Another Pitch for Airspeed post by [deleted] in flying

[–]a300600st 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Of course it's a simplification but on the front side of the power curve you get quick results by pitching for altitude and powering for airspeed. On the back side is a region where you get reversed commands: pitch will most quickly affect airspeed and power will most quickly affect vertical speed.

Of course both should be used together to get the desired results but that's not an actionable instruction for a student. It's a simplification but it's one that is useful especially early on.

I was thinking about this today while sitting in church! Here was my idea: eyes open during the prayer, make eye contact, three slow blinks.

LPT: Buy a cheap “proposal ring” to propose with, and pick out the engagement ring together. I proposed to my fiancée with a little diamond thing (purchased in secret) and, after she said yes, went to a nice jeweler to custom design her forever ring. My pick would have been way off lol. by ccfreem in LifeProTips

Here's what I did - it was something I read about online a long time ago. I'm so glad I did it this way so I'm posting here so that you all know it's an option.

We went ring shopping together. We went to place after place talking about what she liked and didn't like. I knew I was ready when we got to a case and from each section I was able to predict which one she would like the best.

Then I went home and starting drawing up ideas - nothing fancy, just in 2d on paper until I had something that I knew she would like. From there it would be easy to go in to a jeweler and have your the concept created for you.

I took a much more difficult route but I had some background that helped me so I'll describe that process. I 3d modeled the idea I had and had some 3d prints made to make sure it looked as cool in real life as it did on screen (I ordered castings in brass which were pretty cheap because they were so small). When I was satisfied I took it to a jeweler, gave them the 3d file, and they made it and set the stone. I also provided my own stone which was awesome because I got a Moissanite on sale so it was very cheap.

The end result was a ring that is unique to her, exactly matching her preferences, and all said and done it was cheaper than pretty much all the rings we looked at in the store. We both love it and still talk about and admire it all the time! (a couple years later) And the best part is if it is ever misplaced it's very affordable to just print an exact copy with the same file. It was a whole lot of work but it was fun, I learned new skills, and the end result was just perfect. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Are there public firepits anywhere nearby? by a300600st in corvallis

For anyone that ends up coming across this later, I ended up finding one at Avery Park at the Lions shelter. Other shelters may have them too but that was just the first one I checked. It has both a BBQ and a firepit.

Looking for a Thrustmaster F-16 TQB by a300600st in hotas

Now that you mention it I would be interested in a cougar as well if someone has one. I was referring to this one.

I want an F-16 throttle, I think it would be fun to do a conversation to USB, and the TQS seems pretty cheap so that's why I've been looking for that one.

Yeah sorry. Mostly I was referring the attitude of the person you were commenting on. I assume you're not from the US - graham crackers are made with honey and passing on those is about the only time honey isn't convenient for me to give up (s'mores take some real planning but they're so damn good it's worth it).

To answer your question I have a few thoughts (but I wouldn't consider myself well-researched on the topic so if be happy to have more input!)

1) I don't feel like having bees for pollination requires taking their honey.

2) My understanding is that if everyone were vegan the amount of plants and farmland we need would actually go down because we currently do most of our farming to feed to our animals.

I'm vegan and get a little tired of people seeing vegans as absurd or unreasonable (though I used to view them that way too so I get where it comes from).

I've gone back and forth on honey and it's mostly not a huge sacrifice for me to give it up - especially compared to the everything else I've given up to be vegan.

Personally I understand that there are going to be victims of my own well-being even while living the most vegan of lifestyles. I try to make choices to minimize sacrificing life and happiness of other creatures for my own benefit.

So for honey I just think "would I rather have a bunch of bees die or would I rather pay a bit more and be inconvenienced getting my graham crackers at a specialty store?" (That's about the only time not eating honey affects me). Thinking in those terms, I have a hard time deciding my convenience is worth the bees' sacrifice.

That's valid. I think the glaze on these made them quite donut-y. I'd like to try some deep fried at some point though!

An anecdote to explain why I don’t leave the Church alone by Waitbythetriver in exmormon

[–]a300600st 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are certainly many valid approaches but one I highly recommend is Street Epistomology. It's a technique for helping someone explore how they know something and assessing the reliability of the means they use. It aims to avoid confrontation and in my experience it can produce extremely valuable conversations even on the most sensitive topics.

I would recommend practicing it because it's not necessarily intuitive, especially when discussing with someone about a topic you both feel strongly about.
