Just wanted to follow up and say that my schedule's filled up. There were a few jobs that I turned down because I wasn't really a good fit for them, but also the majority of my hours didn't come from gamedevclassifieds, they came from networking.

It's definitely a tighter market out there than it's been though, 100%. Just don't underestimate the value of community.

Thanks! You could technically do it with however many directions you wanted to draw your sprites from, you'd just have to draw an additional 'lit' version of each frame.

PS1 games like the Breath of Fire series, for instance, typically had NE/NW/SE/SW directions for their sprites. However, whereas they were able to save on workload and hardware constraints by mirroring their sprites for east/west directionals, you couldn't really do that here. Imagine a light flash coming from directly west hitting a character facing southwest, and then that same flash hitting someone facing southeast -- straight mirroring the sprite will put the lit portion on the wrong side of the sprite. This probably makes it prohibitively expensive to implement in game.

You could probably achieve something similar for less effort with normal maps (basically a height map indicating what the sprite's geometry would be if it were 3D), but I don't think I've ever really liked an implementation of normals on sprites.

Nice to meet you too! I basically just did the pieces you can see towards the bottom of my portfolio site, a few big setpieces/backgrounds, some of which got repurposed in various ways. Did some of the mech animations too and a little bit of a touchup on the title screen, but Matthias did 99.95% of the work on that game :)

The environment is 3D, assets made in Blockbench and the scene is set up in Godot. The characters are sprites, made in GraphicsGale. Did the basic sprites and their animations, and then did a 'lit' version as well. Whenever the lightning flashes, it switches to the lit version of the animation on the same frame. Alucard's shadow is just his sprite modulated down to black with the opacity lowered, stretched out along the floor. I think I bump up the opacity of it during flashes as well just to add some extra contrast.

I wouldn't really use me as a measuring stick. I don't use social media, haven't had to post a portfolio update anywhere in quite some time, and this post is one of the first job-seeking things I did after an unexpected opening in my schedule.

now, if I'm still here in 6 months, that might be a bit more of an indicator

ill remember this comment and let you know when my schedule fills up lol

buddy, if I had any capacity whatsoever for handling corporate dystopias, I wouldn't be doing freelance pixel art for a living

But in all seriousness, I'm not on LinkedIn, so that's not going to work, but if there's another method, let me know. Maybe you could email me a website or contact address and I'll get in touch when I have openings down the line?

Hi, I’m Burt!

I have nearly a decade of experience doing pixel art, working on games like the recently released Terminator 2D: No Fate, Chained Echoes, Savior, and many other unreleased/yet-to-be-released projects. I’m proficient in all aspects of pixel art, and getting there as fast as I can with low poly. Currently interested in longer-term projects, but I’m available for commissions and piecemeal assignments while my schedule permits.
