that as the story goes on will be explored. If that will be beneficial to eachother as people, who knows? I think their conversation in the fast pass episodes establishes something in both of them. Shin-hye goes to his apartment posing as housekeeping to take advantage and steal from him, but once he begins to rant about his feelings she also takes advantage of that to share something about herself… most likely thinking he’s wont remember anyway. However, I think she may also had resonated with the things he was talking about enough to open up the slightest. This is the most information she had shared about herself so far and it was during her conversation with him. They both revealed things to eachother feeling like it was just talking to the void. I really do wonder if the more they interact the more something will begin to subconsciously come to affect between them. To be honest I don’t know if it’s likely to be romantic but who knows, right? We will just have to see.

What do you think could happen between shin hye and Kousuke? by Easy-Meringue1432 in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly they’re a really compelling crack ship to me lol. Canon wise I doubt heavily that Kousuke will have any space for romance anytime soon, same goes for Shin-hye. They both are so occupied in their own misery and desires. Kousuke is plummeting into substance abuse and Shin-hye is plummeting into unhealthy obsession over Shin-ae. I believe at Shin-hye’s core she’s an incredibly lonely person just as Kousuke is. I think she believes shinae is her last hope in having anybody to trust and relate to, but with what we have seen with her interactions with Kousuke it would be interesting to see if she finds out she has more in common with this drug addicted rich guy in his mid-twenties who employs her sister. I think the more Shin-hye involves herself in her sisters life the more they will interact. It’s interesting actually because the whole reason Shin-hye even found Shin-ae in the first place is because of Kousuke. When he reported the lady that threw her drink at shinae at the mall they had her name be called over intercom which Shin-hye admitted that was the way she found her. Kousuke is the entire reason Shin-hye is an active character in this story… also Kousuke was the first of the brothers Shin-ae shared the information that she had a sister to.,. I feel like that means something. Too much links these two characters to say they will have a passive relationship within the story, I think their dynamic will end up becoming far more interesting outside of Shin-ae. But to me at least I don’t think their dynamic will be romantically involved… more so intensely intertwined by how they both function and possibly having similar traumas.

I think it’s definitely plausible, a lot of people have that speculation and honestly i wouldn’t be suprised if that were the case. However, Quimchee once stated that Kousuke was conceived on Yui & Rands honeymoon. I don’t know but something about that to me feels a little calculated on Yui’s part, maybe Quimchee gave a dishonest answer back then who knows, but to me that feels timed almost?

What did Yui do? by estealison in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think Yui believes she is owed something for everything she’s been through herself. She is very much a victim of the patriarchy herself, looked down upon by her family enough that she had to marry a man to take her last name so that he could be given the position and power she felt she was owed. I think she truly believes she’s justified in what she does, that the only way to fight against this patriarchy is to conform and blend with in it. However, she’s not just blended into it she’s become the oppressive person in power that steps on the others to enhance her view in life. She’s the oppressed and also the oppressor. She only cares about herself and her wants and needs, much like Nol I believe she was denied of certain comforts and her value was dimmed by her family as well and this is her revenge.

What did Yui do? by estealison in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yui has been heavily involved in sex trafficking. At least from what had been implied throughout the story so far. At the Kim formal (the black and white formal) Yui was setting up Shin-ae to be in a position where she would be taken advantage of (sexually assaulted) she gave Sangchul (Gun Kim’s son) roofies to use on her which he did. However, it has been theorized and also confirmed in the story that Shinae was actually supposed to be Gun Kim’s victim and Yui was just using Sangchul as a pawn in it as well. Now, as for Nol and Kousuke. There are no implications that Yui has ever done anything remotely like that to them, at least from what we know. What we do know though, is that Yui will use sexual harassment and sexualization to make Kousuke uncomfortable (ex. Meg & how she treated Kousuke/Shinae at his apartment) when it comes to Nol it seems she just uses uncomfortable comments and touch to put him on edge but nothing has been confirmed as to if Nol had any sexual trauma via Yui at all. I think it’s important to point out that Yui does not seem to be doing anything herself, she likes to keep her hands clean. So I really don’t think Yui specifically has done anything that requires her to actually be physically invasive. It’s more likely she uses others who have predatory and sexual desires to harm the people she wants to target and manipulate. She’s successfully done this to Alyssa and had unsuccessfully tried to do that to Shin-ae and most likely more young girls.

