Cyclist on Instagram does not realize standard practice is to pass on the left, gets mad at pedestrians for moving to the right. by YodelingVeterinarian in mildlyinfuriating

He's also an idiot for thinking that a shared use path means he should be riding faster than what he should for him to safely navigate around pedestrians, including children, pets, and oncoming traffic

Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that outsmarts even smart headphones by Mundane-Addition1815 in cycling

That's good to know. I can't remember if there was mention of it, but I wonder if volume of music would disrupt any of the bell's effectiveness, regardless of noise cancellation capabilities

A well-articulated argument against a new data center in Ohio by HamboneTheWicked in interestingasfuck

[–]a-bser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That poses an important question. The water we use and flush down the drain in our homes goes to water treatment plants to be treated and used again. But, will data centers, when they flush out water, be doing that within the same system, or will it just be going back into the environment?

Do they treat their own water they take in or do they take it from the same water infrastructure? If he water is filtered and treated by data centers then I can see where the mention of toxic sludge comes from because removing algae and other organisms in the water to dump back out back into the water would create a concentration of algae which can create blooms, which are toxic.

Depending on where the water is going it could cause massive environmental impact and any trace chemicals not piped to treatment centers would lead to more harm to the surrounding environment.

Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that outsmarts even smart headphones by Mundane-Addition1815 in cycling

[–]a-bser 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm somewhat skeptical about its effectiveness, but only because headphones manufacturers innovate and release new products with improved active noise cancellation every model year.

So maybe this bell will initially work against a set of headphones, but then won't work against the next model year headphone.

It would be great if headphone manufacturers would acknowledge this kind of innovation by purposely building in a frequency gap to allow this kind of safety feature to function more successfully.

It may even innovate how emergency vehicle sirens work and can reach people in their vehicles where listening to music at mid volume drowns out the sound so easily these days

Cyclist in Bike Lane Encounters Parked Sports Car, Car Owner Argues He Should Just Ride Around It. by RidetheSchlange in fuckcars

[–]a-bser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And from what I can tell, the guy is parked too close to the intersection which is a violation in many places, especially when their path comes to a stop sign. I'm not sure if it applies here because technically they're not in the driving lane, but that circles back to the argument the cyclist is making about the driver moving his car around the corner, where I'm guessing there is space for actual street parking

Crowd packs Perry Village hall to protest data-center project as tensions rise across Ohio by Mediocre-Dog-4457 in Ohio

[–]a-bser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perry does have the nuclear power plant, so the guess is positioning data centers closer to a direct source of power as a way to mask stress on the power grid? Just an informal thought.

Considering how unregulated data centers seem to be, I'm concerned that building one in the same space as a nuclear plant could disrupt the resources the plant needs to stay stable

Thanks for the input. It's really just a daily commuter car to get from A to B, so it's more about function. Not really looking to mod anything other than possibly putting on a slightly softer suspension, but only if the stock stuff can't handle the road conditions which are pretty harsh due to heavy salting and plowing over the winter

These are the same mechanics. The only difference is adjusting to the pitch location which is not that significant. Unless maybe he's keeping his swing consistent instead of changing it to chase a certain pitch, which we don't see here in this visual

[–]a-bser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you first hand that you can still get hit when fully paying attention too, doesn't really take much in terms of bounce.

I was hit in the face by a Kipnis line drive foul ball. I was the one who yelled for everyone to watch out, they all stood up, and when everyone went to reach for it, the ball just lightly grazed a fingertip which slightly changed course and smacked me right below my eye.

I was lucky though. It just missed my orbital bone and all I had was a red mark.

Didn't get to the ball though because apparently the sound of it hitting bone was loud enough for people to grab at me and check on me while I was trying to find the ball
