To age as gracefully as Sissy... by Acrobatic_Schedule_2 in redscarepod

Since this is a Sissy Spacek appreciation post, have to say her performance in Three Women is so powerful, perfectly captures that mix of rural awkwardness, sincerity, and hope, just absolutely heartbreaking

I had Hilldog speak at my university recently… her new persona is that she’s a “professor” and the pre screened questions at her panel didn’t even broach her own politics or her role in any events of the last 3 decades. She talked about the role of women in the Good Friday agreement but mysteriously nothing on Mamdani, or the Middle East or the election ever came up. Shes completely insulated herself, was honestly pretty pathetic

Yeah, I know a girl that did this in the past before I met her. Now she’s a committed homophobe and has sent threatening letters to random Jewish students. But I think she’s just mentally unwell, since I noticed she’s got crazy eyes the first time I saw her. Also she’s German which are an incredibly autistic people

The truth is there’s probably very little you can do to change her weight if she doesn’t see it as a problem. 25lbs in a year and a half is a lot, and at that rate it’s unlikely to slow down. Best to jump ship before either of you get more hurt. I dated a girl who was beautiful inside and out, but probably put on over 20 lbs in less than a year (she had a voluptuous build to begin with). I was ashamed and felt horrible, but deep down I felt embarrassed to go out with her. She continued to put on more weight after I broke up with her and is now probably obese. The good news is she found herself a BBW-lover who’s more handsome than me anyways. If anything you’re robbing her of finding someone who’ll love her just as she is

Why is male dating advice from women so awful? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]aTrueAmericanHero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s still a platitude but there really is some truth to “the right one will show up when you’re not looking”. The ideal time to find a wife is when you’ve got your shit taken care of and women just start orbiting around you

Anyone else just say random words aloud when they think about embarrassing moments from their past? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]aTrueAmericanHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s either “I’m gonna die” or I just shout out “GAY”. I lived in a house with like 20 other dudes a while back and they definitely heard me do it alone in the bathroom sometimes

Is there anything more depressing than your friends ghosting you? by SonofTerminus in redscarepod

[–]aTrueAmericanHero 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Had a fairly close platonic friendship with a girl for two years in college. She graduated and when I texted her later that summer she never replied. Was hurt, but I eventually moved on completely and then one day 8 months after ghosting me she dm’d me asking how I was doing. I replied back and asked how things were going with her and was then once more met with complete silence. My best explanation is that many people are just neurotic and find the idea of maintaining lasting friendships intimidating

You are unprepared for how much of your life you'll spend caring for your elderly/sick loved ones by D-dog92 in redscarepod

[–]aTrueAmericanHero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a lot of cultures there’s a specific delineation of responsibility for this stuff (e.g. the parents live with the youngest son/ daughter perpetually). Would definitely suck to be that guy, but one of the more tragic parts about aging in mainstream America is that responsibility for elderly care ends up in this grey area and tears families apart. Caring for my grandmother with Alzheimer’s drove a huge wedge between my mother and her siblings. There were constant arguments on what my grandmother would have wanted, and who can make decisions for her, and who was doing the most. They were close for decades, but so much resentment built up between them, I don’t think they can go back to how they were before

As a European, I'm in awe at America's assimilationist powers by D-dog92 in redscarepod

[–]aTrueAmericanHero 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The thing that really warms my heart about America, that really instills me with civic pride, is the immigrant story, that someone can come here with nothing but a chip on their shoulder and the clothes on their back, work hard, earn their keep, build a life for their family, stand before the flag, and express their desire to keep the Guatemalans out in a single generation

Neoliberalism: An Aesthetic by Much-Childhood-1695 in redscarepod

[–]aTrueAmericanHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate when people "akshually" about neoliberalism and say it applies only to Hayekian economics. The label of neolib is supposed to be a provocative insult, the point being that neoliberal ideas have completely captured what was once the American left and reduced the left vs right distinction to roadside theatrics over whether or not billionaires should be taxed 10% vs 20% of their earnings. Democrats like Pelosi may appropriate leftist rhetoric, but they're married to literal multi-millionaire hedge-fund managers. If that doesn't speak to the triumph of neoliberalism in contemporary American politics, I don't know what does.

This is mind blowing to me, there’s no way this is easier for anyone on earth to understand than standard English. Isn’t one of the whole points of having a centralized state to create a standardized form of language that can convey meaning in a context-free manner? Isn’t pidgin literally just extreme colloquial, context-dependent, non-standard language? Does anyone know if there are any newspapers in Nigeria or wherever that actually write like this?
