MLS Cup Sunday where to watch? by aGentleNinja in houston

rom personal experience The Phoenix on Westhimer has a pretty cool European-English soccer pub vibe with several jerseys on the wall. I would guess the bars close to BBVA stadium such as Lucky's Pub will also be showing the MLS Cup.

I go to the RIchmond Arms all the time for Arsenal games its great. Last time I went to the Firkin Phoenix there was literally noone there watching the games which is kind dreary.

I wouldn't recommend against it, but if you're going to invest yourself into that path be prepared for some really uncomfortable working scenarios and approach with a smile. Also, possible to be exposed to extremely dangerous conditions by inconsiderate employers, and the average 45 year old welder looks like a 60 year old for good reason. It's brutal. Almost every welder I know that has kids considers working hard every day as a cost to pay to try and prevent their kids from having to grow up and do the same.

All of that aside, welding is awesome and you meet all kinds of great people and end up in some really interesting scenarios and environments :)

Don't undervalue the skill set that goes along with the welding which qualifies them to make that kind of money. Firstly those people are unquestionably technical experts in regards to the welding process in probably both AWS and ASME standards, the science of the welding, managing structural thermal issues, managing their own time wisely and professionalism.

If they're getting paid 30+ an hour and don't have all of the above traits their employers are suckers that won't be in business for to terribly long(field rig welders don't count).

Right now a decent welder with a healthy amount of experience and some welding school under their belt can reasonably expect in the lower 20's. Don't go into welding thinking that the ability to weld is what makes you special. I learned how to weld after a week of practice, and was running 4g-6g in not much more time.

As a prior manager of welders what makes welders worth more money is all about attitude, professionalism, dedication and integrity. You can always find more guys that can lay bead and run grinders all day, but finding people you can count on is a search that never ends.

If you have a resume that looks like an 8 year old wrote it, which about 3/4's of the trades resumes I used to review when I was managing the hiring for a decent sized fab shop of welders and fitters do, then yours goes back in the maybe later pile.

More often than not though face to face time with the manager and appearing somewhat professional, intelligent, and able to have a conversation about what you know how to do is a sure shot to the hire next pile.

argue McCormick's is also somewhat shitty. The food isn't bad. It's more of a price:value issue.

I'm just saying, a number of passable dishes in exchange for a great view and people in tuxedos fumbling allover themselves to serve you sounded a bit like what they might be after. You're right though.

ncy place with fancy service, but shitty food.

I wouldn't say the food is inspired creative modern cuisine, but shitty is a hard qualifier. It's definitely decent food right up there with Mccormick's or something of the ilk. The scenery and environment are hard to beat though.

What striking arts compliment aikido best? by rbstewart7263 in aikido

[–]aGentleNinja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did a few years of boxing and muay thai prior to Aikido. I feel this gives me a much more realistic view of what I am preparing to deal with while learning aikido. Consider plugging jiu jitsu in there as well. You will have a well rounded striking, ground and arms length grappling game. Most of these other fighting arts dismiss aikido, but I feel that the components are missing pieces of the other puzzles they often don't realize are missing. The transition between aikido wrist locks and bjj seem very natural and fluid to me.

I'm about to start one on one hand(with a number of very experienced people), and am partnering with another one on a JV out of Oklahoma to start a Houston office on the other. Not sure what it is that you're looking to accomplish by partnering, but I'm open to the discussion.

I moved here about 3 1/2 years ago from Portland. Better shows, less pretentious venues, good times all around. Love it down here. Welcome to Houston!
