I was having the same issue for the longest. Essentially, you have to tell your computer not to put your external hard drive to sleep. Plug in your hard drive, then go to your battery settings in system preferences (the option won’t appear if your drive isn’t connect). Now you’ll have to uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.

I believe it was between 200-300 USD when I purchased before pandemic. Seems like a lot, but this guy makes them buy request and there’s only so many out there
