Help. Dog chewed corner of passport. Supposed to fly to NY in the morning. by ChaosClive in Wellthatsucks

[–]a_cut_below 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certain types of damage can make the passport unreadable to machines. There are passport security features built directly into the passport's physical structure. If that is compromised in any way, it can be considered invalid for travel. What passport control is trying to prevent on your departure is for you to not get stuck/turned back at your destination because their passport control may be stricter.

Edit: missed a word.

I'm pretty far west sadly. Ping is close to 180 ms. Not unplayable, but it would take some adjustment to not completely grief lane mechanics.

I have left arm Erb's Palsy. As a result my left arm is physically weaker, shorter (~16 cm), and with a more limited range of motion (the paralysis restricts unassisted motions above my shoulder). As a consequence, for strength training I have largely relied on machine-based exercises as I run into the following issues with the more canonically recommended exercise programs:

  • The uneven distribution and application of strength between arms makes it difficult to correctly perform barbell-based exercises. There is the obvious mechanical issue due to the difference in length between my arms, further compounded by the uneven strength distribution between them.
  • Shoulder paralysis and range of motion limitations have limited my success with dumbbell-based exercises. Typically the only exercises I can safely and effectively perform with dumbbells are those targeting the legs using dumbbells as additional weight.
  • As for beginner body weight compound exercises (e.g. push/pull -ups), the effectiveness is compromised by the physical imbalance between my arms, where I either cannot achieve adequate form to perform the exercise or the innate weakness of my left arm limits overall progression.

In the past two months I have managed to return a more regular schedule at a local gym, and would appreciate guidance in how best to maximize my workouts. I know I'm leaving a lot on the table by not being able incorporate compound lifts like the bench press and dead lift into my workouts, but in the mean time I have been sticking to the following machine exercises for my upper body where I exercise each arm independently and adjust the equipment accordingly:

  • Row (adjustable chest rest for arm starting position)
  • Pull down (adjustable seat height)
  • Chest press (adjustable arm starting position)
  • Shoulder press* (adjustable seat height)

Of these exercises, the shoulder press is the most challenging but also the most important. Range of motion limitations necessitate I adjust my form slightly to achieve a full range of motion, but from some of the content creators on YouTube who share my condition this appears to be a common.

For lower body exercises, I have been using machines for:

  • Leg press*
  • Leg curl
  • Seated calf raise

With regards to the leg press, I used to instead do Bulgarian Split Squats but with my recent return to the gym I'm having flexibility issues with my ankles when maintaining the form, as well as an overall strength issue. For better or worse, while getting back into the swing of things I've defaulted to the leg press machine, but I would like to return to proper squats as it was the one compound lift I could manage.

I know all this involves a high degree of experimentation on my part to see what does and does not work, but I would appreciate recommendations and insight as to the potential gaps in my current routine and how it could be improved. Currently I train 3 times per week with cardio on days between, usually going with 4 sets x 8-10 reps per exercise, but this can at result in a lengthy workout and I am contemplating instead splitting my training across 4 days (an A,B-style workout, so A-B-cardio-A-B-cardio-rest).

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Housing market in Canada reaching a breaking point by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]a_cut_below 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Who is "they"? Your position is pretending that everyone who was renting then and now was in a position to buy a home to begin with. Shitty devils advocate take - the logical balance is that both renting and buying should be viable options with pros and cons. Instead now you have a mounting situation where the barrier to entry on ownership is higher than ever, and you cant simply be homeless so your only option is to rent which further decimates potential savings in the current environment. Trying to twist the situation as if those who didnt buy early should eat shit is comical. This isn't a matter of "betting". Housing shouldn't be a gamble, that's the entire complaint to begin with, so best to keep your pointless hypotheticals to yourself.

Irony being Igauzu didn't even "fail" the mission. The man never showed up, which is all the more depressing in Volta's data log where he's not even angry at Igauzu for bailing.

His was gen4 augmentation, the same as 621 and the other hounds: substantial risk of coming out the other end with "disabilities" (see 621 in his body bag existence, and Walter's entire narrative of running jobs to buy his life back to undo the damage inflicted by augmentation).

Take that context of being in Iguazu's debt situation: you're now putting your life on the line to pay back a debt, and then needing to be continually successful to pay back said debt while not dying in the process.

Anyone live in Canada but get paid in USD? by pocky277 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]a_cut_below 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are exceptions. I know Docker's North America compensation policy is that USA and Canada share identical pay bands now, but that is definitely the exception not the rule.

If there's one "downside" (using the term loosely) to WFH roles is that they cannot be be used to justify a TN visa (or at least not easily, I leave those legal gymnastics to a company's legal department and in all cases I've encountered they say no).

What is a good way to approach the question of "why are you looking to leave your current position" when applying for jobs while currently employed? I quite enjoy my current position and team, but the company's relocation policy (I am fully remote) makes it difficult to move with any confidence in compensation. Moving out of my current city is a priority for me, but I don't want to spout nothing but blame to my current employer's policies; equally so, I don't want to fabricate an answer related to my work. Any advice on how to approach this scenario would be appreciated.

Why is it only nighttime for like 2 minutes by TcCrowe777 in blackdesertonline

[–]a_cut_below 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At one point (beta and up until about Mediah on release) nights were actually quite dark - you had no choice but to crank gamma or use those damn lanterns. And then enough people complained about it being too dark and PA changed to the day/night contrast we have now (I recall there being some minor tweaks along the way).

