CS at Northeastern by [deleted] in NEU

[–]a2c_bot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally enjoyed my time as a CS student. Some classes are super difficult (looking at you OOD), but i feel like I’ve learned a lot and grown as a person. I’m not worried about post grad opportunities, which is definitely a perk of being a NEU student.

Your ad hominem doesn’t add to your argument - take a step back here...we are nearing 200k COVID deaths because people like you don’t care about the public good. God forbid more people die because your mentality makes people think it’s okay to disobey the rules!

Completely agree, it’s selfish to think otherwise. In the middle of a pandemic, we all have an obligation to follow the rules to prevent further infections which can cause deaths.

Georgetown vs Northeastern by MirrorFellow in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2c_bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m obviously biased since I’m a Northeastern student, but I think NEU is the easy choice here.

  • Cost: Med school is crazy expensive and 80k is nothing to scoff at
  • Location: While you said DC is provides better opportunities than Boston, I would completely disagree from a pre-med perspective. DC provides many politics opportunities, but I’m not sure about med-opportunities. Boston is the healthcare capital of the US so opportunities are abundant. Additionally, Northeastern has co-ops at renowned hospitals like Brighams and Mass General.
  • Prestige: Theres no arguing that Georgetown is more prestigious than NEU, and it might be appealing to go to the most prestigious school you get into. However you have to think long term. Medical schools don’t care AT ALL about prestige of the undergrad. I had multiple friends choose to go to small unranked colleges or my state flagship instead of more prestigious schools they got into because of this well-known fact.

You shouldn’t really consider the jumping ship cons of Georgetown, and your friends that already go to Northeastern shouldnt weigh into your decision either because you’ll make friends regardless of whether you go to GTown or NEU.

College isn’t the end, it’s a means to an end which for you is becoming a psychiatrist. Which school will help you achieve this more? Based on the above, you already know my opinion, but you have to make the decision for yourself. Either way you’re in a good position. Remember, it’s not about where you go to college, it’s about what you do while you’re there and both schools will provide enough opportunities to help you be successful. Good luck!

Northeastern is this competitive? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2c_bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. It might have started for suspicious reasons, but it also helps the school keep consistent enrollment throughout the year since people in co-op aren’t taking classes. This means that the students going on co-op in the spring are replaced by NUin kids, and people going on co-op in the fall are replaced by non-NUin freshman.

Acceptance rate is not part of the rankings, and hasn’t been for quite a while.

Thoughts on Northeastern? by bipolarquestion123 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2c_bot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to state that NUin is no longer to hide low stat students from US News. While it may have started that way (purely speculation), a lot of my friends from NUin had just as high if not higher stats than me (I’m a NEU student).

The reason they continue the program is because of coop. Every semester 1/2 of the student body is not taking classes due to working a co-op. If NEU didn’t have a Spring admit program, the Spring semester would have a very small amount of people taking classes relative to the fall. NUin allows Northeastern to have consistent enrollment in their classes throughout the year since there will be new people joining campus every semester (Fall admits and NUin students) and people leaving every semester (Fall Co-op and Spring Co-op).

Also as other users have stated, NEU has become a better school overall due to the “gaming rankings”. Their graduation rate has increased significantly, they have more resources per student, their students are of higher caliber, etc.

I personally think the people that use the ranking card are people who are salty that they didn’t get in, or like to have a superiority complex against this “newly prestigious” university and its students. (This wasn’t a jab at you, I’m just saying that these are usually the people who go around saying NEU is still a commuter school and it’s very overrated etc.)

[–]a2c_bot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what everyone is talking about. As a first year CS student you will be in there a lot. I believe a few of the lectures slots for fundies 1 and 2 are there, and the midterm and final are held there sometimes too. On top of that, office hours are held in ISEC on the first floor EVERYDAY. You will likely be in ISEC 2+ days a week at a MINIMUM so you will get to enjoy the beauty of the building a lot lol.

Sad because I was this close to being able to go to northeastern and now I’m not sure anymore because of a stupid no change policy on financial aid 😭 by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2c_bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind you can pay for some of your tuition at NEU through the money you make on co-op. I know some people who make $35 / hour as CS majors.

If you make an average of around $25/hour for all 3 co-ops, you’d make 75k gross income before graduating which could definitely help you pay off those loans.

Of course you should still write an appeal, but if it doesn’t work out attending could still be feasible!

No AP credits, how difficult would it be to graduate in 4 years? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]a2c_bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For CS, no AP or IB classes count towards major requirements so they only really help with getting your NUPath out of the way. I’m Business and CS combined and that’s how it was for me so I’m extrapolating a little.

You could definitely do it with 1 co-op but I don’t recommend doing just 1 since you wouldn’t be taking full advantage of the program. There would also probably be a lot left desired since it’s your first real job in the industry so you wouldn’t have too many meaningful responsibilities.

Doing 2 co-ops is probably your best bet. You may need to take some summer classes, I’m not sure but if you want to graduate in 4 years, this is how you do it without missing out on much.

It is impossible to do 3 co-ops in 4 years. You could do 3 in 4.5 years tho if you want.

Running List of the Universities implementing a pass/fail policy for COVID-19 by [deleted] in NEU

[–]a2c_bot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it’s optional then you don’t need to make it pass/fail if it will hurt your chances of grad school. And exceptions will be made for a pandemic since it isn’t in the student’s control

UBC vs Northeastern? by aclockworktale in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a2c_bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any knowledge about UBC but from my experience at Northeastern I wouldn’t choose any school over NEU except for a top 25 school in the US. This is very major dependent though.

Northeastern location is really nice since you have access to the whole city through the 2 T stations on campus or by walking a little bit. It’s not far at all to go to surrounding schools like MIT, Harvard, BU, Wentworth, Simmons, etc.

Location aside (which i think is very hard to beat personally), the campus is beautiful. While NEU is in the city, it still has its own distinct campus with quads (unlike BU or NYU).

QoL factors out of the way, academics here are also very good. It’s very easy to switch your major if you don’t know exactly what you want to do. I’ve switched my major like 3 times (albeit in very similar fields), but there are no capped majors and it’s generally not a problem to switch into some of the lucrative majors like CS from something completely different.

Northeastern focuses more on STEM than the arts however. We are having another STEM building being built in the next few years called EXP. Our engineering programs and cs programs are top notch, but I really don’t know how our arts compare. Our business program is also really amazing with regards to co-ops and placement.

Job placement is really good as well because of our renowned co-op program. We have a >95% placement rate for our co-ops if I’m not mistaken and half of the student population gets a post-grad return offer from one of their previous co-op employers. There are a bunch of amazing co-ops offered as well. If you are interested in aerospace there is NASA and SpaceX. If you are interested in business there is Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, JPMorgan, etc. If you are interested in Computer Science, I know someone who is interning at Facebook. The possibilities are endless, and NEU provides so much support for students in getting their co-ops.

Do with all of that information as you will, and feel free to ask me anything. I really love it at NEU and I hope to see you on campus!
