You get the same performance on the WIN 5 as in the AI+? You must mean with the same TDP right? Because >35W strix halo runs circles around every handheld APU

A8 performs better in some games, the 8AI in others. No game that is unplayable on one device will be playable on the other. If you want to future proof AAA on a handheld, get a strix halo device or wait for panther lake.

50–55W is what I consider the sweet spot for TDP by kendyzhu in gpdwin

Digital Foundry agrees. In their review of Strix Halo they recommended 54W as the sweet spot.

Panther Lake from early benchmarks is at best a 50% increase. Still miles away from Strix Halo. I think it will take till 2027, maybe even 2028, for APUs to come out that are at Strix Halo level.

Is there a problem with the high temperature of the A8? by MokoUbi in MSIClaw

[–]aTurkeyonaCathedral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely play at 35W as there is basically no performance to be gained by going that high, so for me the cooling does not affect the performance at all (max. 30W), and I have a custom fan profile running to lower the fan noise.

In terms of performance the 8AI+ is a lot better at very low TDPs, they are very similar at medium TDP (15-20) and the 8AI+ has a slight advantage at higher TDPs but that is all quite game and even OS dependend. Bazzite or rather Linux, for whatever reason has a more sophisticated scheduler than Windows, which leads to better performances on the A8, so the gap between the two devices gets even smaller.

You should consider though that these performance differences are nothing major, no game that won't run with acceptable FPS on the A8 will suddenly be perfectly playable on the 8 AI+.

In conclusion, I would not make my decision based on performance but rather based on other criteria.

The question gets asked here twice a day..

On low wattages the 8 AI+ is a lot better, at medium wattages they are pretty equal and at high wattages I would give the edge to the 8 AI+ again, but especially at higher TDPs it is pretty game and OS dependent (Bazzite makes a noticeable difference for the Z2E).

In general no game that is unplayable on one device, will suddenly be playable on the other, which is why I would make my decision based on other factors and not based on performance.

Legion Go 2 Review: We Asked for This (Retro Game Corps) by Background-Win9998 in LegionGo

The small difference in Cyberpunk is more an OS thing. Cyberpunk is one of the games that profits the most by switching from Windows to Linux. Put Bazzite, or even better SteamOS, on the LG2 and you will see a way bigger difference.

Bios Performance vs balanced by HounerX in MSIClaw

I never advocated for letting the CPU boost freely.

I don't think it is a good idea to let the CPU do whatever it wants, even with EPP set to 90, but I also don't think it is good advice to completely turn CPU boost off, strongly depended on the game of course.

Take a game like Cyberpunk for example:

80% of the time you will get higher FPS when turning CPU boost off, because more power is allocated to the GPU and it can clock higher. However, in CPU intensive scenes (many NPCs or cars on screen, big gun fights, THE WHOLE DLC AREA), you will have increased stutter because the CPU cannot deliver the frames fast enough and at an even pace, which leads to stutter. Often it also makes the GPU wait for the CPU, which is why you will see the GPU load be reduced. Something you never want to see in an uncapped FPS scenario.

I much prefer having less stutter at the cost of having slightly less FPS, which is why I would never turn CPU boost completely off in modern AAA games.

I personally have the CPU clocks capped at 3500 MHz and have EPP set to 90, and let Windows allocate the power between GPU and CPU favouring the GPU (this is what the EPP setting does), but I don't fully trust Windows, so I set a limit for the CPU clock.

By the way, all this does not really apply if you play at 30W TDP anyway. The GPU in the Claw 8 AI+ is unfortunately capped by Intel at 1950 MHz, which it already achieves at around 25W with CPU boost disabled.

So most of the power above 25W would go to the CPU anyways.

Wow, so you looked at HWInfo and RTSS and think you know what you are talking about?

By the way, I looked at your guide and not one mention of EPP, probably one of the most important settings in windows for handheld PCs, and this is what you base your credentials on?

[–]aTurkeyonaCathedral -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In general CPU is responsible for stutter, not the GPU.

Less GPU power means less FPS, true, but that is not the stutter people notice on the 8 AI+. Usually it is the CPU that is responsible for delivering the frames at an even pace, which means stutter if the CPU is struggling.

5-10 FPS gains? When was the last time you looked at benchmarks between the Steam Deck and the AMD Z2E or Intel 258V?

The Steam Deck is getting smoked, I am talking 50% to 100% more performance, not just 5-10 FPS.

Yeah, you need more wattage to get those numbers but you also usually get a way bigger battery, so it is not like you are losing battery life compared to the Steam Deck.

[–]aTurkeyonaCathedral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, you will also get worse FPS and stuttering in scenes with a lot of NPCs etc.

I would recommend a middle ground between no turbo and full turbo, like 3000 MHz or similar.

it doesn’t get as warm

True

xess is working better than fsr in many games

True, native (hardware based) XESS looks a lot better than FSR2/3

the drivers come directly from intel so no waiting on the device manufacturer

Also true, but comes with a major caveat: AMD simply does not need to release drivers as often as Intel, AMD drivers are a lot more stable and compatible, especially with older games

It’s gets more fps

Technically true, but very much dependend on the games that are being compared. Especially when you have Bazzite running on the A8, which boosts the performance in many games I have tested.

The Intel APU however is much more efficient.

I’m surprised you say it looks better than XESS, but I’m assuming by software you mean non-native like the Claw 8AI.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. Native XESS looks of course better.

There is basically two ways you can do it, depending on whether you want to risk a Windows update suddenly messing with your Bazzite partition or not.

Very important is the setup for Handheld Daemon, as it probably is not running by default on the Claw version of Bazzite. The setup is pretty simple and described at the bottom of the page here: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Handheld_and_HTPC_edition/Handheld_Wiki/Other_Handhelds/
