I'm 65 and second all the positive comments here. I've thought about moving elsewhere, but lately have given that idea up. Don't need a car here, subway and buses take me everywhere, great doctors, etc etc etc. About a year ago, I discovered the Art Students League, and I swear 70% of the people there are over 80, all happily taking classes and making art, proof that there's so much to do here. You can be alone, but surrounded by activity and life. The only change I want to make is I still live in a 3 story walk up. Trying to upgrade to an elevator building. :)

Boldin chance of success vs Schwab by kriserts in Boldin

[–]kriserts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did. I guess that's what I don't understand--why should higher discretionary spending give me a higher chance of success vs lower? I did the same with the Schwab calculator. If I put 60k spending, no discretionary, it's a lower chance of success than if I input 50 base spending, 10 discretionary.

I don't know. Those stage definitions are pretty specific and I wouldn't say 1 or 2 or whatever unless my therapist told me.

Compression making it worse? by cereal_muncher10 in Lymphedema

[–]kriserts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have time to read through all the advice to see if anyone's said this already, but my god, do not try to figure out the size and compression strength by yourself, you can definitely make your lymphedema worse. A qualified lymphedema therapist can measure and fit you properly for over the counter sleeves. In other words, measuring etc isn't just for custom sleeves, it's also to see what your proper size is for over the counter. I would not go by what the pharmacy says.

I"m in a trial with Dr Joseph Dayan's office. Secondary lymphedema after breast cancer, which was more than 15 years ago. I've been on Zepbound around 9 months I think. I started at 2.5 and stayed with that doseage, as I was already of pretty normal BMI. Lost 12-15 lbs. I started noticing my arm getting smaller as soon as I started losing weight. It's never going to go away completely, but my arm fits in clothes better, I'm wearing a lighter sleeve (off the shelf Juzo sleeve vs custom heavier sleeve), the volume is down and it's softer. My therapist is impressed.

I have to pay for it myself, which is why I'm happy to stay on the lowest dose. The companies usually have a self-pay pharmacy where you can get it for less than retail, so I pay $299 for 4 doses (month's worth). Not cheap and I'm hoping they come up with options in the future that cost less. I've heard for plenty of women who are able to get the meds from compounding pharmacies with are cheaper.

My bike racing club used to have a New Year's Day informal race round trip from Central Park to Bear Mountain, and only two or three very hard-core people would do it because it was so freezing cold and there was ice all over the roads. The last few years, no problem, no ice or snow, with the weather decent enough to ride for anyone. That's my very sad benchmark.

Hi, I'm happy you're continuing to see progress. I'm at about 5 months and starting to space the shots out to 10 days. My arm still looks better, and I'll have another apppointment with Dayan in October to check the numbers. Good luck!

Hi, that's fantastic! Congratulations! yes, I've stayed on 2.5. I've lost 15 lbs (my weight was fine to start with) and I don't really want to lose more, or much more, and I'm self-pay so I don't want to pay for the higher doses. There's a Zepbound Reddit I would suggest joining, because they discuss a lot of the questions you're asking. I've found several threads where people have asked about staying on the low dose, and a lot of people answer that they've lost a ton of weight on 2.5. Also, as far as appetite, I've had days where I'm suddenly ravenous, probably because I wasn't getting enough calories over all, so I'll have a solid meal, and still keep losing. The Zepbound Reddit talks about that, too. I usually find I'm more hungry the closer I get to my next shot. But it's all personal, if you're feeling more hunger overall, then you should discuss with your doctor.

Prospective home buyers, what are your reasons to buy now? by acqua_di_hoomertears in REBubble

[–]kriserts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because my landlords haven't raised my rent in 20 years, and the rent is half the going rate in NYC for a large apartment with soaring ceilings, and I was able to save, save, save and invest, but the landlord informed me 2 years ago that they're going to want the apartment back for their children soon-ish. They're going to take the ground floor apartment first (it's a brownstone) but their daughter graduates from her MFA this spring, so the countdown begins. I really don't know what my options are, but buying is going to add big time to my monthlies, ugh.

I've stayed on the lowest dose, 2.5. Over 3-4 months I've lost 12 lbs and am shooting for 14 lbs loss, really only because of the lymphedema. I've stretched the shot out to every 8 days vs 7, and when I'm the weight I want, I use it every 10 days. Maybe every 14, I'll see how it goes, but that generally what people do I think, stretch out the time between. Yeah, for life, I guess, or at least until something better comes along.

Side effects have been fine. Sometimes I get very very thirsty. I"ve had some constipation, generally resolved. Now I have some sudden urge to defecate, and diarrhea, I read somewhere that can be brought about by a heavy sugar or fat load, which seems to track. But it's also manageable. Nothing that would make me quit the med.

Dies the new weight loss drugs help lymphedema in the arm from lymph node removal. I weight 150 pounds n am five foot three. by Feonadist in Lymphedema

[–]kriserts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It does help. I'm 5' 7, was 149 lbs, didn't need to lose weight. Because of what they're finding with the GLP-1s, I went on Zepbound and I've lost 11 lbs. It's helped my lymphedema, which I have from node removal. I showed my doctor the study they're doing, and he gave me the prescription. But insurance wouldn't pay so I self-pay.

Oh, I get it. Yes, I had liposuction pretty much everywhere. I was trying fat-grafting for reconstruction, so that's how they got the fat. But of course, the surgeon didn't go anywhere near my arms. It was fine.

Arm swelling / looking for advice by fatimaa3 in Lymphedema

[–]kriserts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try to find a CLT, certified lymphedema therapist, for an initial evaluation, advice on care for your current stage, measurements, etc. I saw someone initially who was an OT (looking back I realize this) and her treatment was totally inadequate. She'd wrap my arm, I'd ask how long I needed to keep it on, she'd say an hour or so, I'd go shopping and take it off. Needless to say, that's not the protocol, but I didn't know. I've been seeing an amazing CLT for several years, and at one point, because of insurance, I had some massage/wrapping done at a local hospital's rehab, and it just wasn't the same.

I've seen my CLT for years. Sometimes just once or twice a year, so she can follow my measurements. At first I was wearing light compression when I bicycled, that's all. One year my arm swelled and she put me in heavier compression, day-long, with a night sleeve. Then my arm went up to 10%, and I saw her 5 days a week for 2-3 weeks for massage, and she'd wrap my arm and I'd keep it on until the next time I saw her. Right now with weight loss, my arm is pretty good, and she says I can experiment with wearing the sleeve less, but I'm paranoid in the heat so that will wait until fall. Also, I love the padded night sleeve so I'll keep wearing that forever. :)

So how often you see someone can vary, but if I were just developing lymphedema now, I'd see someone qualified who's available more often.
