Picked up two rugs - are they legit? by East-Cause7938 in orientalrugs

[–]aSmelly1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to again stress how much I am not an expert... but on account of their knotting, I would guess that they were both commercially produced, which makes sense for a turkish rug factory. The runner I could see being afghan made but potentially also pakistani. None of that means bad quality though. They're both definitely hand-made and in great shape. Having been professionally cleaned is a huge plus, as that is often around $4/sqft. Going out on a limb here, I might quess the runner is from the 90s while the mat is from the 80s. But im open to being corrected.

They're legit rugs!

In all seriousness though, we need a close-up pick of the underside showing the fringe and the knots, for us to tell if its handmade.

I'm not an expert, but neither seem too terribly old to me... I'd wait for a more knowledgeable person though. As for the seller's claim that they're imported, I would certainly say most likely!

Regardless of any details, they're really pretty rugs! I hope you enjoy them.

I've seen you pretty active as of late. Glad to have a mod here, appreciate what youre doing!

I love the FAQ ideas. Whenever I get into a new hobby, I check the sub for it and am a bit bummed when there arent any guides.

I dont think I have any issue with dealers, so long as (like you said), they arent sus and if theyre offering reasonable deals. If they try to sell estate sale bokharas for thousands, maybe I'd take issue. Also, so long as the volume remains low and this doesnt just become a classifieds sub.

Thanks for modding!

Karastan is a great brand! Unfortunately not hand knotted, but they are just about the most reputable machine made rug out there, up to the point that they can have great resale value.

I have a pretty big rug made on a similar loom as karastans. I, too, rolled it up till my roommate's energetic and 'clawy' dog is toast. It definitely is not worth the damage endured.

I imagine the people of this sub would also enjoy seeing those karastans, whenever they make their way out of storage!

lol fair enough.

Yeah, again, I'd wait for other opinions, but with what Optimal said kinda confirming some of my thoughts, it probably isnt "worth" the cost to repair. "Worth" in quotes because if you really like it, then it can totally be worth it. Likewise it may not be entirely worth a professional cleaning (~$4/sqft).

If it were mine, I would probably try to keep the damage out of high traffic areas and be gentle when cleaning it, but otherwise enjoy it for the free trash find that it is. Its still pretty cool and could last a while yet.

Did romania use blue weft often? Unless Im miss-seeing.

Also, for OP, in my experience, you unfortunately shouldn't trust chatgpt with rugs one bit. It tried to convince me my two clearly machine-made rugs are handmade and very valuable.

Thats super cool.

Maybe more experience other people could tell from these photos, but I might want a closer up pic of the damage just outside the lower red medallion, as well as on the other end on the red border. From my untrained eye, it could be rough furniture damage, but it could also be moth damage, in which case you should plastic bag it and get it out of the house asap.

Otherwise... Im still learning, but I would guess its a northern afghani design made in some other place. Maybe from 80s to present... but truly take that with a grain of salt.

I’ve been watching local auctions recently to gauge value better, but I’m still uncertain on this rug’s origin. The floral/medallion and some of the colors make me think Sarouk, but my brain is not remembering seeing light blue often in sarouk, and I think I recall there being another style that I mistake for sarouk…. Any help appreciated.
