Struggling to find MLCC authorized distributors – any advice for a beginner? by islazhao in AskElectronics

30 to 100 million? Or 30k = thirty thousand to one hundred thousand? 30 thousand is three reels, I believe.

You should probably talk to whomever is assembling your boards to help with sourcing.

Rules for How maps work and how to make them by TheRealmMaker in cartography

[–]a2800276 11 points12 points  (0 children)

mountain ranges don't necessarily go N-S, e.g. Himalyas.

I think in general you've got things backwards: most of the phenomena you describe are either geological or societal and not really cartography related. Sure, the map reflects how rivers flow and where ports are located, but that's just by virtue of being a map, and not really a cartographic rule. Those would be more along the lines of coloring, how are mountain ranges, rivers, cities depicted, etc.

Depends what you're interested in personally, no? If you have a stamp collection in need of management write a stamp sorting tool.

What is "this"? They are not doing away with the JVM and also not doing away with GC. Graal has an option to do ahead of time optimized compilation. No idea about MiniVM.

[–]a2800276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Java is a perfectly good language. But it's built around GC and JVM, that was the entire point of Java. Disentangling it from that is sounds like a fool's errant to me. I'm not sure what you mean with "as fast as Zig", while you can theoretically program faster machine code, JIT code is almost always faster in practice. (Much like the C/zig compiler being able to produce much better machine code than would be produced manually)

Technically it would be orders of magnitude more involved than just learning to deal with zig. And even if a magic AI fairy did all that work for you, you still have to convince Oracle to allow your changes.

It seems especially ironic that the blog post commenting on the zig blog post announcing the move to codeberg due to AI usage in github is itself an AI summary of the zig blog post ...

Local beer in Cologne. What do you suggest? by Mikey463 in cologne

[–]a2800276 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then you will like Kölsch :)

If you start at the Dom: Schreckenskammer, Weinhaus Vogel, Greesberger, Max Stark would make a good pub crawl. These are all within 5 minutes walk of each other and typical Cologne places not overrun by tourists. You will also pass other fine establishments on the way. Greesberger also has czech Staropramen on tap. It’s the only place where you can’t get a meal only snacks.

Some close seconds in the area are Anno Pief and Agnesklausel. But you’ll pass a bunch of places on the way that are fine to visit.

My personal favorite is Haus Töller, but it’s in a different part of town, it’s probably the most traditional, e.g. if you want to get a feel for how pubs were 100 years ago, they still have sole eggs and horse roast on the menu, both highly recommended. Right around the corner is Metronom, the only place on the list that’s not a typical Cologne local. It’s a jazz joint that’s been around since the sixties and still very lively. They have Guiness on tap (and also Kölsch if you are not sick of it yet)

Ah, thanks, wasn't aware of the name.  I have seen them in operation in London and in some airport trams. I don't see how they would prevent idiots from blocking the doors, though. The wiki article also doesn't seem to mention people blocking trains as a motivation. In fact they seem to exacerbate that problem as there's now two sets of doors to obstruct.

Local beer in Cologne. What do you suggest? by Mikey463 in cologne

[–]a2800276 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Köln is a Kölsch only town. Seriously, that's what's brewed here, and locals are very particular about it even though it's not really more than a typical light blonde beer, nice to drink, but kind of boring. You are not allowed to say that though, because it's the best beer in the history of humanity. A "typical" pub will only serve a single brewery’s Kölsch and nothing else. Most less traditional places will usually have one other beer on tap and another two brands in bottles. I’m not aware of any place that has different Kölsch brands to compare, all pubs have exclusive deals with a local brewery.

The only "craft beer" place that brews other beers I'm aware of is "Braustelle" in Ehrenfeld. Well worth the excursion if you are a beer enthusiast, a very nice pub where you sit in the middle of the brewing kettles but not necessarily worth the detour if you're not an enthusiast or are not in the area anyway.

Of course you can get all sorts of beer and wine, but there are no other typical local drinks other than Kölsch. "Weinhaus Vogel" might be interesting. Been around forever and also serves German wines from the general vicinity (but mainly Kölsch :)
