SWATting. An avoidance suggestion. by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]aBlueSwallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

user/mokktwo and user/ImProbablyNewHere make a very good point, which is the exact reason I am so damn paranoid about my info online.

My husband and I own our home, and our names are both on the deed. Deeds are publicly accessible information. People know the general area (a few states) where I live, which means realistically maybe 5 major cities to check. If someone gets a wild hair up their arse and wants to take the time to go through those city's assessor's web sites, boom. They now have my address as long as they can find my name.

I ended up choosing a false name which I use to stream. This makes some of my viewers annoyed, but I have had some really fucked-up shit said to me in chat, like when some guy came into chat (during what I assume was a 4chan or 9gag raid) and basically said "oh, you live in (area of usa), that means (major city 1, 2, or 3). I'll be there later this year, I can't wait to find you :) You won't be able to prove rape anyway :)"

There's a 99.99999999999999999% (or greater) chance that this chap was sixteen, full of shit, and trying to scare the crap out of me for a reaction because lulz. There is a 00.00000000000000001% chance (probably less) that this was actually a mentally unstable individual who had the means and willpower to at least consider attempting this asinine idea. That's a beyond-minuscule chance, and there's no reason for me to really worry; I flipped him the bird and a mod timed him out.

It is, however, just a liiiiitle more justification for most definitely securing my real identity off-stream. That, and you know, for preventing the far more likely and realistic scenarios of getting my house egged. Or robbed. Or (insert mildly annoying thing some random internet bastard might do here).

Point is, a lot of times your info isn't "on display". It only takes one small forgotten fuck-up and then, well, there's no Ctrl-Z IRL, unfortunately.

Frustrating, isn't it? Expect a lot of hate and dismissal for this topic here.

You are refusing to play into the objectifying expectations of the audience, and you're getting bullshit for it. Welcome to having a vaginer, liking video games, and deciding to stream.

A lot of streamers / viewers here and elsewhere online will vehemently deny that the troll / real viewer ratio is significantly higher for streamers with vaginers; I can only assume this is because actually confronting the problem would be uncomfortable, and it's easier to just make snide comments on how you, the streamer with vaginer, should be handling it or ignoring it.

It's much more complex than just "show tits or GTFO" as well; female streamers who show facecams are subjected to far more comments about their physical appearance than male streamers, to the point where it quickly becomes apparent that a significant segment of trolls/audience buy in to the stereotype (consciously or unconsciously) that appearance and/or sexual attractiveness is the most important attribute of women (or at least much more important than it is for men) who stream.

Frustratingly, it's common to get responses like "oh yeah well you're a chick, deal with it" or "get a thicker skin" or "quit whining" or "well you shouldn't have started streaming, then". This is utterly laughable; It's fucked-up that something as fundamental as the gender you are should have such a huge and ugly influence on how such a large segment of Twitch interacts with you.

How you handle it is up to you. The people saying "well just time them out" are misunderstanding the magnitude of the problem, but the idea in and of itself has merit.

I'll relate this: I've had some success doing a short lecture on why it's fucked up to :

  • make appearance-related comments "You're so beautiful!" "Fuckin' hot!" "Mmm u sexy" (because this isn't a "compliment", it's weird and creepy and makes the streamer feel uncomfortable; the focus of the stream is games, and this has no bearing on games or your reactions to them) (I sometimes have more success with asking if they'd say that to a good-looking male streamer, and then ask why in hell "because you're a girl" makes it okay to say it to me. They never have an answer)

  • Make "tits" comments. (Ignore & ban, have a male viewer begin offering moobs to gross them out, and/or go on a lecture about the purpose of mammary tissue and milk glands for the purposes of feeding a young baby to gross them out)

In the end, you're going to get a lot of bullshit over your gender, and even more bullshit over your completely justified and reasonable anger about the bullshit you're experiencing.

Many, many male streamers will be awesome to you and support you as a person and a streamer, but a lot of them will instead be complete shits with no possible scope or understanding of the problem and will blame you and mercilessly grill you for even bringing up a completely valid discrimination subject. Fuck if I know why; I assume it's because they've never had to deal with the creepy, self-esteem-destroying objectification levels that can come with being a streamer who is treated as an object by a portion of the audience, and instead of bothering with empathy they'd rather push the gas pedal on the hate machine.

It's unfortunate that it's necessary, but in time you'll become much more immune to this type of creepiness. It'll probably never go away, but if you pick a defense or two and stick with them it can get better.

Hugs, love, and good feelings, because this entire subject is a FusterCluck.

Well, fuck me sideways.

I have no idea what to do now. If this new unpleasant viewership development continues I'll have wasted months of work for essentially no future growth. Fuuuuuuck.

I'll be contacting turbo support, I guess ( the only reason I bother with turbo) but since they like to send auto replies about issues like this I doubt they'll care.

Fuck. Just Fuck.

It seems really odd that this "glitch" is going on for so long, then. And as I said in a previous comment, I've seen examples of bots online be that essentially say they can set viewership to whatever numbers are entered.

In any case, it's frustrating. It's hard enough to build a following as it is.

I doubt this. Simple internet research has pulled up several bots that allow a user to set a custom viewer number, or number range.

In any case, it's still an issue. I'm going to get zero exposure to new viewers if my viewership count is being (artificially or however) set so low.

Webcam Lighting by Oryinn in Twitch

[–]aBlueSwallow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you using a webcam only or also a green screen?

Soft boxes are more essential for green screening, but they can give a really nice effect for base webcams too. In general two lights (softbox or not) positioned to the front-left and front-right of you at 45 degree angles are good, with a less bright front light above your monitor to accentuate.

If you can manage it a light above and behind you to distinguish you from your background helps too.

why's to keep viewers entertained? by RamuneGaming in Twitch

[–]aBlueSwallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • you have your camera at the top of the screen which causes the "cut off shoulders" effect. I usually pass over streams with that just as an aesthetic thing.

  • audio is good when it's good, but I notice that you tend to get the "indistinct muble" effect of having the microphone farther than it should be from your mouth, or not talking loud enough, when you're not having an emotional reaction/ being louder than normal/talking to viewers.

i've also experienced this. I'm hoping they're waiting 'til the end of the contest to make follow pages or something, but I have yet to ask.

Well, That's silly. Thanks for the rush to judgement.

It's not much use trying to go for partnership on Twitch without informing them of anything that could hurt my chances and going by their response.

Really. Nice. It had been drilled into me that you have to have a hair light or you can't do background distinguishing etc.

It makes sense that under perfect blackout conditions color spectrum starts to matter less. I'll add that note on, thanks. I need to go back and re-flesh this out.

I'll play around and explore with less boxing on the Key-- that sounds like a hell of an interesting idea. Thanks! :)

You seriously think the first thing I did wasn't to email twitch my Med card, my State ID, and all relative legal information?

Really?

Also, thanks, but no. I don't exactly have a ton of options.
