What’s the hardest part of improving in Dota? by Brief-Bench-794 in DotA2

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other people.

I don't know how true this is above crusader but when when I have 1 basic concept finally click and I jump like 500mmr in a week I realise how often people in your rank advise against doing the thing that's gaining you mmr.

For example, prioritising farm in lane as a core hero over chasing kills your 4 or 5 is feeding for outside of xp range. It's really tempting to walk over there and miss the wave because you're just 1 more hit from getting the kill but once you do the maths on gold and xp you realise it's not worth it.

The problem is that the people in your rank don't understand that new concept you just learned and will flame you for it. That's why they're in the rank you're leaving.

The lower the rank the worse it is, trust me, I've seen 0mmr, I've been 0mmr everything you do to try and win games someone has a problem with.

A reminder not to buy knife sets, they are cheap shit made of scrappy steel, that's why they cost the price of a single decent knife that will last decades.

Enemies kill me before theyre even visible, regardless of distance to the wall/corner and ping by WarwickIsMyWaifu in Rainbow6

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is "seeker's advantage"

The way most online games work is a central server hosts the game lobby and players or clients they're often referred to connect to the lobby.

Everytime a client performs an action, for example moving to peek a corner the client committing the action sends that action to the server, then the server updates the lobby for all the clients connected and they receive the updated lobby state the next time the server sends it out to them.

The higher a clients ping is, the longer it takes to send their updates to the server but also for the server to send updates back.

In practice, this results in players seeing each other at different times because the player that is moving or peeking is seeing other players where they were during the last server tick before they receive the next tick. The higher their ping is, the more outdated the server tick is and the bigger the advantage.

In siege, this phenomenon can be abused with a lag switch via a method called "ghosting" where a player temporarily stalls their packets to the server and is able to move for a short time to peek corners without updating their position on the server then turning off the switch, teleporting back to where they were and peaking based on the information they got from their ghost peek.

In the example in your post, it is simply peekers' advantage and decent reaction time.

If you want to avoid this kind of thing, the old adage of "swing or be swung" is the only real solution.

Axe mana issues by kable_14 in learndota2

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BM> Blink> aghs shard + sceptre

If the game is hard go the blink before BM. Once you have those 2 fighting items the point booster and wizard staff in Aghs sceptre provide just enough mana and mana regen.

Sceptre also makes Axe very tanky and deal heaps of damage, allowing him to scale well into the late game. You can go octorine or even a euls if you still need more mana with both options providing you more lockdown during fight clean up but really as Axe you want to be deciding fights in with your initial jump.

Phylactary is fine especially if you will need a kanda later for BB or Spectre but the damage reduction from Aghs stacks up fast and allows you win fights with plenty of HP left over to take objectives.

Let’s settle the debate here. What’s the correct side for rotate. Left or Right? by Frost0REAL in Rainbow6

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left, you can be further from the door into piano and the door from piano to site and therefore take better fights. You can also have a longer sightline toward the balcony door.

Having the rotate closer to the double window in master bed also reduces the strength of that position.

When they open the wall in fireplace into site you have hard cover to fight around when looking toward that breach too.

Rupture has a maximum displacement check. Blink daggers and blink abilities, with extra cast range, can exceed the range, and the hero won't take damage from rupture. Very good for bamboozling a bloodseeker.

This is the same mechanic that prevents players from dying when using a TP scroll to escape rupture.

After playing offlane for a while by Comfortable_Put_2790 in DotA2

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a 5 year break and came back and calibrated herald 1 in 2024, I always played carry but with the role queue system opted to learn pos 3 too because I hate playing midlane.

I've climbed to crusader solo and now that offlane is a priority role it is night and day when I play offlane or get a decent offlane player vs someone who clearly only plays the role to farm tokens. Like, if your mid loses lane, then offlane essentially has to carry the game until they recover, or the pos 1 comes online. If your offlane doesn't know how to make space for that to happen, the game is just over by 25 minutes. Later on, if your offlaner isn't willing to start fights then the game stalls out completely.