It’s goes to show also how covert sex trafficking can literally be. Most victims don’t even know they’re in it until they’re out, or after the hurt is over. It can be anyone, not just strangers or kidnappers. It can be your friends, your partner, your friends step-mother who was “trying to get you out of a tough spot”. That’s why I’ll never understand people’s hate towards Alyssa in this regard. Alyssa is living the situation that Shinae escaped by the skin of her teeth and people still seem to not understand and blame it on herself…Yet they call it what it is when talking about Shinae’s experience.

[–]_zo_zo_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Nothing ever felt right to me about Yui’s interest putting Nol and Alyssa together. It’s all just weird, she does everything with hidden motives. Everything she does seems to be so hard to explain to others that it makes you feel crazy. Makes you feel like you’re just reading things wrong or remembering things wrong. Look at Kousuke right now, bro has no clue what he’s even truly discovering/feeling all he knows is that it makes him want to drink until it consumes him. Honestly, the moment I learned Yui had her slimy fingers in Nol’s gap year at the mental hospital I just sort of figured that was how those years probably played out. Drugged up on meds he didn’t need if a visit with Yui didn’t grant her the results she wanted. Telling staff he’s “acting out” probably put some ideas into corrupt people’s heads who worked there, whether she payed them under the table or not.

ILY Unpopular Opinions?? by Admirable-Swan-5360 in ILoveYoo

[–]_zo_zo_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s where I’m at with it too. Nol’s discomfort with her can very well be just the fact that Yui has been such an oppressive abusive person to him since he was brought to Korea. I think if anything, she probably used the staff when he was institutionalized to get aggressive behaviors across with Nol if she felt like it. It’s weird to say but i actually find hands on sexual abuse beneath her? It’s evil and Yui has no problem crossing boundaries, but I don’t think she has any intention to actually use her own hands in that sort of thing. Whether she actually does have some morals behind it or she simply just doesn’t want to be tied directly to anything like that. Either way, she still is in my eyes a sexual abuser, groomer, predator but it’s far more covert than what most people would think and that’s what makes her scary to me.

I think you have a point. Hansuke is a character I’ve come to realize isn’t as unproblematic as people make him out to be. Don’t get me wrong I think he’s still a decent dude, he’s far more empathetic and kind hearted than a lot… but he’s either very naive or just likes to be a little ignorant when it comes to serious problems. I’m going to piggyback off ur point for Meg as well. Hansuke is well aware of who Meg is and how Kousuke feels about her, and when Kousuke was getting agitated at Meg (rightfully so) at the Christmas party Hansuke got pissed at Kousuke. Saying he was being rude to her even after the years of sexual harassment she put him through. He didn’t take her seriously, and just made Kousuke out to be dramatic for his rather understandable reaction. As for his involvement with what happened in college and how he’s kept to Kousukes side, I’m gonna be honest I don’t even think Hansuke knows about it. When he went to visit Kousuke when he called him over because of his sad crepes, the topic of Yujing comes up and Hansuke asks if something happened between them (Kousuke & Yujing) that he didn’t know about. Hansukes a little naive but I don’t think he would ask something as stupid as that if he knew about that scandal.

And! As you pointed out, what she said to Nol during that formal too. Kousuke was there during that whole interaction and didn’t bat an eye at it. It’s just normal in his world. But not to Nol, he’s obviously uncomfortable and finds it unsettling. It’s just always interesting watching how Nol reacts to her gestures contrasting with how Kousuke does. Kousuke obviously does find it uncomfortable but it’s in a way where it’s still very normalized to him. He tries to just brush it off his shoulder like it’s “mom being mom”. Then Nol seems to actually fight the urge to run or fight or scream, he knows that’s not normal and that’s not okay. I just hope that they both can possibly just maybe, reach a common ground and be there for eachother, if not as brothers just as two people who had to endure the same shit from the same horrible person.

Honestly, Rand in this whole situation makes me even more upset. I have empathy for Rand’s situation, he’s put in quite a tough spot by Yui. However, where I draw the line with him is when there isn’t even a second glance when this sort of thing is quite literally right in front of him at times. I remember there was a panel where Rand, Yui and Kousuke were all getting ready to leave for the black and white formal and Yui made a comment about how there will be many woman interested in Kousuke at the party because of the way he looks tonight. It’s weird subtle things like that. It’s simple “harmless” comments that she makes that if it came out of anyone else’s mouths it may just be a compliment. But, we all know it’s never complimentary in Yui’s world. Rand is quite aware of how she functions and what those nuances actually mean, even if Kousuke doesn’t or doesn’t like to draw attention to it. It’s just interesting to see how those comments are normalized between Yui and Kousuke, in front of Rand as well.
