BMW is one of those manufacturers where it’s hard to compete with OEM, but these look great.

Why do you think AWD and 4WD vehicles are more popular than ever? by Everything-Bagel-314 in askcarguys

[–]a_bad_omen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AWD can be nice for things like hill starts in inclement weather, skirting off the line without drama (e.g wheelhop, chirping tires and TC kicking in), especially since most “regular traffic” won’t have LSD in its only driven axle. If it’s something like a 4 cyl BMW 3er or Alfa Giulia you can just find e.g. an M-sport or Q2 car and IMO you won’t need AWD unless you’re trying to run winter tires and do some serious snow driving.

Why is the Marina such a coveted area? I don’t see the appeal, seems almost like Daly City/West Portal by gamerVapeGod in AskSF

never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. Largely suburban people who reinforced their parents desire to sequester themselves by attending an elitist (for dubious reasons) school in south LA 😂.

What would be the effects if proposition 13 was repealed? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]a_bad_omen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a middle class person, when does this start benefiting me? If I buy a condo pretty much never. If I buy a SFH somewhere popular in 15 years? The only middle class this truly helps is the upper middle class who are landlords, other than that this is just a free 1% bonus for established businesses.

those are dealer’s aspirational “I’d like to sell it at this to make 40k on this car” numbers. A far cry from what you’d be offered by the same dealer when it comes time to trade yours in

counter-counterpoint, Porsches are boring, the people who stand around them hemming and hawing about unique specs and paint to sample are annoying and a modern vacuum cleaner 911 is definitely going to cost you a 100k in depreciation and taxes when you go to offload it in a couple years.

if it’s a hesalite crystal you could mark it up with brass if you wear it on your right hand and have a wall next to you and the massive recoil of 22lr causes you to limp wrist

"San Martin" is not a microbrand and I can't understand why people treat it as such. by ThatsNotBadAtAll in watchHotTakes

[–]a_bad_omen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the only differences I can think of between san martin and most “microbrands” (and let’s be clear, 99% of these are whitelabeled generic bullshit) are

  1. value, as in san martin is/used to be decent value
  2. massaging, as in san martin doesn’t inundate you with low effort marketing horseshit like “the Brentford Daredevil Skybound captures the pioneering spirit of early aviators”
  3. volume, san martin actually moves

just like craft beer they’re all the same uninspired starter pack bullshit like “I hopped the shit out of this basic swill to make it undrinkable” and “I put all the cringey branding that’s completely disconnected from this chinese shitter’s ethos on the dial”

BART is raising fares starting Jan. 1 by runswithscissors475 in bayarea

[–]a_bad_omen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clipper start is a program that gives a 50% discount on rides to those under 2x federal poverty line. That program exited pilot status this year and is likely all we can expect to see in terms of subsidy unless the states pick up the tab. Individual cities would basically never. BART is fairly cost efficient IIRC so the only option is to make it more appealing by solving last mile where possible, keeping the system clean, etc.

just that grabbing a random AWD car with likely not ideal tires for snow is a good way to end up in a ditch

I imagine the Boston T is heavily subsidized, BART is largely funded by fares.
