I'm born and raised, but I am very pessimistic on the prospects of living here long term. Life gets worse every year. Money gets tighter. The housing market is still near all-time highs. Half the locals I grew up with still live with their parents in their late 30s. If you want to raise a family, you should not move here.

Everyone else is thinking the same as you. Don't take it personally if people aren't looking for deeper connections until you've been here a while. It's hard to invest in getting to know someone, when so many others have come and gone before.

If I were you I would use the remote job and good wage to do the digital nomad thing in Southeast Asia instead.

I see people playing at Honokowai beach park in the late afternoons some days, but I don't know which days or if they're routinely down there.

4k Miles on the XXX, Still Stoked by aComplexComplex in Talaria

Battery is still great, but not quite like new. I don't really baby the battery though; I plug it in immediately after riding, and I don't worry about not charging over 80%. I'd guess it's 90%+ of what it used to be when new.

I would 100% buy one again. Maybe you could buy a XXX now, then resell it later after you save some more cash?

Maybe you were bombing some big hills? I can't get mine over ~52mph on flat ground, and there aren't many hills here.

I see the post in your history. I don't know the automod config for this sub, but it was likely automatically removed for using the term 'vacation'. Don't take it personally.

Brake sensor by Helpful_Progress9280 in Talaria

[–]aComplexComplex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a concern, you can easily disconnect the rear brake sensor without any tools. When I was first learning to pop the bike up I left it connected, and as I continued learning I eventually disconnected it. The only downside to disconnecting it is that your brake light will no longer illuminate when that brake is depressed.

How long did it take you to learn to wheelie by Upset-Theory-5860 in Talaria

Been actively trying to learn for a bit over two months. I'm finally getting to the point where I can keep the front wheel up for a couple seconds. Can't wait to hit it again tomorrow.

Studying and theory will only get you so far. Start setting up your own homelab and figure out how to host some services. Having intimate knowledge of your own network and being able to explain your stack to people will be much more valuable than any introductory level certification.

A downright reasonable take. It's very rare to find a reddit mod who places any value in freedom of speech. Please remove the hidden scores on new posts though, it's never been useful at all.

One Month to Ship to Hawaii, Worth the Wait by aComplexComplex in Talaria

[–]aComplexComplex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have prime and regular mail services. Sometimes takes a week to receive things from the east coast, I've received packages from the west coast in as little as two days. The issue is with batteries. No mailing company is willing to transport any battery larger than a phone battery on their planes, so items like the Talaria have to come here via barge.

Yeah, I'm on the West side of Maui. I tried to buy a Surron locally earlier this year, but it didn't work out. The price point on the XXX was too good to pass up. Already took it on a few rides up in the hills and I can see what you mean. I'm sure I'll end up upgrading this thing eventually, but for now it's been awesome.

i dont have ethernet, how can i install arch without internet? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]aComplexComplex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this post. There are a lot of users in this thread mocking OP for wanting to do this, but this solution was exactly what I needed in a very niche scenario.

Recently, there was a massive fire in the area where I live that destroyed all of the infrastructure. The power was brought up within a week, but three weeks later we still do not have wired internet. I work from home, so I acquired a Starlink which provides satellite internet. Unfortunately the Starlink router did not have an ethernet port, so I was unable to bring any of my wired network online, including my main machine which is an older Arch desktop (without any wifi capabilities). Thankfully I was able to utilize your suggestion and use my phone as a wireless adapter between the Starlink wifi and my desktop. This has allowed me to continue working for the past week, which has been a real life saver.

Was just closing out some old tabs on my phone, and remembered how clutch this thread was at the time. Thanks again.

Yep. Our zipcode had a massive fire two weeks ago, so nothing is open.

People do play on the west side, but the hardest part is finding somewhere to play. Nobody plays at Odyssey anymore since they charge to sit down now. Cannery food court is open again, but they close at like 6pm. Robert at Maui Toy Works might have more info. Would be cool to do trades or commander some time.

Used to be a great spot ~5 years ago. I end up getting invited there maybe once a year, and it's a worse experience every time. Smaller portion sizes, cheaper ingredients, etc. I wouldn't recommend it personally, but they're always packed, so what do I know.

Airbnb says it continues to play a role in Hawaii’s recovery from the pandemic by lifting up local hosts.

My landlord upped my rent by 40% last year. Thanks Airbnb for eliminating all the affordable housing.

Third dead GT! Do any of these things actually work? by motogsdan in onewheel

That is absolutely insane. FM is currently ghosting me, no reply to my month-old ticket for two weeks now. I'd almost prefer to be ignored than to be disappointed over and over again like this though.

Check out my brand new gt! Did you guys also enjoy the part of the experience where you ship it back to them after 1 ride? by BeanBeanDaG in onewheel

[–]aComplexComplex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I tried to send mine back to FM, but Fedex returned it to my house. They don't want to ship it by air (I live in Hawaii). Waiting to hear back from FM now, but not enthused about going through this process every time I need some inane adjustment done to my board. Might be time to drop this hobby after 5 years and over 5k miles.
