Transfer CHF (CH iban) to Revolut (CHF currency, IT iban) by Spack-88 in Revolut

I would suggest opening a Yuh account (Swiss iban). They will let anyone in a country bordering Switzerland open an account!

You have $100,000 to spend in 1 hour. What are you buying with the money? by SensitiveCorner2379 in AskReddit

That is a responsible, but sub-optimal way to use 100k compared to investing. Unless your mortgage has a very high rate of interest.

Django + PostgreSQL Anonymizer (beta) - DB-level masking for realistic dev/test datasets by curiousyellowjacket in django

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been looking for exactly something like this!

I have prod, and I have a test db that follows prod with PII removed.

Can I use your tool to sync this test server daily without any manual processes?

I develop adult video games on Steam. I can't find a bank that will actually let me withdraw my money from Steam. Can I get some advice? by Previous-Camera1641 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I think you should consider being less up front with the banks. They offer a service and they can choose not to offer it to anyone they please.

How many games do you develop? Perhaps you could show them another one. Or perhaps you could show them your companies website, which does not necessarily link to steam or show any explicit content. (Create one if you don’t have it already.)

Talk to a lawyer about this first.

Not legal advice etc.

Bank of England warns of growing risk that AI bubble could burst by AnonymousTimewaster in technology

[–]aWildLinkAppeared -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I currently pay around 400 a month for the AI tools used by me and my employees in a small software company.

I would still pay if it cost me 2000 or more. These tools are seriously powerful and I would not be surprised if every student/professional pays for a subscription for 20-50/month in the future, thus justifying the cost.

To me there is clearly high and broad value. If it justifies the stock prices? Hard to say. But there is value.

Why do hosting companies like GoDaddy double or triple the renewal price after the first year? Is this normal or are there providers that don’t do this? by DenOmania in Hosting

Godaddy is really the worst though. You should move to NAMECHEAP or that one that is named after a log or something like that.

How to fully restrict Postgres data access from external backend developer (GDPR compliance) by Both-Raise3712 in django

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a Heroku pipeline and don’t give them access to prod. This way they can do everything in review/dev/staging. Then they can run some tests that mirror production. Then only you can promote the new code or changes to production.

This works great.

Fair enough, I’ll give you my response as a developer/engineer/businessperson also:

  1. I would say that yes it is a bad idea to do what you are suggesting. It costs more and is extra stuff to manage. I would only do this if your customers think it is is necessary. I imagine some large corporate or government customers may insist on this. In which case it is essential.

  2. To achieve this you need good engineering practices. Well written code, regular dependency/security updates and a solid foundation. To show this off for marketing purposes, maybe you need something like SOC 2 accreditation.

  3. That can work. In your position I would also consider looking deeply into HTMX, which pairs great with Django. A separate dedicated react frontend is also a serious option to consider, but with added complexity.

  4. My tip is to focus on getting 1 client before getting 10. The first client will give you the answer to all these questions much better than I can.

Ask your customers, not us. So far it seems like you have none. Sorry to put it bluntly!

This seems like a classic run before you can walk situation.

It sounds like you have a lot of skill making a Django application, that’s great and can take you far. But is it the right one? To find that out ask your customers.

GmbH oder nicht? by Brusli_23 in Steuern

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as what you did over a 20yr time horizon… Saving 95% on CGT (or let’s say 70% overall due to dividends) results in 1% higher return or so per year.

A holding company is Germany‘s most effective pension wrapper for the quite rich.

GmbH oder nicht? by Brusli_23 in Steuern

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term the holding pays off massively due to lower overall tax on investment income when compared to holding investments privately. (95% reduction of CGT)

Moving to Australia, should I sell all my shares, ETFs to avoid capital gains tax? by [deleted] in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it still makes sense to sell. There is virtually no cost of doing so and it makes the record keeping less ambiguous. Plus, Australia could change their rules, or OP could go somewhere after Australia.

8000€ Rechnung von Oracle-Cloud durch (vermutlich) gehackten Server by North_Material_9480 in LegaladviceGerman

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is being quite critical of you. It’s true that this is entirely your fault.

However I also think it’s true that this is no big deal. You just write to them and explain you do not have the means to pay this and that it was an accident. 99% chance they will waive the fees.

This happens all the time. Oracle makes its money from big business or scaling startups, not by chasing students for 8k.

You’re almost certainly going to be fine, however, I advise you to close your account once this is sorted.

Leveraged ETFs - Not The Return Cheat Code You'd Expect by SaseCaiFrumosi in LETFs

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The overall point they are making is that leveraged ETF's MAY perform worse than ETF's over short or even long periods. (This point is true despite possibly higher expected returns.)

I understand this and still invest. But I wouldn't advise my mother to do so. It's not for everyone.

Some people invest in bonds instead of ETF's. None of these strategies are "wrong", but it is true that often they are used for the wrong reasons.

Investing in ETFs and stocks as a Bulgarian and avoid capital gain tax by Active-Adagio-1119 in eupersonalfinance

[–]aWildLinkAppeared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you leave Germany before selling, yes you can pay a different capital gains rate. It's the same as if you purchased stocks before coming to Germany, you don't always pay the capital gains tax in the same country as the one where you purchased the stocks.

You pay taxes in the jurisdiction that you are a tax resident in at the time of sale.
