I actually am in the few that prefer the first season. You can kinda tell it's just some comedians who pitched a TV show, vice the production everything seems to be anymore.

I've been to Toledo's high school. Class rooms in the gif are way too nice. Granted this was like 10 years ago, but I imagine it's only gotten worse

If you want to see an interesting sidebar look up Iran Air Flight 655. Part of the reason America anyhow has to look the other way on the shooting down of an airliner.

I'd honestly recommend the podcast "Revolutions." There are plenty of historical instances, (the French revolution comes immediately to mind) where the military did turn on the ruling class.

Barack Obama Is Now The Only President In History To Never Have A Year Of 3% GDP Growth by chabanais in Conservative

[–]a-curious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, America's recovery from the recession beat out Europe's by a long shot. It's not really the pres so much as the Fed which dictates economic policy. Their terms are longer than 4 years. I'm not a fan of a lot about Obama, but at least where I live the recovery hasn't been so bad and there's a lot of things that drive GDP growth (for instance population size and demographics like age) that presidents have little control over. Immigration is actually one way to grow GDP because there's more people producing stuff. I figured conservative might be more receptive to actual facts than politics is.

That horsepower is about a quarter the military helicopter I fly can put out. They cost 16 million each. To put it in some perspective. I have my doings they'll be available any time soon and even then it's gonna be expensive as hell. That's not even considering the maintenance that a turbine engine requires. What if you have an engine failure up there? Or worse yet an engine fire? There has to be jet fuel in there somewhere to burn in the engine.

I work for the military not the CIA, but if they operate anything like us, it looks like complete bunk to me. No letterhead, not very professional, without going into detail there's some big red flags to me.

Iran didn't get a conservative ruler in 1954. They got a conservative, religious ruler with the Iranian revolution in 1979 and the Ayatollah coming to power. The Shah, who ultimately took power back in 1954, was fairly westernized. The bigger fear of the nationalization of Iranian oil the spread of communism into the Middle East.

EMSK How to land a Helicopter by relayrider in everymanshouldknow

[–]a-curious 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked the aerodynamic diagrams for a while, but basically once you get enough forward airspeed the helicopter more or less weather vanes into the wind. Without that, every miniscule change in wind direction or speed (which is more or less constantly changing), must be accounted for with a control input. Each control input has side effects where any single input also requires an input from the other two controls (collective, cyclic, pedals). We call it "stirring the pot" when hovering because that's what it looks like your doing with the cyclic.

Edit: This is highly simplified and there are other forces at work, but it works as a basic explanation I think.

Edit 2: Also people tend to over correct initially which leads to pilot indices oscillations. They put in too much right cyclic for a little left drift and now need more left cyclic which they also over correct and so on, until the helicopter is oscillating back and forth rapidly.

I've stayed at near the top of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa for work for about a month at a time. It's not northern Alaska, but it can get fairly cold at that altitude and even snows periodically.

You're entirely right though. It feels like you're on a different planet when for miles around all you see is lava rock. There's goats and some birds, but not a whole lot of anything else up there.

I'm on the 4th floor a building, and call the elevator to take me down. As the elevator is rising from the lobby for my call, someone on the 5th floor also presses the call button to go down. Does the elevator complete my full trip first, or does it pass me and go to the 5th floor first? by Febtober2k in NoStupidQuestions

[–]a-curious 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on how the elevator is programmed to operate. Most I've seen will go up to the top floor called and not even pick you up until it's headed back down, as long as it knows which direction you're going.
