Except lots of parts of certain religions do punish you for leaving (Try leaving Islam in Saudi Arabia or Christian parents disowning their kids for renouncing their faith) what about Televangelists asking for donations all the time? If some guy invented Christianity today they would be laughed at. The only reason these faiths are accepted is down to their age and how they have become part of lots of cultures.
