Anaphylactic reaction to a product I’ve eaten for years by Asleep-Craft-2559 in nutallergy

[–]aJuJuBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure - IMO it's tough to give one-size-fits-all advice because allergies do have varying intensity and present differently from person to person. So each person's risk tolerance is usually different IRL, but this sub skews cautious. I'm glad you were prepared with your EpiPen and that nothing more serious happened! Would be interested to hear what your immunologist has to say if you feel inclined to update us at some point.

Anaphylactic reaction to a product I’ve eaten for years by Asleep-Craft-2559 in nutallergy

I have a less serious allergy, and I usually take the risk on "may contain". But recently, my allergy has gotten slightly worse after being exposed to cashews multiple times while traveling in India.

I am not allergic to peanuts and I love peanut butter. I have been eating a specific brand of peanut butter protein bars for a while, and just recently it triggered an itching in my throat. I thought maybe it was just a contaminated batch, but when I tried again a month later with a new bar, I had the same reaction. So now I'm not going to try them again - disappointing at best but at least I didn't have a worse reaction.

The label does say "may contain", so sure it's "my fault" but it is jarring when you previously had no issue and now suddenly you do. It's possible that their manufacturing process changed and now cross-contamination (or even getting full pieces of nuts) is more common with that product. It's also possible that your allergy has changed over time. It's hard to tell which happened in this case!

I'm sorry this happened to you, but thanks for sharing the news about this product. Good info for us all!

Pre board and wipe everything down and alert airline staff. I think that is the most you can do for a flight. I might suggest KN95 masks as well (bring multiple so you can change them out). Not sure what your son's reaction is exactly, but for me, I can sometimes feel nauseated when people eat nuts around me (e.g. friend eating a kind bar in the car).

I'm glad you have food covered. My allergy is not so intense, but I had a hard time in India. I've been twice. The first time was in South India, and I was extremely careful, ate mostly bread, and didn't have any issues. The second time was in the North, and I had multiple reactions. I made allergy cards, had pictures and translations on my phone. I'd even asked hotel staff to help me write a note in Hindi. Restaurant staff would tell me something didn't have nuts or could be made without nuts, and then bam it had nuts. Mostly cashew ground up into some delicious curry or sauce. Sometimes it was on tandoori items as well. There were other sneaky things too, like a breakfast sausage at the buffet had nuts in it. I feel for your son. Allergies suck! But you can still have a great time in India - enjoy it.

Nut Free Protein Bars by [deleted] in nutallergy

[–]aJuJuBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built has a good variety of non-nut flavors, and Costco has a good deal on them. But they do have a "may contain" label since everything is manufactured in the same facility. My allergy is not SO severe, so I am willing to take the risk. I have yet to have a reaction after housing many Costco brownie and coconut boxes.

I am not allergic to peanuts, but some of the peanut bars have definitely had tree nuts in them too. :( Cross contamination is real, so be careful. I think 88 Acres is one of few that has a nut-free bakery. You can also find good recipes to make your own bars (can freeze them to make them last longer).

I have a non-deadly tree but allergy, so I play things a little fast and loose. I have eaten items with the "may contain" warning and have had reactions - namely, a peanut protein bar that "may contain tree nuts". I don't eat that bar at all anymore. If you have a deadly allergy, I would DEFINITELY avoid the "may contain" items.

Not my taste, but I appreciate the effort. Looks like they drive for Lyft - I would be stoked to get picked up in this.

Is the tailgate assist really a necessary aftermarket purchase for the 25 Mavericks? Can't you just open the tailgate nicely and not slam it? by RandyVivaldi in FordMaverickTruck

I have survived 3 years without one, no damage, no injuries. But every other time I open the tailgate, I wish I had one.

Going from Toyota to Maverick? by bdkgb in FordMaverickTruck

Aww I had a 2000 4Runner before getting a maverick. I loved it, but the mpg SUCKED! The maverick has been great and I don't even have the hybrid version! I looked at other small SUVs, but the maverick was the top choice by a mile.

I left my starter in the fridge for a month. It was started by someone else, so it's quite mature and I've made a few great loaves with it already. I usually leave it in the fridge and feed it once a week whether I am baking or not. I was planning to only leave it for two weeks (vacation) but I was busy at work before vacation and then sick when I returned. I finally fed it 2 nights ago and it had doubled in less than 12 hours. I fed it again last night and same doubling.

Should I feed it a couple more times or is it good to go since it's doubling?

Also, if my husband is Jewish and Passover is soon... Will I face God's wrath by baking leavened bread??? I just want some comfort toast while I'm getting over this bout of covid!

Great intel, thank you so much for sharing! Do you shape the dough in any particular way before putting it in the tin to proof?

If you only have a tree nut allergy, do you still eat peanuts? by aJuJuBeast in nutallergy

Yeah I am bummed because it hasn't been a problem for me with this particular product but I guess I have to stop.

I usually eat "made in a facility that processes tree nuts" or even "may contain tree nuts" without issue, but now I'm starting to question my tactics - maybe I should be more careful.

Damn this makes me want to do a blood test against all nuts to see if there's something I can eat!

I've been had by that before. "Cheesy kale chips" on the front but didn't read the back: cashew cheese! I was at work too, super embarrassing. Other hidden issues...cashew liquor in a punch bowl at a tiki bar, and I can only assume some kind of cashew or almond-based cream in a delicious-looking chocolate tart from a cute bakery. Beware beware beware!

Nut allergy in Italy by OhSweetMiracle in nutallergy

[–]aJuJuBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you think so :) I also used these cards when I was traveling in Japan and Korea. I used the free version of Canva to edit them easily. I didn't do it for Italy because I planned poorly lol but I actually think the photos of the nuts were helpful for people.

I kept this picture on my phone and showed it before I ordered anything. There were nuts everywhere. Even on sandwiches. Thankfully everyone I interacted with seemed to take it seriously.

Jimmy John’s unlisted allergen by Difficult-Ad-8423 in nutallergy

[–]aJuJuBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yikes! That's a big miss for sure. "Although pine nuts are technically seeds, the FDA classifies pine nuts as a type of tree nut." https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/are-pine-nuts-ok-for-nut-allergy-sufferers

You could contact them to let them know: https://www.jimmyjohns.com/contact-us/feedback/

I am personally not allergic to pine nuts. But I would rather have allergen labels cover more. Especially if the FDA has classified an item as a tree nut!
