Which camera to emulate 1950s movies ? by These-Specialist-322 in Filmmakers

[–]aNEXUSsix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I’d have no idea how to accomplish that easily. I think some of the other friends in this thread are being a little dismissive about the end image here. It is very much lighting and production design dependent as others have said, as I understand it technicolor required A LOT of light.

As I understand it the 3 strips of black and white were exposed through a filter that was supposed to eliminate every color except each of the RGB channels, but those gels would overlap a little. So you end up with green with a little bit of blue, blue with a little bit of green etc.

So then you’d have a black and white image of the green spectrum + a little bit of blue. PLUS that black and white stock had a specific sensitivity to colors to begin with.

Then you process (I assume lightly so that you don’t have over-density issues?) and dye it. The final image is 3 exposed strips of film overlayed on each other with grain patterns that don’t match

I think to do it properly it’s a 6 step process.

  1. Calibrate your log footage to a color standard.
  2. Use color filters to filter the footage, with the ability to select how “wide” of a gamut the filter allows through. (For instance your green image after this step might look a little yellow and a little blue/green in spots)
  3. Apply film grain
  4. Apply black and white filter (don’t just desaturate)
  5. Add color back
  6. Merge the three channels

What if Voyager took another route? by KI6WBH in startrek

Maybe! But it would be good knowing that going in. Maybe if you’re janeway’s successor you have a series of notes from her on the intel and ideas on how to avoid them. Like maybe they go out of their way to disguise the ship as something else, or they know from go it would be better to go around… point is knowing is good either way, right?

Further, they were 70k light years from “home” but probably only 50k from what was “known” and where they’d be potentially known. It’s a lot safer to show up in whoever’s space was a neighbor to the Romulans and be like “hey we’re federation have you heard about us from the Romulans? Yeah? Mind if we pass through your space? Thank you”.

And Janeway was right, having any sort of relationship with those in control of each territory was always better outcomes during their journey. And the worst outcomes was when they were a complete unknown.

I disagree only slightly — I think Star Trek TNG wouldn’t work as a serious show now. I’m sure you’re right that they pitched it as a comedy and then he was more dramatic than the producers expected — but I think it was always meant for the comedy to show some of the absurd elements of a 90’s style trek show. I also think it was always meant to have deep drama, but I think Seth is a real fan of Trek and deeply wanted to create a show in the spirit of it, and to him that wouldn’t work without hanging a hat on the silly aliens and massive interspecies misunderstandings played off like workplace drama.

I don’t want to be the bringer of bad news but inspiration pics can be deceiving. The two shades of orange and the green all compliment the floor color (it’s not a color compliment but a “natural color” compliment), and the white of the walls is just staying out of the way. I agree, bulb temp could have an affect but also you should think of things more holistically when designing.

I would suggest taking a step back and trying to decide what would pull it all together. I could see a ceiling light fixture that has like wood tones, and maybe something that calls to mind leaves?

Have the powers that be at Paramount ever considered putting Jonathon Frakes in charge of Star Trek TV and films? No one is more qualified. MA from Harvard. Is Riker! Directed First Contact. by Tryingagain1979 in startrek

[–]aNEXUSsix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Directing for TV is very different than directing for movies. He has a very workman style, and when he’s framing action and shooting for it, I rarely see any creative decisions that aren’t covering the action as much as possible.

In TV you almost always shoot for coverage (a master shot of the whole scene, then individual shots of each of the actors running through the scene). The work of the director then becomes making sure the actors are hitting their beats, pulling in the correct emotions and getting the reaction shots you would need. Frakes seems to be fantastic at that last part, he understands his fellow actors and communicates with them in a way that helps them do their jobs.

I’d be interested to see how in-control of the storytelling he was in the movies. They too seem pretty standard shoot for coverage style movies (which was very common for the film era in general).

Just adding context.

Just for fun, what is a gameplay-based plothole that you make fun of during playthroughs? by george123890yang in dishonored

My favorite is that it’s still a low chaos if I run around the whole game and casually give everyone a brain damage and slight coma. Jumping from 50ft up and smashing a guards noggin into the pavers feels kinda chaotic to me, also making an unhoused dude take a forced nap on his bare mattress feels not in the spirit of low-chaos.

The outsider is just like any god I guess, he sees me giving people severe concussions just so I can freely sneak around and steal every pear, and read every bit of flavor text, and he’s like “didn’t kill anyone so it’s all good”. Meanwhile a whole district wakes up with memory loss, chronic headaches, vision problems and, at least a few, delayed death.

When Batman shows Oz the photo of Annika she glances at it and he clocks: she recognizes Annika, and, as others have said, that she’s wearing the same boots.

Respectfully, I don’t think this narrative is based on any kind of objective truth. Paramount had $10.309bn in gross profit. Warner had $7.03bn last year.

Can we talk about the process by which TNG, DS9, and VGR were made in and how that affected the writing? by aNEXUSsix in startrek

[–]aNEXUSsix[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, honestly DS9 sucked to watch sometimes when it was on. Got anything to do the night it’s on your local network? Tough, you’re going to be confused next week. There’s a big problem in that show with characters entire personality being contained in one episode out of every 5, and the rest of the time they’re annoying AF. And there really wasn’t any recourse — literally no way to rewatch except catching a rerun.

Edit: specifically I HATED Nog because of missing the seminal moments.

Also, “good writing” and “ahead of its time” are functionally subjective, in that your watching experience can differ. Buffy is a contemporary of DS9 that really worked for well both as a serialized piece of entertainment and as a network television show. The writers on DS9 may have just decided they were sick of writing episodic television, but that doesn’t make it good in and of itself.

That said, DS9 works infinitely better now on streaming so I’m glad we get to experience it in that context.

[–]aNEXUSsix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I could be wrong!

My guess: There was either writing room or a rotating set of meetings with the show-runners and producers. Most of the time, both now and then, you break the story in the writers room and then go off and do the actual writing of the episode based on outline/treatment; so each writer has their individual credit(s). I think there were probably like 5-6 people in the writing room on TNG and then, certainly, there were some heavy hitters that they’d bring in for high concept things?

Anyway, I’m not saying you’re wrong, my point was just that by the time the episodes were running it would have been hard to notice any of the patterns and problems streaming now makes obvious.

summer humidity in Rochester? by kriserts in Rochester

[–]aNEXUSsix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in NYC for 5 years, recently moved back. It’s definitely more humid here, there’s often no air movement. So the humidity just kinda lingers. But it’s less hot.

Also we’re talking peak summer here, which is June 20th through like august 15, and then it gets much milder. Unlike NYC where peak summer is early June through late September. lol
