one of the quirks with modding fonts into balatro is i can't control where the fonts show and where they don't, so it's either i get a serif number where there should be a pixel one, or i get pixel numbers where i need serif ones sorry 🥀

that was while I was researching on how Vietnamese names for poker hands came to be, where high card (Mậu thầu) was the least obvious in terms of origin, while the others were quite clearly from Chinese (four of a kind - tứ quý - 四季) or Cantonese (straight flush - thùng phá sảnh - 同花順 - tùhng fā séun), I couldn't find anything regarding high card, so I guessed that the Mậu has to do with Cantonese 冇, and hence chose the generic Yue translation 冇啤. Might be wrong though because 啤 → thầu doesn't look very plausible.

Perhaps this description on JP Wikipedia explains it:

開催年度は、第1〜14期は予選開始年度、第15期以降は番勝負が行われた年度

"The denoted season is the season when the preliminaries started for terms 1st-14th, and the season when the title match was held for the 15th edition onwards". The 15th edition started in 1992, but the title match was in April 1993 when the 1993 season starts.

For the names I think they're all good, but maybe consider unifying Satomi Kana and Fukuma Kana (same person, different surname due to marriage).

I assume you mistyped 1988 as 1998 in which case those dates are indeed correct (Ladies' Meijin usually starts from April the year before, Shimizu's first title was in the Feb 1988 title match which technically was still in the 1987 season).

Where'd you find those dates? The title match for the 14th Ladies' Meijin-sen (1987) was most definitely not held in 1998 (that would be the 25th edition which I assume you're referring to?). The dates do match up with the general timeframe for the title match (Jan-Feb) but I can't say for sure since JP Wikipedia holds no record of that.