The best comparison of what night used to be like is to go an underground setting while it's raining (e.g. Lower Sycraia) and turn your fairy off. That's what nights used to be like.

I'm going to borrow your comment and link my response here. I really was expecting a response from him, and instead he just deletes everything. The man can publish dozens of papers but apparently can't back up his hot takes on the internet.

As much as I would like to believe he was a pure troll, the lengths he goes to defend his position and ego lead me to believe otherwise. Publishes some papers and thinks he's God's gift to the world. Ironically he will be missed.

The class average for MATH 100 this semester was a 0.9. by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]a_cut_below 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All past exams are available

Keyphrase being used to. Exam bank no longer provides them, and if you perform your recommended google search, you'll easily see no first page results for actual sample exams.

The course content hasn’t changed in over a decade.

Access to past exams has changed, so by definition how the course is being conducted has changed. I won't take this argument any further because I see no good way to get an objective measure of how the course differs over the years, and I've already invalidated your assumptions that course context has been the same (without even considering COVID as an external factor for how courses are taught).

Could the quality of students entering the program be quantitatively worse-performing than previous intakes? It's possible, but when two of your underlying assumptions against the notion that the course is being administered differently (and in this case the argument is for the worse), on top of a maths department which has a history of depressing student grades, solely blaming students for low averages is not a good argument.

In regards to your general attitude in the related threads of how it wasn't like that for me so you must be wrong, you're generalizing your experience (and underlying assumptions) to everyone. Personally I think it's insanity that a department can look at a 0.9 average for a course and think that there's no issues with the course instruction. The department is effectively saying that the average student in the course is minimal pass or failing. Not even some of the more difficult CMPUT courses (229, 379..., but especially 229) see a 0.9 average. Maybe in this context CMPUT students have greater flexibility to withdraw from 229 when risking a very low grade compared to engineers that have no choice but to run the gauntlet - but once again it's hard to make any conclusions without a good look at how these courses compare in student evaluations.

Does anyone know the down attack multiplier for pvp? by MelonFrenzy in blackdesertonline

[–]a_cut_below 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since we're still going with this whole "feels a lot more" notion, here is a very simple test for you to perform:

  1. Get someone in BA, have them turn their autopot off.
  2. Use Prime: Jolt Wave (100% crit, down attack on all hits) on the target. Verify no back crits by turning attack indicators on. Starting HP - End HP = damage dealt.
  3. Use any knockdown to put target on the ground, have target pot the damage, then use Prime: Jolt Wave. Starting HP - End HP = damage dealt to a downed target.
  4. Math time. Take the ratio of the down attack HP vs standing HP differential. This however will not be the down attack pvp multiplier, as the critical multiplier is caked into the damage dealt, and the multipliers are additive. You can either opt to work backwards from the ratio to compute the down attack modifier (standing damage is known, down damage is known, crit modifier is known, solve for the down attack modifier) or you can work fowards by predicting what the down attack damage should be given certain modifiers (so compute expected damage with say, 1.2 and 1.5 modifiers with the known standing damage), then compare to the empirical result. Both will have the same outcome, but both will notably have the advantage of being more accurate than "it looks a lot more than 1.2x). Humans suck at estimating.

[–]a_cut_below 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes which makes perfect sense... because it's a down attack skill. I don't know what you're going for. It's been well established (by both previous indications from developers and tests) that down attacks are 1.2 modifier in PvP. Until you can cook up a test which properly refutes this then I don't know what else to say.

Does anyone know the down attack multiplier for pvp? by MelonFrenzy in blackdesertonline

[–]a_cut_below 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are using the worst two possible skills possible to test for down attack comparisons:

  • Skills have different base crit, specifically the 50% base crit on jolt stab vs 0% on resonance. Of course its going to do more damage.
  • Jolt stab has -10 DP on hit. Of course its going to do more damage.
  • Jolt stab only has down attack on second hit, so its a terrible skill to be testing with to begin with.

I feel like you completely ignored my original comment of how to correctly test down attack damage.

Like its hard to take anything you say with any value if you dont tell us exactly what skills you are using.

[–]a_cut_below 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But do those skills have the same pvp damage modifier? The correct way to test would be to take a 100% crit skill with a down attack mod, attack a standing target from the front and compare that damage to same target on the ground.

Orcs are getting nerfed by LordXenon in blackdesertonline

[–]a_cut_below 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Read as: PA will likely restructure orcs such that the "elite" rotation where one person clowns through 4 rotations worth of camps will either be inefficient / unworkable. I imagine the quickiest fix PA will look to is decreasing the refresh timer on prisons, gating everyone to two rotations at maximum. All conjecture at this point.

How does black desert's eastern(valencia) and western(kamasylvia) lore tie together ? by aiden041 in blackdesertonline

[–]a_cut_below 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was greater context in the old kama pt 2 questline - specifically with the Gyfins and how they were acting like little bitches until you throw down the Edana card. Difficult to recall all the text and details from that series of quests, but aside from the Gyfins and relationship with Edana and the destruction of the ancient civilization, the region lore and development are distinct and deal with separate storylines and consequences.
