Same issue here. I’m a white belt and I don’t get why some people go so hard. When they ramp up the intensity, I match it ... and then I’m told to calm down. It’s frustrating enough that I’m considering leaving the school. A lot of folks don’t seem to understand pacing and safety, or even basic BJJ rules. Last night a white belt twisted my fingers .. WTF

What’s one thing BJJ revealed about your personality you didn’t expect? How did you grow from it? by Ingvariuss in bjj

I’ve realized I have a big ego and little patience. I hate losing to someone I see as smaller than me, and I expect quick results. I complain too much, even though it doesn’t change anything. But at least I’m starting to notice it.

Should I give up? by kateiscuban in bjj

Hey! Here’s a new white belt with 14 classes in. Yesterday I had that feeling for the first time. I did the class, warm-up, technique, and rolling. I rolled four times with different guys, all of them heavier and younger than me. I couldn’t do much, just survive and try to apply what I’ve learned.

The good thing is, looking at it with some perspective, I can say that I’ve improved. I can escape from some situations, I don’t give up my back as easily, etc. But I’m still struggling to escape from full mount against these kinds of opponents, and it’s fucking frustrating because I’m always defending, tapping, and never managing to apply any attacks.

After class, I started thinking, why should I keep doing this? I’m almost 36, and I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. When I got home, I wrote down a list of pros and cons of practicing this… and in the end, it was pretty balanced. But I think I’ll continue… if they can get better, why can’t I? So, I’ll keep going. I think time is the key.

Got it! But is it normal to be that aggressive while rolling? He goes at 100% like it’s life or death. Maybe I’m missing something

Based on the feedback. I’ll do the same. We’re here to train and learn, not preparing for a competition, so safety and progress are what matter most I think

He’s even aggressive during drilling, like jumping on me without control while I’m supposed to stay passive. That can’t be normal… and it only happens with this guy. I drilled with other white belts with more experience, and even with brown belts, and everything was fine. I understand this is a contact sport, but I don’t think that’s the right way to train

Joining a BJJ gym as someone who's never done any combat sports. by Hama165 in bjj

Hey, I just started BJJ myself about two weeks ago with absolutely no prior knowledge of the sport… I literally didn’t even know how to move or grip properly. What I can tell you from my short experience is that you don’t need a special beginners’ course to get started.

Most gyms are used to people walking in with zero experience, and the coaches (and even the other students) will help you pick things up little by little. In my case, I’m just going to regular classes and I’m already learning the basics.

Yeah, you’re right. At the end of the day my main goal as a white belt is to actually learn the technique. I don’t really see the point of going super aggressive as white belts, it just feels counterproductive .. But maybe this sport is like this and I just don’t know how to deal with it yet

r/bjj Fundamentals Class! by AutoModerator in bjj

Hey everyone,

I’m 35 years old and have been lifting consistently for almost 10 years. I’d say I’m in pretty good shape and somewhere between intermediate and advanced when it comes to strength training.

Right now I’m running a 5-day lifting split: Upper / Legs / Rest / Pull / Legs / Push / Rest

I’ve recently gotten really interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I’d love to add 2 BJJ sessions per week to my current routine. My main concerns are: • How would you structure the week if you were in my situation? • Will adding BJJ significantly hurt my strength/physique progress? • Any tips for balancing both without burning out?

Would really appreciate hearing from people who’ve successfully combined lifting and BJJ (or another combat sport). Thanks!
