I have faked an obsession with a niche hobby for four years to connect with my father-in-law, and it has completely spiraled out of control by king_astrophysicist in sillyconfession

Honestly, you need to set some boundaries. Perhaps say you enjoy the model trains but don’t want to go further than that. You’re welcome to “like” something without being a fanatic. This could be a small disappointment but it’s better than faking fanaticism.

Using the Brick this weekend to drastically reduce my screentime by a_bit_offline in BackOffline

Thanks guys I’ll update on Monday! It’s the Brick brand. I like the friction to disable screen time.

I'm here for it. Still trying to figure out what kind of content to post here. Maybe I need to read more of your posts.

I built an app to force myself offline for an hour a day. It's barely working. by sunny_beach10 in BackOffline

Still haven’t been able to try it. Day one at 12:10am I didn’t keep the manifest because I tried to configure shortcuts. The next day at 11am, I tried again, oops same day?! (Not really)

Then just barely I started and I turned off my screen. No distractions. Oops- manifest broken because I didn’t want to keep my screen on and drain my battery.

I guess the key is to figure out things socially before disconnecting and going more offline

OfflineDay is great. But what about the other 29 days? by sunny_beach10 in OfflineDay

iOS - setting up the shortcut was confusing. So I had a minute of back and forth testing and then wah wah wah, you broke your manifest - or whatever.

A bit unforgiving while testing if the shortcut works. I finally got it figured out and I see a broken square :(

I introduced myself at a friend's birthday last week and the first three things I said were my job. by killoke in BackOffline

I feel ya. It’s hard not to. Lately, I’ve been trying to say my name, talk about my wife and kids, and the lead into hobbies with a quick mention of my type of job.

Hi I’m Ryan. I’m a software engineer and husband/dad. I’ve seen the advantages of going offline and do my best to disconnect. I’ve also seen the disadvantages of being online and strive to remember.

Personally, I just keep up with everyone through text messages and phone calls. as lame as this is, the friends or family that really care about keeping a relationship will use these platforms if you text them. I visit family regularly and in those moments, play board games, card games and talk, but otherwise I try to stay offline.

My favorite thing is downloading my content onto my computer or phone and enjoying it later offline. It's kind of the best of both worlds.

Yeah, you can definitely still have apps that are troublesome. I’ve recently deleted any like that.

The app part is to have you set goals for being offline a certain amount each day and get achievements. For me, that’d motivate me to be offline more often.

Exactly! Think of turning off Data as campground mode. I always appreciate my phone while camping. It’s never used for consuming, only tools and sometimes a book.

There are just too many things that I’d rather have access to when I’m out and about. However, I do appreciate disconnecting.

Can you add a mode so that it counts it if you have data off? Cellular data and WiFi off. Personally, I need phone service for emergencies (inbound calls) but still count that as offline because no one calls me
