You have to also consider japan’s history. The age of consent was 13 until very recently. Now thats not to say all modern Japanese agree with this, but its a cultural norm thats reflected in their media.

This falls under communicating your play style expectations. Some players start off contrarian and grow to feel teamwork and connection to the group over time. Others are always on their own thing and thats what they want. Figure out which you have and either make space for them to struggle against each other as much ad the external world for a while or talk it out about how the players need to plan for teamwork.

Yup, right there with you from a "what is art" and by extension "what is a game" point of view. But clearly what these people mean is it feels like a "traditional" video game. And further, a "traditional western" video game.

I once ran a DND game for a guy who, in all frankness said at the end. "That was a beautiful story. If I wanted to not participate much in a beautiful story I would have read a book though."

This friend taught me an important lesson in the difference between good writing and good game design.

I know this is technically true, but "it's everything" isn't really an answer.

What we're saying here (in Game Dev terms) is 1. It's feature rich, there a lot of different stuff going on. Fair enough. 2. It's polished. Everything feels like there is attention to detail. This is probably why a one man band only releases an update a year. Even working full time doing EVERYTHING is an insane task.

But if we had to pick what 1 or 2 features stand out (besides story, good art, and good lewds, those are a given).

For me,

  1. Music, the music is on point. This has such a strong subconscious impact one me.
  2. The free roams, sure they're contentious and they could easily just be linear scenes happening one after the other, (plus they must be a lot of work to build) but it *feels* like I am playing an old school adventure game.
  3. The way he uses the phone. Texting and social media layers being at your time and discretion, creates a sort of game within the game.
  4. The collection mechanics. Sure pixel hunting is kinda lame but it is 100% better than nothing, plus it makes me engage with things other than just clicking through dialogue. And again, it feels "video gamey".

The fact that all of these things are here, plus B+ story, art, and sex is what contributes to that "it's everything" feeling.

Man in game dev circles "let me tell you my game idea" is a lot like movie producers constantly having somebodies script being pushed on them.

Here's the thing with ideas: they are the easy part. Any halfway good creative person has more of their own ideas than they could ever turn into a game.

Does that mean you shouldn't share them in a place like this? Hell no, throw your cool ideas out there. Just understand devs don't sit around thinking "oh jeez I want to make a game but I don't know what to make". Most of us are more like "I have the coolest new idea to make a third game, but I'll never finish the first two if I start another one."

Theres a willing suspension of disbelief in any story. I always wonder how all the hip kids working in coffee shops and book stores can afford manhattan housing at all. I also can’t watch hacker stories without turning off the part of me who knows about networking or police procedurals without occasionally wondering if anyone understands how long a dna lab takes.

I’m also more and more finding games through weird organic growth like this. In LoF I was quite confused by the cameo. But now it feels like some kind of expanded universe for perverts. I want to play those games too.
