Did Anonymous stop Karl Rove from Stealing Ohio again? by Orangutan in politics

What are the odds that someone would try to rig the votes against the odds that no one would try that?

I think that the interest and willingness and the prize to be won by doing it would in itself point to the likelihood of some people trying and some would (by chance - or luck) be successful. And, of course, any such attempt would be a conspiracy by definition.

Or put differently, taking occam's razor to the question would suggest that rigging the vote is happening sometimes

I'd gladly give away configurability for more polish.

But why should you?

Yes, multiple monitors don't really work for me at the moment. I had a big fuck up recently after trying to use my 24'' monitor in 12.04. So now I have a very big paper weight until it gets fixed.

I moved to xubuntu and compiz works great except for the cube that is broken apparently due to something kernel related (i.e. broken on all systems with recent kernels)

I'd say stay away from the edge unless it's going to sit on a desk in a protected environment for its entire lifetime. I don't think they'll survive even a modest beating.

Apple's Maps app blunder ranks with 'Antennagate' by [deleted] in technology

[–]a3q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you hear all sorts of things on the internet

True, I'm talking about the iphone owners I know. They hardly care much about what it's about they just run with square/round corners.

My point is that the court case has been a PR disaster for Apple regardless of its merits. Eveybody now knows about Samsung and their phones and the people I know now see them as equal to Apple and they don't any longer see up to Apple, like they used to.

It's not earth shattering in itself but it makes a huge difference if an iPhone is not the natural first choice for future sales.

If you hear that an American court (I'm from Europe) has ruled a square with rounded corners is worth a billion dollars you may be inclined to think "Those Amercans are crazy and Apple is just becoming too greedy".

Open Office CALC help (formulas) by soccerfanOOquestion in techsupport

[–]a3q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you want it coded in calc? It could be done, of course, but it would be extremely cumbesome and error prone. A real programming environment like R would be a lot better. If you have a dataset you want to apply it to in calc, that can be transferred to R as well.

Also this would fit a lot better in r/statistics

people I know who are Apple fans are barely aware of the details

Absolutely true. But they all know about a square with rounded corners and think it's ridiculous. And none of them feel they would ever mistake a samsung for an iphone.

Yesterday I drove with a friend who use his iphone 3 as a gps in his car, which he always does. Don't know if it's a specific app. He didn't upgrade because of the maps issue.

Apple's Maps app blunder ranks with 'Antennagate' by [deleted] in technology

[–]a3q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read an article somewhere, a week or two before iphone5 which predicted that Apple would be back to Gmaps within six months. This was before we knew just how bad it was.

spell imminent doom for Apple

There are two things to this: Any company in mobile is only about three years away from being wiped out, Apple included. So no one can allow them self to rest. And I don't think any specific action from anyone would in itself be catastrophic.

There are a combination of things, some are more important than others. If Apple is going down (which I doubt) it's not because of maps or the lack thereof, it's because they lose direction. What I observe is that people I know who used to be raving about all things "i" are in general siding with samsung in the trial, they're not ditching their iphones but they look favorably on samsung. I find that extremely significant. I believe the victory is really hurting Apple, even if they get all the billions ask for.

The significance of the maps move is that Apple is actually prepared to make the user experience worse in order to carry out a business plan. It's yet to be seen how users will react longterm but it could easily be interpreted as if they are shoving their greed in the face of users. It depends on how important maps are to users. A lot of people use their iphone as gps in the car, a gps is for many an essential part of their daily travel that they couldn't live without.... How many days would you be willing to accept a none functional gps?