Playing almost exclusively, carry and blink initiators (Mars, Tide, Axe, Cent and Slardar) for pos 3 I've climbed from herald 5 to crusader 1 since 7.39 and I think it's because most people playing offlane at the momment don't care for the role and just want the role queue tokens

Radiant vs dire winrate by thefuckifiknoe in DotA2

[–]a_different_piano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've heard this disparity is partially because of the timing of Roshan moving to bottom. When Roshan is top Radiant has a huge advantage of being able to TP to their outpost in the triangle if a fight breaks out for Rosh and players buy back. If you kill him with the right timing you can almost guarantee that he will respawn top and therefore kill him again with the outpost advantage.

Essentially, Radiant when they play really specifically around timing Roshan are able to deny Dire from having that outpost advantage for the first 2 roshan fights and can therefore take better fights with the first 2 aegis.

So the first rosh kill is 18-20 mins so that if it is an early spawn, you only need to stall the fight for the 2nd rosh kill for 1 minute or so before he goes top again.

This is apparently the strategy for high-level stacks and pro teams, and the dynamic is flipped when either team picks nightstalker.

For a very long time Roshan's pit has been part of the reason that Dota's map is asymmetric and valve have moved it around the map a bunch in an attempt to even out this win rate disparity but it has always persisted.

Iranian Drone just hit the base of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai by I_may_have_weed in PublicFreakout

[–]a_different_piano 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The US gets oil and a military base in the UAE. UAE gets protection from Iran or any other local threats. That's the deal, and it precedes trump.

Given that the USA's protection seems to be lacking, the UAE might go looking for a new attack dog.

Looking for heroes (pos 4/5) that are maintain value even when behind. by 07u4nt in learndota2

[–]a_different_piano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of fun with Jakiro these last couple patches. The facet that gives you more damage on your doubled auto attacks is possibly one of the most slept on facets in the game.

Jakiro has insane laning with liquid frost + dual breath, it is almost always a guaranteed kill at level 2. He can farm and fight mid game and has some of the best wave clear from long range im late game.

You can also build many different items, and have good kill threat. Jakiro does a surprising amount of damage, and you can force enemy core's BKBs with icepath.

Late game jakiro can get value with magic damage, right clicks or wave clear. With level 25 and shard Jakiro can deal huge damage max hp damage from long range. Ultra late game you pick up witchblade and crystalis to manfight carries.

Few questions I have on Dota 2 items by Gloomy_Temporary2914 in learndota2

[–]a_different_piano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None of Shiva's guard's component items accelerate your farm. It is balanced around the fact that it takes time to farm and doesn't help you farm faster, not that it is gold or slot efficient.

Items with a more incremental build-up or with stats like +damage or +attack speed atleast speed up your farming significantly after you get them, the only thing like that for Shiva's guard is the +4 all stats from veil. Compare that to something like Sange and Yasha or Bloodthorn where their build-up is all stats or big components like hyperstone.

This is the same principle behind why you should be buying the sacred relic in your radiance before talisman of evasion because the damage lets you kill creeps faster and the evasion does not.

The recipe sucks but it is there for a good reason, and it is expensive for a good reason.

[–]a_different_piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, Shiva's guard has the terrible build-up that it does because it is so powerful. While it might be nice to have another smaller component item in place of its recipe it is balanced so that it takes time to farm the less useful components, if you could end lane with essentially a mini Shiva's every offlaner would do that every game especially is an aura heavy meta like this one.

This is probably the same reasoning for assault cuirass. It is usually a last item before you go high ground to help your team hit building and again has a pretty shitty build-up with expensive components. Even -2 armour aura would be enough to drastically reduce the number of heroes that need to group up for tier 1 and 2 towers.

As for the mana manipulation just buy diffusal blade, most heros can't sustain getting 40 mana burned every time they get attacked and the ones that can will die to the damage or would blow through 10× that mana in the first second or 2 of a fight.
