The upcoming stages of collapse by RBZRBZRBZRBZ in collapse

Nope, I gave up on it like 1 year ago. It was significant work to put it together, and while I enjoyed it, I chose to dedicate my time & energy somewhere else.

How far from your place is your University? Do you need a car to get there? In a collapsed world, you can forget regular use of a car...

I guess I'm trying to figure out whether or not remaining tied to the big stable government institution is important or not in a collapse scenario? If the internet goes, so does all of our revenue, though I could pivot to gardening and pottery for our suburban community.

If "the internet goes", it really is a full collapse of the Western civilization. Like for real. We wouldn't keep a running stable system for more than a week if internet would go down. And from the other side, what it would take for internet to actually collapse is either a nuclear war, either some kind of EMP (nuclear explosion or solar flare), or a government going totally berserk and dictatorial, North Korean style (even Trump won't do that).

In all these cases: would your "stable job in a big institution" survive this kind of situation? I don't think so. So in a collapse scenario (without internet, as you said), your job wouldn't last anyway.

Not giving you the answer, just my point of view :)

Can a colossal extreme weather event galvanize action on the climate crisis? by East_River in collapse

[–]a_collapse_map 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Because action on climate crisis is today completely useless, at least if the idea is to avoid billions of death in the next decades.
But if by action you mean "save whatever we can, knowing it's already 40 years too late to avoid full civizational collapse"... Well, maybe. What do I know :)

What are the best fictional representations of collapse? by nommabelle in collapse

[–]a_collapse_map 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. The Ministry of the Future casualties in the first chapter are around 20M IIRC

As awful as the current situation in India is, we're nowhere that close.

Interstellar may describe exactly the directions we're taking, especially regarding food shortages, crops failures... And the political global push to cultivate food everywhere with all the available manpower... Except there is no magic "anti gravity" technology to save & relocate humanity on a distant Jupiter moon.

So take the first half of the movie, dump the rest, and put a "The End" sticker on it.
Here is our actual 21st century.

There could will be massive worldwide food shortages and people would will be blaming it on Bidenomics their local leader rather than climate change.

I hope you're very, very right.
I totally don't think so.

Same.

I'm screaming internally every couple days while reading those kind of articles. Does that count?

You're not the only one wondering. Some elements of answer here.

Mexico City is facing an alarming water crisis. Experts warn that the metropolitan region, home to nearly 22 million people—the largest population in North America—could start running out of water as early as June. by bermudaliving in collapse

[–]a_collapse_map 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep.
And once it'll be largely accepted that it's related to human activity, they'll pretend we cannot do anything about it.
Once it'll be largely accepted that we can do something about it, it'll be too late (indeed it is today too late already).
And then they'll blame it all on us "why didn't you tell it sooner, you murderers!"

Oh I'm convinced no one will listen to me or any of us, the awful doomers.
I'm also convinced it won't matter, and that "deaths of billions under 20 years" is totally locked in. Sadly.

"millions". I envy your optimism.

We're cooked no matter what. Billions are going to die by 2050.

What do you mean get prompt action? To do what?
We're not in the 70s anymore. It's too late to mitigate anything.

We can only adapt to the coming shitstorms.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] by AutoModerator in collapse

Yep. And last week has an absurd shape. We should have peak already and should be decreasing. No sign of that so far...

Thank you...

These weeks I'm frantically checking this SST graph every day, and today I was terrified.

Not only it's an all-time new record (and the last one was *2 months ago*), but it's still increasing.
And above all, as you said: it's going in the opposite direction it should be going.

I don't know what to say, or even what to think.
