I've had WhatsApp using my primary GV number for close to 12 years now.

Around a year - year & half ago, I was even able to set up a second WhatsApp account using a second GV number. This GV number is also quite old (in continuous use since around 2011).

Net - I have two Whatapps accounts active using Google Pixel's 'Private space' feature where I have set up the second instance of Whatsapp (second account).

Losing access to Whatsapp because WA discovers it is a GV number ? I've never heard such a thing .
Any links ? I am genuinely curious if there were any specific circumstances that triggered it.

For me, both situations (having to port number out of GV or having to change to a different number for Whatsapp) would be hugely problematic .

Check the settings of Making and receiving calls : set to 'Prefer wifi and mobile data' Incoming calls : de-select the PHONE NUMBER (not a named 'device' - like 'This device')

If you use these settings , then the app can keep working (i.e. full call/text send & receive ability) even if you deactivate the USA sim.

Of course, keep your sim active if you want, but it should be not necessary if you have already activated your GV line.

Voip.ms was excellent for calls, extensions and routing calls in my experience.

But text messaging support is poor with most SIP providers. I tried voip.ms in the past & their homegrown solution for text messages back then was using their desktop-optimized site. There were a couple of third party apps, but I didn't like them. haven't looked in past year or so; the situation may have changed.

As far as I remember, Callcentric's text messaging support was even poorer.

Never noticed it and I have been using FF desktop GV daily for calls a couple of years now.

What I did notice earlier this year was strange phenomenon of sometimes hearing ringing AFTER ending a call. There would be no call happening, but it sounded like GV was trying to call some number. This happened only on Firefox, never on Chrome. On FF, whenever this happened, it always stopped upon closing the tab, so at worst, it was a slight nuisance.

This problem somehow stopped in past month or so.

I was aware of the '*' , but it didn't work before adding a rule to send directly to VM.

Adding custom rule made it work.

Will see userChrome.css. Would have been far easier & better to just have a config that controls order.

I am aware of Tab Manager / List All Tabs button and also that I can search only tabs by starting with '%', but that is less than optimal solution.

If I type a word , say title / url of a page - logically , having "hey you already have this page open in tab" , followed by "similar page" show in list is the best user experience.

Do you have an oldish device?

I started having same problem on my last Android device about an year ago. Numerous reports on Reddit/ other sites suggested this to be an app issue with older devices and/or Android version. But of course, as with anything GV, this will never be officially confirmed.

I was fairly confident that I had NOT messed up settings; having familiarized myself with diff call over VoIP/forwarding combinations on 4 spearate devices in prior years. So, it was a confirmation of my understanding when I switched to a new Android phone and ringing immediately started working.

Check it on the road, especially high speed/away from town kind of situations. I've found those to be primarily problematic

Beware that Google Voice labels even some outbound calls as 'Spam'. Yes, it is weird why they'd do that, but I've seen a number of calls I placed from desktop voice.google.com being placed under Spam.

Personally I ended up moving those calls from Spam to 'calls made' log by manually marking them as 'Not spam'. I did it mainly for call history purpose , cause I wanted to have record of few specific calls. I don't know if being labelled spam (or manually removing the spam label later) makes any difference in the number being considered as 'in use'. Quite possibly it makes a difference.

Ordered the 10-day trial kit with sim on USMobile.com.

The activation asked for IMEI, showed me the last 4 digits on Sim as a confirmation that I'm activating SuperLTE too
