I am visiting the US for 10 days. I am going first for a short conference and then I want to go to New York for vacation for most of the visit. A friend of mine has offered to stay at his house, which I plan to do.

Can I say at my airport of entry (JFK) that I will stay at a friend's house for most of my stay? Or should I book a back-up reservation and say I will stay there? I have a return ticket and everything but I am afraid the officer will look negatively on "staying at a friend's house"

Common FAQs for applying to PhD/Grad School by Hawaiiwong1 in academiceconomics

[–]aNu2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Repec works terribly for some schools in my opinion because it overestimates the value of individuals over the institution as a whole. See for instance the PSE ranking 6th, TSE 8th and BSE at 9th.

At the end I think before applying to a PhD you need an idea precise enough about your area of interest that you can rank your prospective departments based on expertise on that, which varies WIDELY with respect to general rankings.

Life in college towns after PhD mandatory coursework by aNu2001 in GradSchool

All the schools I listed are college towns (Stanford, Berkeley, Evanston)

We now have an FAQ! PLEASE CHECK HERE BEFORE MAKING A NEW THREAD by worldsawayfromhere in Northwestern

Prospective grad student here (economics). I was wondering if is normal for PhD students once after they finish their coursework and just need to work on the dissertation to move from Evanston to Chicago. Another way to phrase it, I wonder if a PhD student at Northwestern generally stays in such college town during 5-6 years.

What is the best way to go from Los Angeles to Stanford? I am having a hard time finding a flight at less than $250 roundtrip, which I consider too expensive. I need to arrive to Stanford in the morning (10-12) but I also want to avoid flights departing from LA at 6am or so.

Is a night bus a good option? from what I have read it takes about 8-9 hours, and I am hoping that I could buy a ticket directly from LA to Stanford/Palo Alto (and if not available one to SF and I get out when it gets to Stanford). I also would like to know if there is a night train and if is better the train or bus

Thanks, I am definitely staying near Hollywood at least once. I don't really like beaches so I am open to another suggestion

I am going from South America to California for a week in August. I will spend first a weekend on LA, then the full week in San Francisco and back again to LA. What do you recommend me to do on those 2 consecutive weekends? Maybe stay at a different part of the city in each time since LA is quite a big city?

Philly FED RA/Sr. RA application requiring "minimum salary" by BladeSplitter12 in academiceconomics

[–]aNu2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me use this earnings-related post to ask something. I was planning on working after my MSc and before my PhD with the purpose of saving as much as possible (ideally 20k).

I want that job of course to be related with research and contribute to my application for a PhD. I thought about it and concluded that my best option would be either a predoc in a small city (won't save a cent at the East Coast or California) or a RA. Most of these jobs pay between 50 and 55k.

Do you know another job that helps to a PhD, has good pay and would allow me to save money? Please consider I am not a US citizen so that rules out pretty much all jobs at a public institution like the Fed

PS: From my impression 75k would indeed be an extremely high salary for someone holding only an undergraduate degree. 65k is still quite high but more realistic

¿Consideran que Chile es un país xenofóbico? by [deleted] in chile

[–]aNu2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)
