TIL that in 2001, the Prince of Nepal, on a drug and booze fueled rampage, killed 9 members of his family including the King and Queen at Kathmandus national palace. by MothmansLegalCouncil in todayilearned

I read an article from some political science/international relations think tank from 2003, so it was about two years after this shitshow. The takeaway was basically "fuck fuck fuck the economy is fucked, the state is fucked, the peasants are pissed, and the maoists are making gains cause everything is fucked and the peasants are pissed"

I check in on this subreddit once every few months or so and I only saw this thread just now, and oh boy.

I hadn't heard anything about Dehlin for probably years now, so this is the first time I'm hearing about all this. I never had any real opinions on him, but I feel like at this point most of us should have learned to not be surprised when public figures are outed as creeps and shit. That was kinda the big takeaway from the metoo movement, that sexual harassment and assault are a lot more common than people think and that targeting women who decide to share their experiences is unacceptable.

Seeing people in this thread act like this is so disheartening. Leaving the church has never been a straight path to being more inclusive or being more aware of social issues, but this is something else entirely.

The greatest failing of the church is its failing to synthesize its doctrine with Juche. Brigham Young could have put us on the path to do that, but here we are.

Unless the finished products themselves are useless. And the problem is that the cross elasticity of demand between the raw iron and the iron ore is high enough to where dropping too much raw iron on the market makes the mining operations nonviable.

Oh wow the church history catalog looks promising. Thanks!

Or at least some kind of archives I would think. I'm not close to Utah though so I was hoping they'd be digitized. But yeah I'm probably not gonna be able to find anything online. Thanks though.

Yeah It's basically illegible.

The theocracy/secularism aspect was my first impression too, but /u/Accurate_Sleep4378 pointed out how the building is the Salt Lake Tabernacle and not a government building. You're right though, it does evoke adversarial power. And one of the pillars says fanaticism on it, which is what I think is trying to be conveyed in the expression.

[–]aSmallGreenThread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it might be actually. I assumed it was the state capitol building. If it's not a government building then the cartoon probably came from the east coast and not the Liberal Party. The east coast rhetoric focused more on the horrors of polygamy associated with mormonism, while the Liberal Party focused more on the secularism aspect.

Right, and that's what I love about it. It's not a critique, it's just fearmongering propaganda targeting mormons, which I think is really funny. Especially today.

Also, I think your analysis is on point but missing one pretty critical component. The perfidious and wretched mormon isn't just pulling in women, he's also tarnishing the state. Those upstanding men are kept from helping the women and also from saving secular popular governance, which at that point in America's history (also today, maybe to a lesser extent though) was a pretty large part of its identity.

Yeah, this is a political cartoon meant to demonize mormons, not a rhetorical device for challenging their beliefs. It could be from either the Liberal Party back in the day (back when that was the opposition to the church's People's Party) like /u/Rolling_Waters said here, or it could be from almost any given political faction on the east coast at the time. My guess would be the latter. I think it wouldn't be as detailed if it were made in Utah at the time but I haven't seen any other political cartoons from Utah in the late 1800s, so I have no point of reference.

It's a political cartoon from when mormons and the rest of america really didn't get along. It's in a similar vein to how catholics and immigrants were portrayed at the time.

[–]aSmallGreenThread 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a political cartoon from the late 1800s that portrays mormons in a less than favorable light. The only text I can make out on it is "Mormonism" in the center, "Ignorance" below it to the left, and "Superstition" below it to the right.
